Your lecture format of presentation is a breath of fresh air in the youtube explainer-video space. I find that in formats where the author is reading from a script, I retain very little of what was said. In contrast, I remember everything you've shared and feel I could even explain it to someone else!
another point for why we sailed to the far east before the new world is that it's a lot easier to sail along coastlines, where you have a constant geographic point of reference and places where you can stop to resupply or do repairs, then sailing the high seas where you're completely isolated and have to navigate by stars which fun fact, you can't see when there's a storm, which are far more common in the high seas than along coastlines
Precisely! Additionally, knowing as we do that sea travel in the world of FFXIV is roughly equivalent to that of our 16th century at the latest, you have to account for sea currents and weather patterns, so “close” is relative. It’s not necessarily a straight shot across the ocean, nor a predictable travel time. How many explorers in our history kind of knew where they were going, but ended up somewhere else entirely, and a long time later than they originally planned? It’s not exactly luxury travel. It’s a gamble.

To belabor this point, if I remember my history correct, Europeans sailed around Africa to get to Asia by coastline hopping long before Columbus dared to sail westward over the open sea. In fact, his stated reason to sail west was to try and find a shorter route to Asia than the current existing methods.
I imagine the Walaquee are in a separate section/nation than Tural. If only because the first person we learn of them and their practices from is Martin, and I'll eat his hat before believing he's 80. That said, I imagine we'll not be getting to the Walaquee this expansion beyond the blue mage quests.
people whould probably complain like with fall guys, but i think a nadaam equivalent for the walaquee as a blu battle royal could be fun. picking up spell totems from random map drops and non renewable spell charges/pomanders acting as ammo limit.
So I finished the MSQ of Dawntrail the other day, mild spoilers for some of the first half of the MSQ. I'm the type to go in and experience it at my own pace, then watch lore deep dive videos and such wile grinding. One of my favorite parts of it was learning about all the people who live there and how they do things, as well as the local history and various cultural practices, and how we kind of become somewhat of a mentor too new best girl.
As a fan of Blue Mage, im hoping to see if we come across the Wahlaqee and learn more deeply about the origins of what we come to learn about blue magic.
Hello! Watching this video a couple months after DT release, and just want to say thanks for making the connection for me in regards to the blue mage quest line! While I didn't "love" the MSQ, I HIGHLY enjoyed the fishing questline, and it all makes sense now! Thank you so much for that valuable backstory on who they were and how we've met people of that culture already in Ul'dah!
If the Indigo Deep is anything like the North Atlantic ocean, yeah I can see why people might think the ocean was alive or magically charged. I would get a kick though if we find Viking ruins in the north to really mirror how they found the continent before the rest of Europe. A fantastic summary of what we know so far.
Like all map drawings (in the real world) ... They are never to scale. Unless someone on the FFXIV world had a satellite image of the world, the artist of this map wouldn't have a proper scale. To see the real scale of the land mass, go to the moon and watch as the planet turns. The new world 100% is larger.
I do wanna discuss the possibility that you may be unintentionally taking the dimensions seen in the newest map too literally. It's got a lot of visual similarities to real world pen and paper maps that were drawn by merely sketching the coastline as best as one could, a strong example of the errors that can arise from this is the Orontius Finaeus map. Compound that further with the lack of clear markings to clarify any distortions from adapting a spherical object to a 2D plane (like we see with modern maps today), then I find it hard to take the dimensions at face value. I think it would be closer to the art team's vision to take even this new map, comissioned by Krile, with a grain of salt for its dimensions. With setting appropriate reasons for its inaccuracy, such as having no landmarks to gauge distance travelled other than "It took us a LONG time to get there." We might see more "setting accurate" maps if the Loporrits or other institutions start mapping Etherys from sites such as Mare Lamentorum, wherein they can more comfortably account for the star's curvature.
I simply used the map because it was shiny and new. We can see from the moon in space that Tural's dimensions still aren't one to one with the original concept years ago. Am I not allowed to have fun with my new imagines? lmao
I want ti learn about religion, lore, and Primals of the new world, so i can then kill those primals and add their mechanical and Aetherological distinctiveness to my own. We are the summoner, you will adapt to service us.
Tural being smaller is actually an actual thing with maps! Things on world maps are actually quite often bigger and smaller than they actually should be, for a number of reasons. 1) Our planet is round, but maps are flat so some definitely is going to be lost, resulting in the equators of maps to be stretched and the poles to be shortened. 2) Most maps are made for Western countries and so, as a result, Europe and North America are often enlarged and inflated in size while places like Africa are shrunk down so it could easily be that Tural is, in fact, much, much bigger than it seems on the map. Hell, they could even be talking about both Turals as one continents which would explain the size thing, too.
The new world is 2 continents, just like North America and South America are two continents. There's a big divide right through the middle. South america is wrong about it being one continent.
I love your mindset on the retcons in 14 being that sometimes the devs want to move in a different direction, and that's okay! Personally, it reminds me of the real world historians and scientists. As we are furthering our understanding of the world, things that we used to believe as facts has evidence to the contrary revealed. These things are never exact sciences, since we are working with the current knowledge base available.
Of course! This lore has been sitting around unused for so long that I'd be shocked if it came back 1 to 1. Though it does make me curious as to what all we'll learn now!
One thing about the map is I would think the map just isn't 100% accurate or drawn to scale. Even our Rectacular world map atm vastly undersizes Africa and oversizes things like Greenland and Europe
I'm curious to see if a certain absent beastmaster from the Bozjan Front exploratory zones/questlines/lore will show up when they introduce the limited job to the game.
As far as the size of the continent issue, you can see that part of the landmass is still shrouded in the bottom left corner of the map. We will likely get more areas unlocked later in the expansion which will add to the size of the land mass over all.
Feel it should be said maps are not always the best indicator of size or distance. Europe for example looks small but it's massive same can be said for North America. A map is more a glossary of where something is versus it's actual real size.
Well we can also see it from the moon and it's still not exactly what was explained all those years ago. They're not lore breakings changes, but changes worth noting. haha

I made a FFXIVxD&D campaign a few years back. It was set in The New World 40 years prior to the events of ARR. I had only two players so I had Matoya and Louisoix as NPCs to assist in combat a little. (Matoya wsa a moody brat and Louisoix was a proud father gushing about his newborn son Fourchenault.) I had four major areas it was set in: The city of the blue mages on the east coast and it was heavily inspired by Santorini. There were some Moblins who were summoning a primal. There was also a sprawling encampment in the southern desert-like area where an Alligan ship crashed ages ago and scholars and machinists were studying and salvaging. Very wild west inspired. There the players would face failed clones of Amon. Then there was the large city of Mamool Ja to the north where they summoned, you guessed it, a primal to defeat. And finally in the east coast I transplanted Insomnia from FFXV, made it smaller, and added a dash of Midgar. There the final Primal Jenova would be ushered in by Emet-Selch and he would monologue how this was all a test run anyways and he doesn't care if we destroy his toys and ports out for them to fight the biggest primal yet. Anyways we never did finish the campaign, but it was so fun speculating on what the New World would be like. I am so hyped for Dawntrail!
Super fast ff lore breakdown: once some guys who are the Greek gods lived on not Olympus. Not Hermes but actually Hermes got depressed, shenanigans ensued, planet got broken harder than medieval China dynasty’s. Que beginning of game, aeons have past, the not Olympians are trying to reform the world, via genocide, you are trying to stop them, via genocide. Everyone is depressed. Then you win, and they’re still depressed, but dead.

Well, as usual, I'm looking forward to how FFXIV can take real world concepts and issues and make them engaging and understandable. There was some controversy over the Whelaquee, and I do expect some concept of Colonialization to be tackled in the expansion because of that (and our interference in their politics). However, RL, it's been skewed as being very negative and wholly detrimental with no acknowledgement of the positives or benefits. Honestly? Cultural appreciation can only happen when cultures share and learn of each other. There will always be greed and fortune seekers, but that's why it's important to step up and do what we can. I certainly can't imagine Italian food without garlic and tomatoes, so let's see what the inspiration from the real world brings to the table as they cloak it in a fantasy skin. ^-^
Given that Tural looks somewhat Americas shaped, The nastiness of the Indigo Deep is fitting. The Atlantic at least has never been known to be a kind ocean.

Part of me wonders if maybe the size of tural and the three great continents is more equal when you consider their locations on a globe. Perhaps othard and illsbard on a flat map appear larger than they actually. The reality probably is that the lore was written, and then the map, and it could be an exaggeration on the explorers part.
I hope that with the next Blue Mage update we take our homeboy Martin to the new world and find the Walaquee tribe he studied from. Even if it's a secluded instance from the rest of the Tural map.
I really can't wait for the Inevitable BLU 90 update in 7.x so we can find out how much of an absolute charlatan Martin actually is and start learning some *REAL* Blue Magic. ;)
@@SynodicScribe it's also completely possible the people mapping it, being from the "old world" exaggerated its size because they just weren't thorough/it was a whole "New World." I think the size of the landmass is decently consistent with what we've seen from the moon
Ye'll not be seeing me in Dawntrail any time soon as I've nae even started Heavensward yet. 48 hour maintenance doesn't help, but even if that wasn't a thing, the fact is I didn't want to refight Ifrit, Garuda, and Titan on harder difficulties and it turns out I only had to refight Ifrit and just unlock the difficulties for Garuda and Titan, so I dragged my feet on that one for nothing and delayed further by fighting Garuda and Titan on that higher difficulty anyway for no reason, and then, after doing my MSQs to a specific point, the game tells me I need to complete the Crystal Tower storyline, and I did not want to run the Labyrinth of the Ancients as a tank as my main job is Warrior and so tried to level Archer and Bard to 50 for it, but gear wasn't keeping up with my leveling, so I switched to Samurai to stop putting it off. And now I need to run Syrcus Tower, which is allegedly easier than Labyrinth of the Ancients, but I am still dreading the moment. And then there were all the non-maintenance days I just didn't want to play.
I suspect Gulool Ja Ja, probably had all of Tural unified, but it wasnt until around the time Ketenramm reach Tural and met Gulool Ja Ja, that the nation was officially funded, probably inspired by some of tales of Ketanramm, their official language is a new one, similar/inspired to the one used commonly on the three great continents, making me think...how did they understood Katenramm, specially befriending Gulool Ja Ja? Did either Ketenramm or Gulool Ja Ja had the echo?
I'm really curious as to what kind of leader Galool jaja is, because with such a long reign at this point he must be mythical in a way. Surely there must be people in Tural who have been born and died with him being at the wheel the whole time. If he had all this time to prove his worth as a ruler surely his plans for chosing a heir must go much deeper than the contest. If he wants someone to rule for as long as possible then a contest is one of the worst ways to go about it because there are many variables going in that won't factor much in how good they'll do as a dawn servant. You don't just end the job of your life and just hand the keys to the guy who happens to know the right guy to win the trials.
I'm hyped. I work nights, so I sleep when I get home. By the time I wake up tomorrow, the expansion will be live. And I'll be pigging out on homemade banana pudding because it's my cheat day. As for what I'm most excited about... Well, this time around I regret to say it's not the classes. I literally could not care less about viper or pictomancer. I do appreciate the reference to Relm, though. Beastmasters is another story though. I'm itching to hear more about it. I've recently gotten into Blue mage and enjoy the non-standard play style, but the whole style of the class they went for isn't really doing it for me, but beastmaster sounds like more my cup of tea. Other than that... I guess just learning more lore, and seeing the new story through. I won't be stressing or hurrying to do anything. I just play how I feel like playing. So I envision myself still parked in the old world somewhere trying to find someone to roleplay with. Anyway, this was a helpful video. Appreciated.
Haven't finished the video yet, but I have a question! Is the old name for Tural (Mamook) just soft-retconned away or is it an explained name change such as the old name for the Dawnservant being the Autarch?
Maps often do not represent the correct size of land masses. Some are far bigger than maps let on so it might the size of all three continents but did not transition from globe to flat map well. Same with the distance, might not be properly represented on the map
I assume Tural being not too far is like how, in a vast majority of illustrations the Moon is always drawn to be way closer to Earth than it actually is, if it was drawn with the factual distance it wouldn't comfortably fit into the picture (especially gameplay vise).
It's not exactly as explained as we see it from the moon either though. They're not lore ruining differences, but as a lore channel I do have to make these distinctions.
