@Arsh Dhawan That's absolutely nonsense. Anyone who has read Tolkien, JRK and Martin's works know the difference. It may seem similar on the surface level but it's entirely different. Also, Tolkien did not introduce the world to wizards, elves, orges or other fantastical creatures. These tropes can be dated back to thousands of years. Tolkien's contribution to fantasy is undeniable but saying that others just rearranged his story is trash talk.

As for the tropes, there is something called a "Hero's Journey" that involves all the tropes you mention. Like a young protagonist, elderly mentor, trials and tribulations, a dark lord or an obstacle in the end. The first known written version of this is the Epic of Gilgamesh from ancient Sumeria. Really interesting stuff, check it out.

You're right about the obvious similarities between LOTR and Harry Potter to inspiration yahin kahin se aya hai ye baat to hai. Lekin fir LOTR was the benchmark for this kind of fantasy genre jiska ki simplified version catered towards a comparatively young audience Harry Potter ko keh sakte hain.. Harry Potter though in itself ek kaafi acchi series hai but is nowhere close to the masterpiece LOTR is in terms of how intricately the story is woven and the sheer layers being presented by JRR Tolkien. Baaki aapne kaafi sahi nutshell banaya hai so very thankful for the effort. Keep up the good work and eagerly waiting for the next part..

J K Rowling once said that J R R Tolkien was a huge influence on her, but hugely her personal everyday life and the people she met were the original influence on the characters; where as for Tolkien it was his days in the world war that influenced him to write first the hobbit book and then the LOTR series.

Yeah,there are a suspicious level of similarities between some tropes in both stories. But that's all that is similar,the tropes. There are a lot of other aspects in storytelling,like how the characters are developed, how the world is built, how the audience might connect to the story emotionally,and a lot more. But your critique is appreciable too. Such similarities can be observed in star wars as well

alright, so in response to your question, the themes in lotr and harry potter are recurring themes in high fantasy fiction. ursula k le guin's a wizard of earthsea and alison croggon's the naming have such similar themes, but are very different from lotr and hp because of storytelling. think of themes and archetypes in storytelling as resume templates. you can use a template available in google docs but it will only do so much to increase your chances of being hired. what you put in it is what will get you the job. themes and archetypes exist because humanity has been telling stories since centuries. but our stories are different because of how we tell them, and the reason why lotr and hp actually feel different because the story being told is different, in spite of common themes.

Lord of the Rings can be called the Godfather of fantasy genre. Tolkein did fantastic job, getting inspiration from ww2 and norse mythology and created something legendary. And Peter Jackson gave us the visuals....something i don't think can easily be topped. Even after 20 years...each movie still feels like new every time I watch it. Now what Rowling did, only she knows,you can call it copy,you can call it taking inspiration from the OG. But no one can deny the huge similarities between these two. Dark Lord Sauron=Voldemort Frodo=Harry Gandalf=Dumbledore The one ring=Horcrux Nazguls=Dementors Gollum=House Elf Shelob=That big spider i forgot name of Both Sauron and Voldemort trying to come out from shadow....like you just can't unsee the similarities. But OG is always OG...this is why Rowling's so called Dark Lord couldn’t even get rid of a school boy🤣 You can say HP is the kids version of the legendary Lord of the Rings.

Like both of the stories have the same base plotline which hooked the readers of the time and the stories/ writing style was completely different. So I think it's just a see a of authors trying to hook people with a good plot they already like and doing their own stories based about it

Actually the inspired books based on Lord of the Ring are Song of Ice and Fire in short Game of Thrones ,Harry Potter and a little bit of Chronicles of Narnia , that's what I think. And originally Lord of the Rings is very much itself inspired from Norse mythology ,yeah the same Norse mythology of Thor ,Odin and Loki which has Gaints ,Elevs,Dwarfs and dark Elevs concept.
@ajcliff8642
@ajcliff8642 Год назад
It's widely different. You have to understand that fantasy as a genre has taken a lot of inspiration from folk tales, myths and age old stories. The greek literature is one of the best examples for that. Elves, dragons, wizards, healers, dwarfs, orges these are not unique or pioneered by Tolkien but from different cultures. LoTRs itself has lifted a lot of it's ideas from norse and Scandinavian mythologies. On that note you may say that star wars, LOTR, Harry Potter, ASOIAF, Percy Jackson have the same chosen one theme and share a lot of fantastical creatures but that will be horribly simplifying the plot. Frodo is not the chosen one, it could have been anyone who got the ring but his innocence is what makes him getting corrupted harder. Tolkien was a devout Christian and you can see a lot of symbolism there. Meanwhile Harry was chosen by Voldemort himself. The prophesy could lead to either Harry or Neville but it was Voldemort's own insecurities and fears of being a half blood which bought in his ultimate downfall. JRK took inspiration from world wars as we see blood purity and fascism take a spotlight in HP.

@@sarfaraz185 star wars as a whole franchise? Sure. But I am talking about lotr first 3 movies which is miles better than the og star wars trilogy. The scale, the lore, the vfx, the cinematography is so better. It made the most money as a trilogy and won the most oscar as trilogy. The 3rd movie won 11 oscars including Best picture. The comparison here is extremely ridiculous.

Here's my answer to your question. You are correct in that there are similar characters in both LOR and HP but the thing is that tolkein was so influential that these types of characters became tropes.almost every fantasy story uses these tropes. Like LOR is to the fantasy genre eva and akira are like the quintessential anime if other anime use the same type of characters we can not call it plagiarism. Almost every anime has a tsundere now a days but we can't say they all plagiarised from lum from urusei yatsura. So yeah the final verdict is that they are tropes. LOR is so quintessential to the fantasy genre that every story uses them. ( Also watch Akira, neon genesis evangelion, and urusei yatsura) please tell what do you think.

Both stories drew inspiration from different cultures and legends around the world especially Latin, Greek and roman because they are more widely known and majority of the world's population relate through them. So I don't think harry potter is the copy of lotr but instead drew inspiration from similar(not same) sources.

As a die hard LOTR fan and HP fan, there is no doubt that JK ripped off from LOTR. In addition to the similarities that Baba pointed out, there is a lake under a mountain, a creepy, unlikeable creature (Gollum vs Kreacher), evil soul hidden in objects
@ajcliff8642
@ajcliff8642 Год назад
Lake under the mountains? Hard press. Which Lake under the mountains are we talking about in HP? Kreacher is not unlikable or creepy. It's to show what internal racism does to anyone. Kreacher is hateful 'cause tgat is all he has ever know. He himself says that he lives to serve house black and has been loyal to the house even when no one except Narcissa was there for him to serve for 13 long years. It's not because he is unreasonable but that is how he has lived since he was born. It shows how the same system is perpetuated by the very own people trapped in the system. He hates Hermione and calls her a mudblood, hates Sirius 'cause in his words he is a blood traitor but was exceedingly loyal to Regulas 'cause Regulas cared and respected him. Later kreacher serves Harry and sheds his own bigoted nature and accepts his a his lord portraying that even those trapped in the hateful cycle can break free and start anew. Gollum on the other hand is an intresting case study. His corruption by the ring doesn't make him an "evil soul". I could write an essay but judging from your nonsense comment, I guess it would fly pass you. It's intriguing that you can yourself a "die hard" LOTR & HP fan but reach for comparison that are probably the poorest example (mind you that there are some good ones lmao) that even a casual fan would think twice before expressing.
