I love how Varg was so pissed off because they got a Jew to play him in "Lords of Chaos." 🤣

Oy vey no one likes an antisemite. Also wait Emory Cohen's pretty good looking so I don't know why he's complaining. He's certainly more handsome than the real Varg. I'd say just take it as a win. lol

I quite enjoyed the movie, even though it’s only loosely based on what happened. Fun fact, Akerlund was actually a drummer for First Wave of Black Metal band Bathory, whom influenced many of the Norwegian Black Metal bands.

The director (Akerlund) really knew the story. He was a black metal drummer in those early years (even recorded stuff for Bathory). I think Euronymous family put their fingers on it and screwed it all up.

If you want to know the spirit of norwegian Black Metal scene I'd suggest the documentary Until the Light Takes Us, or the 2013's iceland movie METALHEAD.

I’m a black metal fan and I really wanted to like the movie, but if they would’ve just told the real story it would’ve been a way better movie. The real story is so much better. They didn’t have to Hollywood it all up. I know one of the family’s worked with them but still That’s why us metal guys didn’t like it. I wanted to like it though.

also i think partly the reason why there arent many black metal songs in the film is because most black metal bands didnt allow their music to be played in the movie because you know the "true" essence of black metal is to not commercialize it plus the book had such a bad rep to begin with. there were several black metal songs played, and some were thrash metal where black metal was derived from

Really enjoyed your review of this film. I've been a metalhead since I was about 10 (lets just say it's been a very long time since then) but I really didn't like this film, it's not exactly a "bad" film, but as a biopic of the band and telling the story of what happened it really misses the mark. I loved the fact that Mayhem and Varg refused to let them use their music in it too, Lol. There's a fascinating and pretty disturbing story to tell around the whole scene and hopefully a proper, and good movie about it all will come out one day.

I do hope so as well. Because I do not mind that it is a critical view of the band, there are perfectly valid reasons to be critical, but it feels like its uncomfortable with the subject matter itself.

I think a lot of black metal true believers hate this movie because it de-mythologizes mayhem, instead of these evil incarnate blackened Satanic demigods here they are shown as just a bunch of dumb bigoted teenagers committing petty crime and then turning on each other. I guess its telling of events may be "inaccurate" technically (apparently this issue goes back to the lords of chaos book) but idk to what degree, and I certainly don't take Vargs words about what happened as gospel. I think it would be basically impossible to make a movie out of these events that black metal fans would like, personally they are by far my least favorite metal subculture, by and large very elitist, cruel and bigoted and I say this as someone who is pretty active in the metal scene (attending shows, playing in bands etc) Also if you haven't seen it "until the light takes us" is a more straightforward documentary about a lot of this same subject matter. Also highly recommend the necrobutcher interview from the film "metal a headbangers journey" it is hilarious
@GirlBehindTheCounter
@GirlBehindTheCounter Год назад
Honestly good point. I also think the retrospection and age has not helped that narrative at all. The truth of the story is likely in-between the negative and positive accounts. Its also very likely Mayhem themselves have really mythologized their own hand in all of this because people like begging themselves up and putting meaning to desperate actions. Likely the world will never really know what happened.

My impression was rather that they were simultaneously a bit too "nice," softening the edges of Euronymous and Dead's characters especially, and too petty (a few weird jokes made at Varg's expense which is odd because it's ... not very hard to make fun of Varg by just relating things that actually happened. Like if you want to point and laugh at Varg just describe some of his more pathetic antics, like how he very transparently tried to frame the band Salem for terrorism). It also just felt really really icky and exploitative because yeah it didn't glorify the band but it also didn't have anything to say other than that what they did was bad, highlighting everything shocking and disgusting without much comment. A good example of this is how they treated Faust's crimes. Even though Faust is really not that big of a character in the film, they show every second of his murder of Magne Andreassen. We never even get Magne's name, but we get to see every moment of his violent death. Ugh.

@@GirlBehindTheCounter I am pretty sure the reality is that a handful of crazy people did crazy stuff and because we are drawn to these absurd things it gets more coverage, the result is the perception becomes purely based on events caused by that handful of problematic people. I cant say that I dont like the movie as I didnt watch it as the trailer made me cringe too much, but I am pretty confident that I wouldnt be a fan. I also think the original comment is a bit too political, a loud minority dont reflect the entire scene and even if it did you can like the music. The artist having views that you dont agree with shouldnt change the art itself either, I think it is a shame that people dont think this way. I have a very black on white view of this as I even bought the album "a decade of hate" by "abyssic hate" which is banned on discogs probably due to its lyrical themes, I dont agree with extreme views but I bought it based on the music being great. I also own 2 burzum albums, while his opinions may be bad but the music is still good and that is what matters to me. I find it pretty immature to not be able to enjoy music while also not agreeing with the artist and/or forming opinions on an entire scene just based on a handful of loud people that probably even the scene itself dont like (looking at original comment)

@currentofthesnake8486
@currentofthesnake8486 4 дня назад
Rightly so, because the film uses the usual worn-out metal cliché that these founding fathers of the second wave fought against. Their aim was to make radical art in the genre of metal. Also in the sense of what young radical artists do when they are fed up with a trend like the Satanic Panic. This becomes clear when it is emphasized in interviews that none of them were real Satanists. And the film still turns them into Beavis and Butthead. From a cinematic point of view, it's complete rubbish, with worn-out images and music of Black metal doesn't play any role. If anything, this movie adaptation should have been like the movie "Control".
