TRANSCRIPT:
In the year 2055, a shortage of oil forces several nations to the brink of war, resulting in World War 3. Earth now ravaged by wide-scale use of nuclear weapons, world powers negotiate for peace to save what's left of the world. With time and and resources running out, a coalition between the world's most powerful companies and governments is formed, called the United Colonial Nations, with one goal in mind: to colonize outer-space.
The first colony ships leave Earth in 2095, headed for Alpha Centauri, where they find two candidates for colonization: a lush, Earth-like world and a habitable but harsh planet. But before humans could be sent to these planets, six colony ships disappear during a solar flare and are presumably lost, hitting the UCN where it hurts the most: their pockets. Now forced to open up the Alpha Centauri system to bidders to refill their coffers, the UCN sells the colonization rights of both planets to the Helghan Corporation.
The Helghan Corporation quickly travel to Alpha Centauri, first arriving on the inhospitable planet, Helghan, where they leave a select few to exploit the planet's abundant energy resources while the rest push on to the second planet, Vekta. The Helghan Administration quickly dominate trade and travel in space which forces the UCN to place an embargo on the system to which the Helghans refuse. With no choice, the UCN sends the ISA to retake Vekta, starting the First Extrasolar War. The Helghans are easily defeated but with the formation of the Helghan Empire led by Scolar Visari, they invade and retake Vekta in the Second Extrasolar War. Now it's up to the ISA to protect Earth and her colonies from the wrath of Helghan Empire.

They are fighting a brutal war for their nation's very survival, and need to be prepared to use every tool at their disposal just to survive. Mandatory drafts, WMDs, orbital bombardments, their very existence is contingent on being able to survive an onslaught from a foe hellbent on their continued subjugation or outright destruction.

Machi Nami Before the war or even when Helghan corp bought Vekta, the Helghan corporation was the one that colonized the planet, for many years they had petitioned the UCN to be able to out right buy the planets since they had colonized them and lived on them for decades. The UCN ended up needing a shit ton of cash, so they finally sold Helghan and Vekta to the Helghast corporation. The Helghast legally bought both Vekta and Helghan, the problem comes from the fact that Vekta is a desirable eden world and Helghan while being a inhospitable wasteland, had a abundance of natural resources, this was major amount of currency being generated. The UCN regretting selling the planets to the Helghan, they build a fucking army to take back Vekta and push the Helghan corporation off the planet. The Helghan corporation wasn't expecting to go to war with the UCN, so they only form of defense they had was just a police force. Most survivors were exiled to other planet. Not only were they forced from Vekta and force to live on a shitty desert world, but the UCN placed a embargo on the planet, the Helghan didn't get any support for over a hundred years. On this planet the Helghan go under vast mutations and many die at a early age. None are able to grow hair, and all need to breath through a respirator. The mutations also make the Helghan grow in size considerable. Enters Scolar Visari, he is one of the first few that was able to fully adapt tot he harshness of Helghan, he was able to breath without a respirator and he was able to grow hair(he shaves it so he can be like his brethren). Upset about how the Helghan have been treated, he begins a 10 year campaign to raise quality of life and moral, the shanty towns you see in Killzone 2 are remnants of before his reign. Visari convinces the Helghast that they are no longer human, with their massively increased size and other mutations. With moral at a all time high and the military he believes adequate, he begins his invasion of Vekta to reclaim the world and begins the events of Killzone 1. The Helghan mirror the nazi's in many ways, the intro to killzone one makes that clear, so they are seen as the natural enemy's in the game. However their causes and motivations mirror more of the american war of Independence, instead of fighting british rule, the Helghan are fighting to get their planet back. Honestly I think the developers like making us play as the bad guys, their was amazing potential to capitalize but they just failed.

You know, in 2013 "Killzone: Mercenary" was published, where the main protagonist Arran Danner worked for Helghast. He was of course forced to work there, but that was the only time we were fighting for Helghast in the whole game franchise, of course in campaign.

Honestly, even though neither side are exactly "the good guys"... I lean more towards the Hellghast being slightly more in the right than the ISA. The initial conflict was purely a matter of Earth deciding that it had the right to do whatever it wanted to the colonies and to hell with Hellghast rights even though their colony was chartered. The second war, the one we play in the games, is a direct result of Earths economic blockade and political policies following the first war. In short, the Hellghast view Earth and by extension Vetca as, 'having it coming,' thus the brutality of Hellghast troops. Given the same situation... if the British invaded my home continent which was formed from chartered colonies and took it over shipping my fellow Americans off around the world... I would view them as, 'having it coming,' as well.

+Logan Snider the hellgast are a mashup of all the worst goverment's in human history as shown in the mediocre shadowfall where they turn half of vecta into a distopia constantly breaking treaties and killing the natives who were kind enough to let them live there after earth's navy completely annihilated helgan's military in a time-span so short it hardly counts as a battle the fact that the UCG didn't exterminate their mutated asses after the 2nd game was surprising enough, and honestly i cant see what people like about these nazi like factions in games

I don't know about being on their side, but they have a far more valid reason for the war: the ISA invaded and started killing them. I think they're within their rights to defend themselves. I can only hope you're not someone with a 12 yr old mentality and decided the Helghans are the villains because they have a sinister name and military uniform.

***** That was Scholar Visari's idea (basically after the first extrasolar war the helghan corp tried to keep peace but then Visari (who was still just a rich noble) faked his assassination attempt and blamed it on Helghan corp and after alot of rioting He made a deal with Helghan corp, that He becomes dictator of the planet (they had no choice but to allow it) after he became dictator he started turning the helghast to war saying that they should take back what was rightfully theirs.

we'll they still commit hundreds of war crimes like shooting POW:s and unarmed civilians and if they do take prisoners they take them for brutal interrogation or experimentation. Neither of the sides are the good guys. ISA are gray, Helghast are grey.

Can't really call him a bad character. After all, he's one of _the_ primary weapon manufacturers, the other being Visari Corp. If not for Jorhan, there wouldn't be the StA brand. Sure, he's way too deep in his "Fuck 'em" way of thinking about manpower, but you can't really blame him for that, now can you? C-can you?.. Shit, I think you can... Still tho. Dem guns are top-tier and for that I can overlook his character and leave only his badass name in the equation.

ISA was not sent to fight the Helghast in the First Extrasolar War, it was the UCA. ISA was formed on Vekta before the First Extrasolar War to create a local military force to prevent the UCA from stretching its forces too thin, while keeping the ISA intentionally weaker than the UCA to prevent them from ever rebelling against Earth. Every UCN colony has its own ISA branch, though Vektan ISA is easily the most powerful due to the threat of the Helghast. ISA were already fighting the rebelling Helghan Corporation before the UCA fleet arrived.

Not true. Both sided are like the American revolution. England had colonies....UCN and the colonies wanted to succeed. They didnt want to pay the taxes and dumped the tea in the Boston bay. That is sorta what happened here. Except the Helghast were taxing all vessels and trade coming through alpha centuri(i believe). And that was part of the reason for the ultimate take back of both Vekta and Helghan

If you get right down to it, the UCN is. The ISA is the "protagonist group", but the Helghast definitely have the moral high ground in the game. I mean, the go out, colonize two worlds, then some outsiders come and try and wipe them out. As much as the game tries to make them look like space nazis, you can't help but feel bad for them and you start to hate the ISA.

Barely so under Visari, as he was part of the private sector. Under Orlock he had more influence without centralized limitations. While Orlock didn't tolerate Stahl as Visari did, the government weakened after Visari's death leading to greater potential for Stahl to influence the nation at will.

By Helghan law, the private sector was not to involve itself with state affairs, as noticed by the conversation between Stahl and Orlock after Visari's death. So technically, the Helghast state only became weakened in terms of monopolistic corruption when Visari died.

linnes56 I would research alternate energy sources. I would not invade another place; killing their people and killing my own people to capture that place. Stupid, small minded people are the ones who resort to warring; as long as someone has a properly functioning brain on your side, there's always a non-violent solution to every problem. Civilization on started happening AFTER people realized that. Look into history, all the pointless fighting did nothing. It was the people who chose to create progress, rather than fight, that made the world as good as it is today. Hell, look at how crap, countries like in the Middle East have it, they're always fighting; and look how good countries like ours who aren't at war have it.

It's a callback to WW2. Germany (Helghan) got fucked over at the end of WW1 (First Vektan War) by the Allies (ISA), but were later united by Hitler (Visari) who remilitarized, revitalized, and rekindled pride in the nation, waging war to retake lost ground and take revenge on the ones who hoped to keep them down.

Honestly, I would love to see a PlanetSide-style Killzone mmo game where another war breaks out between the ISA and the Helghast but this time, the players make the history, and they can pick a side (though I think the ISA will be heavily outnumbered cause way too many would join the Helghast and I imagine there are a few people who sympathize with the ISA) but I don't know which planet would be best for the battles

There are no traditional "good guys" in Killzone, the beauty of the lore. In so however, the Helghast and Helghan are not the good guys! The Helghast and Helghan are victims to an onslaught of invasions from the ISA and UCN, but the reason it happened was because Helghan essentially monopolized the safegaurd of humanity! This is where the conflict began. Because the Helghan corporation owned, although legally, all of Alpha Centauri (again the safeguard of humanity) and then started restricting access, legally or not, it makes sense why the UCN would consider using force to remove said restrictions. This doesn't excuse what the ISA did, but you need context. The ISA, just like Helghan, were seemingly forced to make very tough and very questionable decisions. No matter the reason, such decisions (which almost all could be labeled as crimes against humanity) were made often enough that no justification warrants such a sweeping amnesty from responsibility.

Khalil Pontikes The Helghast. I, and most people who know the games history, are pro - Helghast. UCN/ISA commited mass murder on Helghast citizens, stole Vekta from them, and forced them into a pitful, deformed existence on planet Helghan. And all because the UCN didn't like the trade prices the Helghast legally put in place. UCN/ISA are invaders, greedy oppressors, and radicalizers who brought the radicalization of Helghan upon themselves. There is huge demands for a game where you play as a Helghast soldier... and we are still holding out hope, especially after the way they ended Shadow Fall.

Khalil Pontikes People basically are just led to think that the ISA is good since it's troops wear blue, and look like soldiers while Helghast troops wear red and look like Space Nazis in gas masks. That of course is because ISA Chem bombings messed up the physical state of the Helghan race beyond repair, but most people forget that bit.

Monachus Bibe Actually, the Helghast's main agenda is to reconquer Vekta, their homeland that was stolen from them. And the only "genocide" that we've seen from the Heghast was during the beginning of the Second Extrasolar War. After those events, Helghast never laid a finger on Vektan civilians. May I remind you that the ISA are more intent on destroying the Helghast? The ISA, with orders from the UCN, unjustly invaded Vekta, home of the original Helghast, killing and pillaging in the name of "freedom" and "righteousness," evicted all the survivors to Helghan, hoping they'd be killed by the planet's poisonous atmosphere, set a blockade on them, leading to a great depression, starvation, and famine. You could make the argument that Jorhan Stahl planned on nuking Earth but nobody on Helghan supported his idea and Orlock tried to have him arrested for that. Oh, and let's not forget Sinclair, the VSA (Vektan Security Agency) leader, who wanted Massar to create a bio weapon in order to wipe out all of New Helghan (there was an ISA scientist in Killzone: Mercenary who had the same idea) and this was after he ordered VSA Shadow Marshals to harass them by blowing up their statue of Visari they worked their ass lff to build. So please explain to how the Helghast are "MUH EVUL NAZYS!!!"

I only played the first Killzone a long time ago, so I don't remember a lot from it, but based on this I would say the only reason the Helghast are the bad guys is because the game makes you fight them

Everyone is getting the backstory wrong. The ISA were created on all colonies and acted as a military. Helghsn Corporation had to allow ISA to form on Vekta. UCN wanted more taxes from Helghan Corporation and Helghan said no and seceded from UCN. Local ISA military on Vekta were forced into Guerilla Warfare for a year. At the remd of the year, UCN arrived over Helghan and destroyed the Helghan space station and Helghan navy. They then left a small force in orbit to make sure it was secure. When UCN Army/ Navy arrived in Vekta orbit the Helghan Corporation surrendered. The Helghan company was dissolved, it's board members sent to Earth for trial. The ISA then were given the hands of Government on Vekta by the UCN and left Vekta/Helghan. UCN also allowed ISA to govern Helghan if it wished. For 2 years after this pro Helghan Corporation supporters fought a guerilla war on Vekta. The governor on Vekta gave the guerillas ships if they left. The ships went to Helghan.

As much as I've been waiting for this lore and grateful that it came out, I can't shake the feeling that this video doesn't do the storyline justice. Granted, it may be because I find the animation and narration underwhelming compared to the previous videos, but I believe some major parts of the Killzone universe were left out. Even so, congratulations on the effort and I look forward to more videos in the future.

Just some elements that I think were critical like the space station incident, the fact that the higs did not look like armored red-eyed higs when they arrived at Helghan and that they biologically changed with adaptation in a few generations. Then again this is just a 1 minute overall plot :]

The way the lore is written, basically there is no Good vs Evil. It's all just how you perceive yourself. Because we play as the ISA, we see the Helghast as being this evil and destructive force. It's not our job to argue or question the war, because as a ISA soldier it is merely our role to fight the enemy and protect what we're commanded to protect. So even though the Helghast have a good reason for starting the war to reclaim their planet, it's us (players) of the ISA who gotta fight them.

Note: UCN don't send the ISA, the ISA were already on the planet (attacked by Helghan forces during a planet-wide coup), the UCN sent their own fleet which took a year to arrive (the ISA were fighting a guerrilla-war) and the UCN dominated and the Helghan Corporation gave up.

The Helghan corporation was the first to discover Helghan and Vekta, as Vekta was names after the corporations CEO. The UCN only invaded the Alpha Centuri colonies because they didn't want any other colonies declaring themselves independent because they rely on them for resources, so they made an example of the Helghast and basically forced them off Vekta so they had no choice but to live on a planet with a near toxic atmosphere. I can see why the Helghast aren't happy

True, I admit the current (second extrasolar war) Helghan regime under Visari was remarkably brutal and militaristic. My poin was that at least they evacuated the civilians, they could have left them there, which if anything would have furthered the Helghast's goal, which was to make the ISA look like the ultimate villains.

Thing is, the UCA had other systems under it's control that could easily support Earth, they were merely scared they would also want independence, hence why they made an example of the Helghast. If anything the UCA was almost as totalitarian as the Helghast were at the time of the second extrasolar war

It's the conditions on Helghan. Radiation, fumes and all sorts of stuff that gives you that lovely complexion that the Helghast have (joking, obviously).
