The Mark Twain Prize recognizes people who have had an impact on American society in ways similar to the distinguished 19th century novelist and essayist best known as Mark Twain. As a social commentator, satirist and creator of memorable characters, Samuel Clemens was a fearless observer of society, who startled and outraged many while delighting and informing many more with his uncompromising perspective of social injustice and personal folly. He revealed the great truth of humor when he said "against the assault of laughter nothing can stand."
For more information on the Mark Twain Prize, please visit: www.kennedy-ce...
The inaugural Mark Twain Prize was presented to Richard Pryor during the first annual Kennedy Center Celebration of American Humor, October 20, 1998. The event was created by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Bob Kaminsky, Peter Kaminsky, Mark Krantz, and John Schreiber and is televised annually. The Kennedy Center is grateful to Cappy McGarr for his steadfast support of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor since its inception. Previous recipients of the Mark Twain include Richard Pryor (1998), Jonathan Winters (1999), Carl Reiner (2000), Whoopi Goldberg (2001), Bob Newhart (2002), Lily Tomlin (2003), Lorne Michaels (2004), Steve Martin (2005), Neil Simon (2006), Billy Crystal (2007), George Carlin (2008), Bill Cosby (2009, rescinded in 2018) Tina Fey (2010), Will Ferrell (2011), Ellen DeGeneres (2012), Carol Burnett (2013) Jay Leno (2014), Eddie Murphy (2015), Bill Murray (2016), David Letterman (2017), and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (2018).

You can hear in his voice what Mike Myers took to create Dr Evil's voice.
@Francophone974
@Francophone974 4 года назад
He allegedly ripped off Dana Carvey's impression of Lorne to create it - hence a long beef after that. (Dana Carvey's words, but Myers never denied it). Apparently both are ok with it today.

@@BimTalch That was, in my opinion the best monologue of that time. What does it take to make a person diabolically nuts? I actually turned that clip in for a sociology class assignment on family issues in TV and movies, but failed because it wasn't "real" or didn't represent something "real". How ironic. But I digress. Dr. Evil is the best crappy villain.

@@Francophone974 I will now prove Carvey's lying. In his 1994 stand up special "Critic's Choice" at the link in my comment, three years before AUSTIN POWERS, Carvey does a Lorne at the 25:17 mark that doesn't sound like Lorne or Dr. Evil. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nwaZDJKKkFE.html

This guy isn't just a TV producer, this man is a LEGEND !!! Very deserved honor, he created the greatest comedy program concept in TV history, a format design to go on forever, the launchpad for the careers of so many 1-derful talented artists. Thank You Mr Lorne Michaels, God bless you !!!

There should be another award named after him. Lorne Michaels has been the absolute #1 greatest contributor to comedy in the history of mankind. If you watched all of the funniest SNL sketches and all the movies of all the former SNL cast members, you would probably die from complications of sitting that long but it would be enjoyable at the same time.

Without Lorne, many talented comedians wouldn’t have gotten their start. Those comedians include: Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Amy Pohler, Jimmy Fallon, Seth Myers, Eddie Murphy, Chris Farley, Adam Sandler, and Kristen Wiig. and that’s just a a small portion of them.
