@@MelaniePoparad It was because he wasn't killed at Isengard in the books. He is killed much later, still by Wormtongue, at the Shire right at the end of the War of the Ring after the Scouring of the Shire. I can assume that's the only reason they left it out of the theatrical release.

@@Badgerman494 As I recall from my theater experience. They don't show Wormtongue with a knife at all (making him even more of a coward), they make Legolas' shot look like it killed him (somehow hitting him in the back while facing the group, which always weirded me until I saw the extended), he fell (with a not arrow like thing coming out of his back), It shows his landing trajectory to be the spike wheel, but a split second before he hits, the camera switches to the group's reactions with the sound of him being skewered. I don't know why they shied away from the wizard bloodshed in this war torn movie, but for some reason the theatric version didn't like showing the actual human looking characters death wounds.

Deagol was Smeagol's cousin. While the Ring does corrupt anyone over a long enough period of time, Smeagol was snared instantly because he was not innocent to begin with. He was already corrupt in his heart; the Ring only exacerbated it. The Ring latches onto a person's selfish desires and promises to give them to you. It takes great willpower to not give in to that temptation. Smeagol never ignored his selfish desires before he saw the Ring, so it took no time at all to ensnare him. The reason hobbits like Bilbo and Frodo are able to resist it for so long is because Hobbits are pretty unselfish by nature. They have no great ambitions, so it takes far longer for the Ring to corrupt them; but the closer it draws to Mordor, the greater its power and influence are, even over someone as selfless as Frodo. Even Sam is tempted to claim it for the brief period of time he holds it. So the fact that he is able to not give in to temptation and willingly relinquish the Ring while inside Mordor is incredibly impressive, and speaks to the goodness of his heart. But in the heart of Mount Doom, there is not a person alive who would have had the will to destroy it. It could only happen by a twist of fate and an accident. To that end, Gollum's selfishness was actually important. His lust for the Ring was the only thing that could have destroyed it.

Fallohides like the Took clan were taller, slimmer and closer with the Elves and preferred hunting in the ancient days to farming, Harfoots (The Baggins Clan for instance), preferred farming and the company of Dwarves. Stoors were known to be the only Hobbits who handled boats, were taller and often wore boots in muddy weather and were the only Hobbits to have downy, wispy beards.
@Kainlarsen
@Kainlarsen 3 года назад
Smeagol was not an evil person, though. Just a greedy one at heart. The ring takes even the smallest kernel of greed, anger, etc, and stokes it like a fire. Few beings in the world could truly say they could resist its power. Even gandalf knew he would be corrupted by it over time. As the novel says, if Gandalf was to take the ring, he would become self-righteous instead of righteous, he would make evil seem good and good seem detestable.
@damien1065
@damien1065 3 года назад
It’s not about purity of hearts it’s about one’s ambition. That is why Gandalf feared the ring as well. Hobbits are content with living in their small village and don’t desire power of any kind. Sméagol obviously was an exception, or maybe the ring had been lost for so long that it was screaming out for any individual to find it.

The story of Denethor is actually very sad. He was a wise and just ruler, and thwarted many of Sauron's plans over his years by using a Palantir; the seeing stone that nearly wrecked Pippin. For decades, Denethor did battle with Sauron mentally through the seeing stone, and held him at bay. But the years took their toll, and what we see in this film is the result of a lifetime of having Sauron whisper insidious and venomous things into your mind unceasingly.
@mrdavman13
@mrdavman13 Год назад
The fact he lasted those decades was a great testament to the willpower and mental strength Denethor originally possessed. Only those of true numenorean lineage can use a palantir effectively, (Maiar are exceptions) but that is why pippin mind is almost broken immediately. Even if it wasn’t Sauron using the palantir would’ve taken a huge toll on pippin.

It has been reported that the editor for his books kept changing "Dwarves" to "Dwarfs," and finally confronted Tolkien about his continued misuse of the English language. "I think you should look that up in the Oxford English Dictionary," he is reported to have said. Tolkien replied, "I'm an editor of the OED," and he was. After that in Tolkiens books it has always been "Dwarves." (Possibly an apocryphal story, but funny none the less.)

@@Big_Tex That's really true. The movies are amazing, and I honor Peter Jackson for what he accomplished. There's no way you could make a 100% faithful movie portrayal of the Lord of the Rings, and overall I think Peter Jackson did a great job picking out the important parts and supporting the extremely rich world creation of Tolkien. But almost every time he adds something of his own in, usually (I think) to heighten tension, it ends up being confusing. For instance, the scene we just watched in which Aragorn challenges the dead to fight for him, and then we get a scene that seems designed to make it look like they have refused and are trying to kill Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli, followed immediately by the king of the dead showing up to say they will fight. Symbolically, the sword mirrors Aragorn himself. One small moment that has a big impact, is when Aragorn is talking to the army of the dead, and he outright states "I am Isildur's heir" It's the first time we see Aragorn proud to proclaim his bloodline and heritage, that he has spent so long denying and being afraid of because of the weakness and mistakes of the Kings of old. Aragorn accepting his past and his family legacy is a really big moment for him personally as a character and shows the shift from Aragorn, the Ranger to Elessar, King of Gondor

@@jeffburnham6611 Hobbiton is just a small village without great importance in the Shire, it just happens to be Frodo's home town. Hobbit comes from the Northman word Holbytla, "Hole Maker", which is what Men called them in their old homeland, and the word mutated along the way as they travelled. All the Hobbits originate from the edges of Mirkwood where Smeagol lived, but they fled the shadow of the Necromancer into Eriador, and eventually the Shire. Some returned to their own homeland when the threat of Angmar came to Eriador, and Smeagol descends from them. The word Hobbit is only used in the Shire, so Smeagol wouldn't have known it, but he's definitely the same race as the Shire folk. As for 'Riverfolk', it's just shorthand term that Peter Jackson used in the films to avoid bogging down the story with complicated history.

The ring brings out the worst in each individual that it comes in contact with. The more power they possess, the more they lusted for power, the stronger the pull toward the darkness. That's why Frodo could carry the ring. The least powerful beings in the world had to take it. Frodo sought no power, therefore he had no will to own the ring himself. It's also why Galadriel was so relieved when she did not take the ring when Frodo offered it to her. It's why Gandalf couldn't take the ring into Mordor and why the Eagles couldn't just fly it to Mount Doom. The all realized they were too powerful and would be too tempted by the ring.

There's a HUGELY important detail about how Sméagol came by the Ring: Sméagol murdered his cousin for it, taking the Ring in blood and violence. But when Bilbo claimed the Ring from him during the events of the Hobbit, he had the opportunity to strike down Gollum, but chose to spare him instead. Thus when he took the Ring, it was out of pity and mercy. This is a significant part of WHY he was able to give it up at the beginning of Lord of the Rings; the Ring wasn't able to get as complete a hold over him because of his restraint. Slinker and Stinker is an artifact from the book, in which Sam refers to Gollum's two personalities this way throughout Two Towers and Return of the King. The sad thing is Gollum ALMOST repented in the books; there was a moment on the approach to Cirith Ungol where he very nearly reneged on his plan to betray them. Ironically, it was Sam's suspicion and protectiveness of Frodo that sealed his betrayal. Gothmog, the deformed Orc who leads the armies as the Witch-King's lieutenant, was modeled on Harvey Weinstein as a "@#$% You" over Weinstein's interference and attempt to kill the Trilogy after Miramax decided to pull the plug on the project.

"prove her worth" she doesn't "prove her worth" by going into combat and risking the lineage of Rohan; she does it by staying behind and seeing to the needs of her people who are _not_ going into battle; who will have to rebuild and repair when it is over... and who will need a leader if the battle is lost, to see to their survival under the shadow of Sauron.

And she answered: ‘All your words are but to say: you are a woman, and your part is in the house. But when the men have died in battle and honour, you have leave to be burned in the house, for the men will need it no more. But I am of the House of Eorl and not a serving-woman. I can ride and wield blade, and I do not fear either pain or death.’

I think I may have pulled something from how hard I laughed at that bonk sound effect, I was very much not expecting that

VKunia - Could I recommend a movie called Sorcerer from 1977? I know it is a bit outside your wheelhouse. But it is an awesome film that is underappreciated. Underappreciated is probably the wrong word. Under viewed, most people who see it love it.

I have a similar scar on my upper lip. I know it's not relevant to anything; I think I'm just trying to connect awkwardly because most of your first-time reactions to the story is so similar to my own reactions and thoughts when I first watched the LoTR trilogy. ^_^

In the books "Slinker" was the nickname that Sam gave to Smeagol and "Stinker" to Golum to distinguish between the two personalities. He picked up much faster than Frodo that there were two different entities they were dealing with, and made a distinction between them; often wondering which one he was talking to. He did start to come around to Golum though, right up until the last betrayal (in the books, Golum didn't separate the two and led them both into Shelob's lair. Sam and Frodo both thought Smeagol was on their side right up until he disappeared on them in the cave)

smeagol was pretty much a hobbit, yeah - its barely mentioned in the films but the books and extended writing of tolkien have incredibly thorough genealogies for the characters, for instance elrond, arwen and aragorn can be traced back at least 3thousand years to a single family, spoilers - Arwen and Aragorn are cousins - but hey, thats what monarchies are all about, right? incest is best!

If you want more of middle- earth, you could watch and react to the hobbit film trilogy. It’s not as great as lotr, but in my opinion still very good. Liked your reactions:))
