In the 1990's, the video game world was dominated by Nintendo and Sega, which resulted in fierce competition that forced both companies to continuously innovate, but Sega struck first with the introduction of the Sega CD. Without the technology to compete, Nintendo enlisted Sony to develop a CD-ROM add on for the SNES. To do this, Sony brought on Ken Kutaragi, a brash but brilliant engineer to make it happen.
Nintendo then realized the contract would grant Sony the rights to every game written on the SNES CD-ROM format and decided to drop Sony without warning. In 1991, Sony announced the SNES-compatible PlayStation at CES, but the very next day, Nintendo revealed its secret partnership with Philips. Spurred on by his Samurai principles and the sting of betrayal, the head of Sony ordered Kutaragi to create their own video game console, and in 1993, Sony announced the PSX.
But with zero credibility in the industry, Sony and the PSX was predicted to fail. Developers were apprehensive because 3D gaming was so high-concept at the time, but the release of Virtua Fighter opened the eyes of publishers and Sony went on to sign 250 developers in Japan alone. The PSX sold a million units in its first few months in Japan, but winning the West would be more challenging. Sony spent a rumored $4 million on its E3 booth in 1995 and it paid off - the demand was staggering and the PlayStation won the console war handily. So, in that single moment of deception, Nintendo had created a juggernaut that not only outsold its own console 3-to-1, but pave the way for repeat performances by the PS2, PS3, and now, the PS4.

lol once they go bankrupt in the next few years ther gunna be just like sega.. start pimping mario to PS consoles the wii U is a complete failure selling what less than the dreamcast? they got the 3ds but they cant lean on solely to make bucks and exclusives wont matter since they keep popping out the same crap so yea not only did they make ther own enemy but just like sega ther gunna have to fork over ther mascot and franchises to them just to stay in the biz

Ice2441 not as much as you think take everything into consideration and look at the history console costs how much sold first party sales of games etc then take into consideration the development of their more current systems... the ds line and 3ds now is whats paying off and in the long run this may be what keeps them afloat till they decide to get out of console hardware at least.. in other words theyre basically losing money producing and selling the wiiU bcz one its not selling very well and 2 devs are officially stating they want nothing to do with it... bethesda, ea and more... come on now thats sad... not to mention retailers dont want to sell them theyre sending back stock devs are sending back the devkits and whatnot.. they will die soon enough its inevitable the only problem is theryre doing well with the ds which will prolong ther demise...

Hearing just those two start up tracks for the ps1 and 2 brought back sooo many memories....of foolishly thinking if the game didn't work wiping the disc on my t-shirt and constantly blowing into the disc compartment would make it work....good times

PlayStation rewrote the book on what consoles were capable of, consoles were seen as a toy and a gimmick while PlayStation showed that console gaming could encompass casual and hardcore alike by being open to both child-friendly games like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro but also dark, gritty games like MGS and resident evil. Still not as good as PC gaming but...

***** The PS3 may have been a fail in comparison to the PS2 in terms of sales, but at the end of the day, it was the superior system. Free online was great, games that came later in the cycle worked better, and better graphics from the get go. It's a far better system, but Microsoft spent more money making sure they seemed to be the better system. Early DLC for CoD, Oblivion was an exclusive for a bit, Halo and Gears as exclusives, and that's pretty much it. You completely overlook Naughty Dog for PS3 exclusives, and that's a real shame because ND pushed out some of the best story telling in gaming, and in one case, I'd say all mediums of entertainment. The system wasn't utilized to it's full capacity because devs had to lower their standards to the 360's specs. It wasn't the PS3 that failed this generation (it can still hold up quite well), it was Microsoft trying to make the PS3 look bad and then their system holding back development. P.S. I own and enjoy using a 360. I think it's a good system and it had some great games on it, but it was released to soon while the Xbox was still a great system. The extra year Sony took shows in the PS3's ability.

haha thats the big issue, sony isnt just a console maker they were at one time a leading electronics produces, like the walkman and their tvs, i can go on and on, but that area isn't doing nearly as well as the console market, their current credit is at "junk status" for being weak and volitile

here this is what i found "According to the researchers, the PS4 bill of materials costs $372, and with manufacturing costs added the total cost comes to $381. If this is correct, it means that Sony is making a profit of $18 on every PS4 console it sells, based on the $399 retail price."

I went to SEGA with a 3D fighter prototype while Virtua Racing was fresh in arcades. They turned me away and said "3D Fighting? The technology needed for that is too advanced, and besides, you're too young. We are focusing on SEGA Genesis now." To be honest, my 3D Fighter concept I showed SEGA played just like Smash Bros. So, don't expect what you think or say to game developers really matters. Just go do your own thing. The more you know. I'm an indie developer now, and yes I will listen and care what you think and have to say.

hey, nintendo wants to make money off of their games. so it makes sense to ditch sony when nintendo was the established company at the time. honestly, nintendo should have went to sony and said "no. we want licencing rights too".

It was perfectly viable, with sony delivering the technology and nintendo delivering the characters (licensed respectively) it would have set an unchallengeable combination between the two. Dropping the contract with sony was pretty underhanded as what they did was perfectly moral and legal. Which is why in the end fast facts clearly called it a betrayal. They couldn't request or demand licensing rights on hardware they straightly could not develop themselves. Thus how the knife they meant for sonys back (mind you who already poured huge resources into the tech for nintendo systems) landed into their own backs.

Ownya twice I still disagree. Nintendo was the established video game company. And Sony wasn't even close to the area. As far as I know the CD drive and the processor that handles sound would have been Sony's major contributions. Now when Sony had "hey, we are taking over all of your hardware profits", Nintendo said GTFO. Nintendo did amazing with the NES and SNES, and the N64 had high hopes The problem wasn't that nintendo turned down Sony. That's perfectly understandable. Yamauchi actually ordered for the N74 to be hard to program for. He thought that bad 3rd party devs wouldn't make games on the console, but it turned out to make all of the games poor quality. Then when the Gamecube came, he said it is only for one thing, gaming. and launched it at $150 I think. Doesn't that sound familiar? Oh ya Sony just did the same thing with the ps3. They made it expensive and hard to program for. Now with the ps4 they are like "we are for the gamer and it's easy to program for" That cost them a lot of ps2 fans and devs that went to the 360. Of course they went back because of rrod

Dead .Soldier What does any of that have to do with anything? How could that argument hold "Oh hey, we want you to do all the work, but have non of the protective rights over your works." Nintendo still held character rights and thus any characters ran on their console if in Sonys owned hardware would still rest in their control. Sony would possess hardware and programming rights which they themselves made. Nintendo allowing Sony contractually to pour their resources into an item they no longer intended on using was purely underhanded. As the lore shows the hardware development and research created huge strides in the industry that not only nintendo could have been a part of but profited hugely by keeping to their contracts. They pulled something underhanded and have lost HUGE incomes because of it, still showing to this day.

I just love the PSN community in this lore has no butthurt ppl for what ive seen in the top comments having to defend their system because they automatically feel defensive about it. If you felt that your system is the best you wouldn't have to defend it but feel safe in its quality, it really proves which systems fans feel better about their system

hippybullshit im not complimenting them on their system im complimenting them on the obvious satisfaction we obviously show about our system over the xbox fanboys. no butthurt ppl are here screaming in the comments on how their system is better even though none atked their system and their comment was not in reply to an atk. i posted this same comment on the xbox lore one after seeing all these self induced rants just cause its showed that they didn't have faith in their own system by their need to needlessly defend it even though their *relatively* among supporters.

Creating your worst enemy is definetly the biggest mistake a company can make, the PS3 might not have been the best selling console of its generation, but the PS1 and PS2 dominated the market and if things keep going like they started in this new generation the PS4 might just do the same.

The PSX is NOT the Playstation 1. The PSX is actually a variant of the PlayStation 2, exclusive to Japan, and was designed to essentially be an early version of the XboxOne, with its own hard drive and TV cable box capability. Gamester81 has an excellent video about the actual PSX.

Don't forget that the original PS and PS2 were fairly open to hardware modding so you could play Japanese region games on an American region system. Even with that, though, I think the backwards-compatability of the PS2 was what made that console king of its day.

Dammit Dodger... >_< The PSX wasn't the first Playstation system... The PSX was an entirely separate PS2 console that was also a digital video recorder and it wasn't released until 2003... The first Sony video game system was simply called the PlayStation!

I miss the ps1... The sounds it made and it's simple start up. Now of days everything has to move or be animated in one way or the other. Not saying new consoles are bad but I just miss Simplicity. I will forever have a nerdgasm when I plugin my old PS1 And heck even the PS2

Pipboy3004 For one no. The way I describe "Nerdgasm" is either a huge nostalgia event that feels equal or better than... well you know. This could also go for comic books you been looking for ect. ect. The reason I claim to have such a amazing feeling is because I was around 10 when I got a playstation 1 and I would play it everyday. I went from Sega genises to PS1 which was a huge jump. And so being the age I am now remembering the intro to the system brings me great joy and a almost cringe worthy happiness.

Two words made me buy playstation in 95'. Twisted Metal. It was rock and roll racing with no tracks and from then on weapon based car combat has never been the same. Also I rember espn xtreme, jumping flash, wipeout, battlr arena toshinden, air/ace combat, ridge racer, crash bandicoot, and a little game called final fantasy 7.

THX was hell the the movie theater when I was a kid. Man why would you compare that to the PSX start up? "silence your cell phones and pagers so we can blast a fucking THX start up for about 45 seconds before the movie,"
