Persephone murders mortals. 🌺 But Minthe slaps a slaver. 🌱 I can’t get over the fact that a nymph from the underclass slapped a slave-owning king who rules his realm like a tyrant, and everyone treats her like a non-pink child murderer.

Oof the idea that Persephone is petty and mean to anyone she knows can't fight back and when someone else is doing her dirty work. This is why you have to sit with your plot and your scenes because if you just write and don't edit then you end up having characters who behave the opposite of how you want the reader to see them.

Yeah her characterization is all over the place, especially when she "one-ups" characters like the paparazzi guy in the hospital, Ares, and Minthe, but does *nothing* to Apollo. And oftentimes the stuff that she does to these people to "get one over them" just comes off as petty and mean vs deserved. It'd be one thing if it was an acknowledged flaw of Persephone's that she's manipulative and mean to people she can get away with being mean to, but can't stand up to people when it really matters, but this goes totally unaddressed throughout the story so we can only assume it's unintentional! One thing that always bothered me… they made Hades 1,000 and Persephone 19. She’s a goddess though. I know it’s meant to portray the age gap between them but that’s an age crater. Honestly they could have made her 400 or 500 and it be less weird. Probably the most well written part was Persephone’s struggle with losing her virginity to rape, (something I experienced myself) the feelings she had about it, the guilt, shame, anxiety. But… why did they have to do my boy Apollo dirty like that?

Because in the OG myth, Persephone chose Apollo over Hades (who kidnapped and raped her) and we can't have that! Best to sink that ship as early as possible! I'm sorry that you had to go through something similar. While I believe the moment was done well, the aftermath was completely bungled because it felt like Rachel didn't know and didn't want to handle an issue of that magnitude. It might even get in the way of the fluff! And yeah I agree with you on the age gap, it's totally weird and unnecessary and, combined with Persephone's low independence and maturity, sinister. My friends were talking about this and they had the idea of keeping Hades 1000 and making Persephone 40. Admittedly this was a little bit of a joke but it gives Persephone more world experience and agency and makes the age gap feel less weird.

I feel so conflicted about the rape because it feels so relatable, especially personally as someone who grew up homeschooled in an isolated smalltown who finally escaped into city life at young adulthood and found myself in situations I wasn't prepared for, that whole aspect of the story makes me feel represented. On the other hand, the fact that the rape is obviously just meant to be a way to create contrast in Apollo to Hades, an excuse to push Persephone closer to him, makes me feel so icky. The fact that after it happens she spends all night on the phone with HADES, a wealthy businessman/royal! massively older than her because she's scared to talk to her mom and she has basically no friends in the city and nobody to talk to, is so realistic and SCARY! NOT romantic 🤢

Im rewatching this whole series and while you were talking about how Hecate not being romantically interested in anyone is directly connected to her wearing pants and having a more unique, less traditionally feminine design I realized that thats probably the reason why Minthe has/is supposed to have a different bodytype than all the other women. Idk if Im making sense here but it kinda feels like RS only gives her female characters different body types (and non-traditionally feminine clothing styles) to signal to the audience that theyre 'undesirable' to men

Yeah I agree completely. All of the "good" female characters who are portrayed as attractive and desirable share Persephone's body type. The only outliers are Demeter, Hecate, Hestia, Athena, and Minthe, who are all either "horrible/nasty women" or aren't heterosexual so they don't have to be "attractive" to men. Artemis and Hera used to have different heights and body types compared to Persephone but as the comic's gone on, nearly all of the female characters (including Minthe) have become shorter and more and more stacked.

What so messed up is that this chapter validates all Demeters fears Persephone was praying upon by a much older and much more powerful than God and he got something out of her. He got a kiss, but still approves it Persephone so naïve that she can’t realize that she’s being used, but Demeters the bad guy for trying to protect her from it.

It's amazing how much I missed while reading this series. I never binged the entire thing in one sitting, so I never realized all the plot holes, inconsistency, and contradictions of the world rules and characters. It's insane.

I think the medium shoulders some of that blame too...part of the reason I think I forgot so much of episodes 100-130 is because for this video I read it on my phone whereas in previous videos I read it on my desktop. I'm positive there's some psychic effect linked to scrolling that makes your reading comprehension take a nosedive. That combined with the weekly format and bright colors serves to dull critical thinking and retention a lot I think. The other thing is that Lore Olympus waves a lot of shiny fanservice and jokes in front of your face to deliver some short term satisfaction with where the story is headed, again postponing a critical view of the story in its entirety up to the point of the latest episode. It's only recently that I've been seeing a lot more criticism of the series because now the art is unpardonably bad and you don't have to have any background or understanding of art to see that, the UwU faces which pretty much nobody likes are far more frequent, and the filler/constant backtracking with no plot resolution only to rush a conclusion in the finale is becoming really really obvious. Also, Hades and Persephone are together now so the fanservice is boring and feels hollow.

Hekate doesn’t go around trumpeting it but she’s another of the eternal maidens. Which… would actually have been interesting to explore between her and Persephone while they’re “coworkers” or whatever you call what happened. Hekate talking about how she’s not interested and neither is Artemis but Persephone is so maybe she shouldn’t lock herself into something that doesn’t feel natural to her.

Oh dude that's a good catch, I don't remember that being emphasized or coming up in any real way in the comic. The TCGOEM in general is super underexplored, and feels more like a contrivance to keep Hades and Persephone apart more than anything else. I don't know why Persephone didn't drop out the second she got a job with Hades, resolving to go her own way and support herself. There could have been real conflict and drama between Persephone, the TGOEM, and Artemis, but it was thrown out of the window because I feel like Rachel doesn't like committing to plotlines and suffers from decision paralysis. If you already haven't talked about it I think a video of LO's foreshadowing and hyped up plots is in order. Example being Kronos was foreshadowed and hyped to be a major challenge with everyone's scars reopening. Then when he comes back he puts Ares, Hecate, and Hades under his control while most of the main pantheon is in a coma. Man, this is gonna be a challenge and give our poor persephone and be a good arc to learn how to use her powers to their full potential and save- oh wait nevermind. She eats the pomegranate, grows really big, and just beats Kronos easily. It's probably a minor thing but in my opinion, don't hype up plots that are solved as quickly as Kronos was. It just gets disappointing when they're solve in less than 10 chapters.

This is the problem with LO's writing in a nutshell - tons of failed setup and payoff. Either the setup is way too early and the plot gets dropped for 20-30 chapters so you think it's unimportant and then it whips right back to the plot with no warning - see, the rehash of the stupid nudes Thetis sent - or there's NO setup until the episode where it happens, e.g., the slap. We do plan on graphing when plots are introduced and how often they crop up episode by episode in a time-series graph...unfortunately for us we'll have to read the series from the beginning yet again to accomplish this hahaha. We'll also address the big stuff as it comes along - for example, in the next video we discuss how bungled the Act of Wrath setup was for a comically underwhelming reveal. We might also do an overall retrospective when we catch up to modern day LO...whenever that'll be lol Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!

It'd be a sacrifice she'd made to save everyone from Kronos, and then Demeter could've been relevant again in the story, trying to find a way for her daughter to be able to come back to her, but whatever her solution is, is not permanent. It would've been a good way to tie it to the original myth, but nop...

for anyone who's curious, the thing you're talking about at 53:02 with the issue of the camera flipping back and forth is called "crossing the axis" or more commonly referred to as the "180 degree rule." And yes, it's something you generally want to avoid doing in any sort of visual camera work involving people as the focus, including film, video editing, animating, and comics. Doing so can disorient the viewer when it comes to the spatial continuity of the shot, make it look like characters are facing or moving the 'wrong way', and just make movement in any one scene or scene transition feel confusing and backwards. In LO's case, it's especially frustrating when the comic does so little to establish setting and location transitioning as it is, where most of the panels are these vertically-constrained bust shots with the camera super zoomed in. The vertical format can be somewhat limiting for this, but there are creative ways to show bigger establishing shots that define the settings and commit to the 180 degree rules through the camera work, plenty of other webtoons do it all the time. Even early S1 LO had better establishing shots at one point, like the shot of Hades and Persephone driving from the Underworld into Olympus. So it's not like it wasn't capable of pulling off the establishing shots at one point, it just doesn't anymore. Paired with the constant breaking of the 180 degree rule, it makes it very disorienting to read, with every panel feeling like just portraits/bust-up shots of characters pasted onto different backgrounds that we as the audience have to just piece together through basic assumption on our own.

Thanks for coming in clutch, Uzuki! That's exactly what I was referring to, and it happens pretty much every few panels in the latest episodes of LO. It's super confusing and distracting spatially, not the least because there's so few landmarks or distinguishing features in the backgrounds now to orient the reader - it's all Void.

Demeter could've been a more sinister character if she intentionally made the flower nymphs look like Persephone to further help conceal her... which could then contribute to Persephone's identity crisis.

I’m glad you guys are talking about the number of times panels are copied. I know a major discussion starting about this time is readers started feeling the chapters were shorter, and the die hard fans would always say “no, she averages x number of panels weekly and this was x number so it’s the same” but I feel like the reason the chapters feel shorter is not because of the number of panels, but the number of copied panels with no real story happening. That combined with previous issues with the storytelling you guys had mentioned. It just sucks when 1/4 of the comic is doing nothing but waste space I know for myself personally it’s where I started getting very frustrated fast passing because it feels like not much is happening, and it’s only gotten worse as times gone on.

No you're absolutely right. The amount of filler in the later episodes is really ridiculous - and breaking it down is like digging through the Earth's crust because there's so many layers to the filler. First, there's the number of extraneous plots and dropped plots that go nowhere - which, as we mentioned in the beginning of the video, number at least 65 (there's definitely more because I realized after I made that chart that I forgot Echo...). Every time the comic spends time on a plot or detail that doesn't matter to the story or never comes up again, it wastes your time. E.g., Hades adopting a dog, the Ares & Persephone backstory, etc. etc. Second, even within the comic itself, at least 25% of the panels are recycled with little if any plot relevant dialogue. I'm not sure what purpose these panels serve, because from a pacing and storytelling standpoint they just make everything worse. And they're not funny. Third, the excessive jokes and gags. I don't really have to explain this too much, because it's very apparent that LO can't take itself seriously anymore and cuts to unfunny jokes even during an ostensibly serious moment (e.g.. Kronos). In the latest Minthe-centric episode, something like half of the panels were dedicated to unfunny jokes that wasted your time, and the actual closing of her character arc had to be rushed as a result. Fourth, the word count for some of the latest episodes is something like 200 words, and it fluctuates between 200-700 words per episode. As we mentioned in the video, conversations can take multiple episodes because of how inefficient the word to panel ratio is. And fifth, even when the word count is high, the majority of what characters are saying is repetitive and inefficient dialogue. Take the Hecate and Hades episode where they recently went into Kronos' plan. The majority of the dialogue was a recap (waste of time), and even then, the amount of useless info, jokes, and repeated statements within the same episode is mind boggling. So much so that nothing happened in that entire episode, and no new info was delivered. Apologies for the long response but the number of ways that modern and post ep 70 LO wastes your time is truly something to behold...in every way it can waffle and add filler, it does.

It’s worth highlighting that this frustration drove readers to begin paying for fast pass chapters. LO makes money not by delivering great content for which consumers are happy to pay-but by doing the opposite. It sets up stories that never deliver, teases development that never comes, and creates chapters that readers experience as flimsy and unsatisfying.

1:47:03 so I always saw it as these shades were the souls of the mortals she killed. From the looks of it she killed off an ENTIRE TOWN meaning there’s no one to do funerary rites. In order to get into the underworld you need 2 gold coins for the fare to get across the river and a cake so Cerberus doesn’t eat yoy at the gates.

First of all, I want to say thank you for this video. You have no idea how positively this one and the last one have made me feel. I have a lot of similarities to Persephones character in the sense I was homeschooled and sheltered until I hit around 16. I have an hourglass shape with wide hips and a large chest and I have since I was in my early teens. I’ve struggled a lot especially being young and dealing with extreme comfort when it comes to being sexualized by older men. I’ve tried to have conversations with people about how problematic it is for Lore Olympus to preach about the unhealthy sexualization of Persephone by older men but I’ve been hit with a lot of backlash when in reality if persephone is a self insert I feel as though Rachel should understand the negative result of glorifying unhealthy relationships especially with a 19 year old girl. I myself am 19 and have struggled with disordered eating my entire life to try to slim down my curves just to get rid of the attention from older men. I can’t even express the amount of comments I’ve gotten especially because I worked as a waitress for a few months when I was 17. It’s romantic until it happens to you catch a 50 year old man staring you up and down and suddenly you don’t feel safe walking to your car. “But it’s hades! He’s so sweet!” So are most sexual predators.. I’m alarmed more people don’t see how predatory hades relationship with Persephone is. And lore Olympus pushing the narrative that it’s romantic is disgusting. In no circumstances is a 40 year old man bringing a drunk 19 year old into his bed at all romantic. Even if they didn’t have sex. Persephones curvy appearance with her childlike personality just comes across as easily manipulative. All and all, thank you for making me feel seen. I really love these videos!

Also, they’ve steered so far from the original myths there’s no reason hades couldn’t have been young. Obviously Rachel doesn’t care about timelines so why is she actively choosing young Persephone and old hades? If hades was younger, (20-25) his chronos trauma would’ve made sense too. As well as his depression, young newly elected king of the underworld with the weight of the world on his shoulders meets sweet innocent Persephone Wouldve been such a better storyline

Dude this is the reason why LO is not just bad, it's infuriating to me. All of the messages about sexuality and what's permissible using the main couple and aimed at a YA audience, yet in some instances it has the gall to act holier-than-thou and progressive - like with Minthe's slap. I don't care if there are "some" age gap relationships that "worked out" - studies have shown that the higher the age gap, the more relationship dissatisfaction there is. On top of that, Hades is not only older, he's richer, more sophisticated, pretty much more powerful in every way. And what does he, a 45 year old man, even have in common with a 19 year old girl? The main relationship is toxic and exploitative and would be so in real life, so I HATE that it's being romanticized for young girls. That is just evil in my book. I totally know where you're coming from being made to feel uncomfortable in your own body by gross creepy men - I've been there myself and it's not a fun time. Which is why it's bizarre that this seems to be constantly portrayed as a positive in this comic, and again sinister that you'd push this narrative on young girls. I'm glad you enjoyed our video. It’s unrealistic and also extremely insensitive that persephones SA happens and literally within 10 chapters hades or another character is sexualizing her. How is nobody seeing that as an issue? Why is it okay to the LO fans to write that off as “romantic”

I never understood the whole fertility goddess plot line, and honestly, it felt strange to have this 19 year old character be a claimed fertility goddess when that title has such a heavy link with sex and pregnancy. Like up to this point, Persephone has not had a single good experience with either of those aspects. Even though it has some connection to Greek mythos, I feel like it could have been used differently. If Rachel actually wanted to focus on the creation side of fertility (which makes more sense plotwise) than she could called it being a "creation goddess" as it would fit the standards of the fertility goddess title without throwing a loaded title onto a young character. Also the idea of Perse being dubbed a fertility goddess makes me flash back to how older men always use the idea of 18-20 year old women being more fertile as an excuse to be predatory towards them (which doesn't paint a nice picture for her relationship with Hades).

Persephone is actively becoming a worse person. As the author avatar, it's pretty disturbing This is very much based on anime tropes, and then it was added to the art I don't get why Ares is in this plotline. He's another character popped in and promptly ignored. This comic is just padded I love the dissection of the art falling apart as the series goes on. Which is too bad, as it was the real strength of the comic.

That, and now there's so many logical errors and continuity problems that we end up spending at least an hour talking about just those two things! It doesn't gel well with the art style and crucially she never did it in the earlier chapters, so it looks super jarring and out of place. If you're going to do weird anime reaction faces you should probably sketch out what those look like so they look consistent at the very least.

The uwu face makes me think 2 things. 1 She's reading other webtoons that do it and not understanding the tone and overall art style of the other comics and learning HOW or why to use it Orrrr 2 she is making her comics into sharable memes to post and promote through social media and wanted a funny face to draw in new readers. I think the reason people love this webtoon was the same reason I did- the early art and the love of the mythology. AND it was the first webtoon that got me back into my teenage love of reading Manga. I quit reading because it's read best when you can binge 20 episodes at a time and once I caught up there was nothing to keep me reading week to week.

I am the writer of one of the flagship series of Webtoon France and I can somehow relate to Rachel losing passion for her project, and just trying to pump out more and more episodes without having time to reflect on it, the pressure from the audience... Yeah there's been discussion on the reddit about that from some people in the industry who claim that the NYT bestseller list doesn't really mean much anymore because it's highly manipulable supposedly. In regards to Chainsaw Man, I tried reading that too and while I enjoyed the first 10-20 chapters, I have my gripes about that manga as well. Don't get me wrong, compared to LO it's 1,000,000X better (especially the art, hot damn) but I think Chainsaw Man has some missed opportunities as well. Might be another series we'll tackle if there's interest! Thanks for the comment!!

Honestly the Ares flashback felt like a part of his introduction. A trend with side characters is that they have to have had a connection to either Hades or Persephone in the past. It felt like a “here’s a new character, this is how he’s connected to the main character, which the entire story obviously revolves around entirely.” It’s annoying Ares HAD to have that past connection to Persephone when it was never necessary and never important. Waste of a chapter, tbh.

The idea that the bar sign actually said "You're Shit" and everyone somehow knows what happened is kinda uncomfortable. Considering Hades reaction to Hera, someone he's close to, knowing. I don't think he'd be all that comfortable with the public knowing.

Yeah and if that's the case, who spread the word? The only people in that scene were Minthe, Hades, and Hecate. We know Minthe and Hades didn't tell anyone, so did Hecate gossip about it...? Thanks, man! Yeah, we read/watch a lot of bad series as a hobby just purely to rewrite them to salvage a promising start. Stuff like LOST, the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, LO, Naruto, etc have such promising beginnings but always lose the plot halfway through so it's interesting to think about what could have been and what went wrong. Rachel just looked at the definition of "Discovery Writer" and absolutely misunderstood it. Discovery writers let their characters run wild, but they still have to worldbuild before so the characters have ground under their feet. Not deciding what Persephone can and can't do is like making a planet and forgetting to give it laws of physics and then be like look they can fly how magical XD

It’s kind of annoying that Hecate is just coded as queer? Why isn’t there any point where she mentions she’s ace or smth. Is the series really that obsessed with the Hades/Persephone romance that a woman being ace is completely unimportant to it

Not only Hecate, but Eros is pretty clearly coded as Persephone's Gay Best Friend too, a harmful trope that basically treats gay men as accessories. And Eros is likewise only *coded* as gay - his major plotline involves a hetero romance with Psyche! Pretty much every character apart from Hades and Persephone (well, even Persephone) is a cardboard cutout with no life or interests except revolving around the OTP. You can't really expect to see anything more out of them than that. So every time an interesting character comes along with potential like Minthe, Thanatos, Hecate, Demeter, etc...just prepare to be disappointed haha. Thanks for the comment!

It’s disappointing how Lore Olympus seems like it’s trying to make a whole world of gods but simultaneously refuses to flesh out any of those characters, or even find anything reasonable to motivate them. They’re like 2-dimensional painted backdrops for Hades’ and Persephone’s all-consuming OTP-ness.

I think Athena is Canon Lesbian in LO, and we know her girlfriend is Hestia. But in 220 episodes, I think we say Athena about 4 times, and them together like, twice.

Also, the fact that all the women in LO after a while have the same body type. Minthe went from having a thinner stylized body type to being really busty and curvy.

Yeah there's a way to do this and make it look dynamic yet consistent i.e. Eris in the Sinbad animated movie, but this just comes off as too many people drawing the same characters with NO reference as to how they're supposed to look. Same goes for their changing faces. In a sequence of 3-4 panels you'll have Persephone/Hades looking completely different in each, including their colors!!

I'd be really interested in a review like this for Midnight Poppy Land. Because MPL is like CRAZY popular too. And I really enjoyed reading it at the beginning, but it took such a DRASTIC turn for the worse. And I feel like I'm going crazy, because nobody seems to talk about it much? XD I think it's even worse than with Lore Olympus, tbh. It got ridiculously (!!!!) HILARIOUSLY (!!!!) bad.

Honestly when I read the first season I kinda liked it,I dropped because I started disliking it and I couldn't find why.Your videos made me realise why I checked some of the newer episodes and I can definitely see the drop in the quality lol.Now that I look at it,LO seems like a fanfic that could be good but instead decided to drop the ball and do questionable things, Persephone is such a weird character that even when I liked the comic I couldn't find myself to like her?I am not against the idea of a P + H retelling but heck make it actually good instead of creepy and weird?As a Greek myself I am kinda disappointed

Yep it reminds me a lot of fanfic and it's so weird how it essentially became fanfic of itself at some point. Persephone is so strangely written in such a distant and contrary way that she comes off as Matt Damon's character in The Talented Mr. Ripley: a social chameleon who excels at manipulation but who is empty at her core. It's very unsettling especially for the POV character and especially because this is probably unintentional that she comes off this way! Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!

I heard that the butterflys re her reaction with what happened with Apollo. Or her fear in General. Because of the line later "a kiss can just be a kiss" But watching your video, i don't think it was set up.

The butterflies were never previously seen as far as I can remember, only the foliage popping up and the flower crowns, etc. I'm not sure what it's supposed to represent - even in the aftermath it's not really clear *why* she turned into butterflies. If it was residual trauma from Apollo, I think that warranted a lot more screen time/clarity, because as it is the mental fallout from that EXTREMELY SERIOUS action gets less spotlighting in the story than Hades' trauma. Her reaction to it is even less severe than Minthe's reaction to slapping Hades...

Tin Foil Hat Time: Persephone is turning from the kind of innocent uwu girl the author liked to fetishize into a relationship with older men, to a bratty woman who would enable that kind of relationship. This is a spur of the moment thought don't get me wrong, but it feels like Persephone's manipulative behavior isn't supposed to be a bug, its a feature. Its almost... Its almost as though the power fantasy here is of a young woman getting her worst attributes worsened as she's corrupted by a relationship with an older man who takes hold of her life but its fine since she enjoys the corruption.

Jesus it this series... I skipped a bit forward and when the whole "I heard what you did Minthy" came up and she feels like shit I though I had missed something because the way that it's framed I fucking thought that Minthy had faked a pregnancy or something because whatever she did is framed like she permanently traumatised or killed someone. But it was just the fallout of what happened with her slapping Hades. Just wow. The way everyone treats her is so out of proportion to what is actually going on. Hades is so much more powerful than her in every sense and her actions are framed like she strangled a puppy in front of everyone out of blind rage. This series is so weird....

Yup, and strangely enough, Minthe's inner monologue at the gym (where Daphne was leading a class) was one of the strongest chapters, even though we're meant to hate her as a character. Minthe is a more interesting character than both Hades and Persephone (as much as I love their romance, it's true, imo).

honestly counting how many time passed while this or that event happened its extremely hard so i am impressed of your memories yesterday i was writhing a webtoon episode thought that i reached October 31 halloween i felt very excited but than when i counted it again happened i was writing halloween episode on October 2 😂😂😂😂

It's tricky dude, that's why we recommend keeping track of this stuff in an excel or something. You can put your chapter summaries in one cell and the date in the other for example.

i mean. i have issue with that every panel in my comic sort of different since i draw on tablet :P and i have troubles with multiply and overlay but even ahe draws on tablet her colors are not even that hard so- what the hell 🥲 someone forgot how to save color platete? its even easyer on procreate

It's impossible to make every panel look the exact same - we have this issue too. She also had the same issue in the earlier part of LO. But it was never THIS bad, where you can tell a different person drew each panel. To improve consistency, a character design sheet and palette reference is essential and pretty easy to do - she could have just clipped some panels from early LO as a reference, for example. What pyrrhic and I do sometimes is compile a bunch of panels of the characters' faces from different angles that we've already drawn so we can compare the proportions to future panels. I wouldn't trace, because that can look stiff, but a simple overlay showing where the eyes are in relation to the nose and how big they are, etc., is really useful as a guide for consistency.

I think you guys might be slightly too deep in 🤣 which fair you have suffered so much reading through but have you really never heard people refer to a day being special for it being their birthday? it's a pretty common thing I've seen both in my personal life and in fiction. And yes the actual day is technically not special because it's not a holiday or something but technically no day is actually special 😅 it's all just subjective point of views.

Yeah fair, this could be nitpicky. It's just that the world already revolves around Persephone so Hermes acting like Hades should know what day it is because it's *special* nevermind that Hades and Persephone aren't together and Hermes has no reason to think Hades should know rubbed us the wrong way. I guess it's not that the day itself is special, more so why is Hermes making a big deal to Hades if that makes sense. Thanks for commenting!
