My father got me this sword back in 1986 when I was in 6th grade and I still have it now… it’s wrapped in a towel in the trunk at the foot of my bed. It’s high carbon steel, not stainless and it’s got a full tang and it’s awesome! I’m 50.
I’ll say! He was the best! Would do anything for his family! Found out I wanted to be able to see in the dark while camping with Scouts and so he picked up a surplus Russian Cyclops night vision monocular from a gun show we would attend when they came to town. Totally out of the blue, I never asked for it and he just knew I’d love and use it, and he was right! I still have it to this day also!
I was fortunate to get an atlantean sword made from 5160 spring steel. It has a bronze guard and pommel made from molds from the originals. Jody Samson (R.I.P.) sharpened it. I've had it for many years. I got a small paragraph about myself and the sword in the 20th anniversary book about the atlantean sword. Always loved Ron Cobb's design, may he also rest in peace.

No, pastiche Conan probably shouldn't wield the movie sword, both because it's from the movie and because Conan never had a personal weapon that he carried through his adventures. BUT... I understand why Conan fans like the Atlantean sword. And I have to agree, you're right, Zub's handling of the sword in the comic was no more than an enjoyable Easter egg and well done for what it was.
Well said. Indeed, the Howardian Conan does not possess a "signature weapon"; he fights with whatever is at his disposal. This could be a bastard sword, an axe, or even a broken chair leg. Ultimately, Conan himself is the greatest weapon. Anything in his hands has the potential to be deadly.
As cool as the sword is, I think the only Atlantean weapon Conan needs is Kull's battle-axe. At least it's alluded to be Kull's axe in "The Phoenix on the Sword." Also, lore-wise in battle King Conan carries a great-sword as long as he is tall, which is way cooler than a bastard sword.
It's all myth and legend surrounding a great warrior named Conan. These tales are ancient, originating from times long forgotten, which means their content may vary from one narrator to another. If Howard's works are considered the canonical scripture, then the pastiches and comics can be viewed as the apocrypha.
IMO Conan is a flexible character. Different interpretations do not damage him. I have read the original stories, read some of the comics and also loved Arnold's movies. One doesn't cancel out the others.
As a little kid and this story arc of Conan as he left his bonds and chains and as he roamed across the lands to find this tomb this very old tune of Old times past I wonder inside that crypt was a large man dead for probably a very long long time his size was astronomical because Conan when he came to that giant the knees were very large and well the leg sword was a regular sized sword I guess but I wonder I wonder that sword and how old it has been in that tome
So the sword the Atlantic sword it's probably between the 20,000 to 10,000 years old cuz Atlantis one of the earliest settlements on Earth Conan's timeline is just I want to say ancient bygone era is aquilonia mentioned.
Evey time I see the movie or talk about it, or hear it's music my mind keeps going to how cool it would be to have an open world rpg in the Hiborian Age, battling monsters, exploring ancient ruins. You could have a quest for pieces of an old atlantean armor that would be the best in the game. The lore is so great! Nice video btw!
It's a really cool looking sword. Played a big part in why I've spent 20 years learning to use & make swords. Though I'd be lying if i said it was a good sword as far actual use. It's way too overbuilt & heavy even for a huge guy like Arnold to wield in combat effectively. However rule of cool obviously trumps this in film. Lol
That's true people think about Conan they think about the Arnold movies more than the books or comics But I faint the atlantean Sword is a bad ass looks Sword I'm not gonna lie.
Depends on the generation of the Conan Fan and their upbringing ect.. Myself the Conan Books were some of the Very First Books I owned and read for myself back when I was a pre-teen.( Am in my 50's now). As to the debate about whether or not Conan should be weilding the Atlantean Sword or not? My answer is both YES and NO. Yes as in it is a sword, but NO due to the fact that in the Howard Books, Conan never really had a personal weapon, but instead used whatever was at hand.
In the movie Crom gave him the sword, In the book he killed him and took it. In the book Conan could not kill him with the sword so he tricked him into following him into the fire Conan had started earlier. It was a special sword it was made of steel a vary rare sword indeed.
The original movie was awesome. The Destroyer was a joke. Let’s not even talk about the Mamoa movie. I don’t remember if the sword was in the tv show? As a Conan fan in all his forms, I don’t think it’s a big deal that he has the sword. He has had many swords over the years. It’s just one more.
I was never a fan of the sword. In the books, Conan goes through swords like a seamstress goes through thread. The movie sword looks cool, but like a mall ninja sword, if it were a practical design there would be examples of similar historical weapons.
