At the breeding station of the Loro Parque Fundación, we visited four different species. The Foundation is famous all over the world for the biodiversity of the population and we have looked at very different species. The thick-billed parrot (Rhynchopsitta pachyrhyncha), the yellow-tailed black cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus funereus), the Pesquet's parrot (Psittrichas fulgidus), and the red-and-green macaw (Ara chloroptera). We talked to the curator Márcia Weinzettl about the husbandry of the species.
Of course, there are many other things to discover there, and, of course, we have more species in the video, but our focus is on these 4 special species. Some species are pretty popular, other species are pretty unknown.
First, we visit the two breeding pairs of the thick-billed parrot in the breeding station. This species is threatened - the IUCN lists it as EN. Today, the species is found in nature predominantly in Mexico, but formerly extended its range to the southwest of the United States, where it is no longer present today except for a probable dying population.
The two young yellow-tailed black cockatoos in the video are also very special because they are not only born at Loro Parque Fundación, but we also see both forms of the yellow-tailed black cockatoos. Once the nominate form (Calyptorhynchus funereus funereus) and once a subspecies of the same Tasmanian yellow-tailed black cockatoos (Calyptorhynchus funereus xanthanotus).
For many, the distinction is hard at first look, but the nominate has a longer tail. In the Tasmanian form, the yellow margins of the body feathers of male animals are more pronounced. So you have to look closely to see the difference.
Pesquet's parrots are sometimes considered by some to be birds of prey - because of the head shape. In fact, they are also parrots, but they are threatened and listed by the IUCN as VU. The destruction of natural habitats and hunting are currently among their biggest problems. In zoos, they are rarely exhibited.
Quite a lot more often you will find the red-and-green macaw in zoological facilities. It is also called green-winged macaw and is the second largest parrot of the world. Globally, the species is not threatened, however, the Argentine population is about to eradicate. Species conservationists are currently fighting with reintroductions for their survival.
The Loro Parque Fundación has the largest parrot collection in the world. The successful parrot breeding is an important pillar for the conservation of the population of which also parts are to be seen at Loro Parque.
Some species are directly linked to projects that include, for example, reintroductions. Other species are wisely kept to have an already functioning population when they are in need. Thanks to the work of the Loro Parque Foundation, nine species have already been saved:

Visiting the breeding station is something very special. A guided visit to the breeding station is reserved for the members of the foundation. As part of our work, we were also able to visit the breeding station before:
