I watched this today, this morning, on May 21st, 2020 in the 8 o'clock hour. I was moved beyond expectation by her intellect, her eloquence, and her brilliance as a writer. There were several moments in this documentary where something she said or sentiments conveyed through her characters, resonated with me personally and sat with my spirit. 35 minutes is short for a documentary, but it was just enough time to capture my interest in Lorraine Hansberry as a writer and has provoked me to research her other works (in addition to A Raisin in the Sun). I will watch this again as both inspiration and revelation were extracted from this viewing. Happy Belated Birthday and Rest In Peace Lorraine Hansberry.
Oh Lorraine Hanserry was a wonderful writer indeed and achieved so much only to be gone so soon. She was most inspired by Sean O'Casey and Ireland and we salute her from Dublin! We returned the compliment with our Wonderland Theatre Playwright's Bookclub this week. I particularly appreciated her incisive talk on realism and a playwright's craft in choosing 'why now' which she knew exceptionally well. She also wrote for the emerging 'Method actor' and threw down the gauntlet to actors. There are amazing productions of her work on RU-vid too which is just amazing. They are actors' gold.
Thank you for the upload, and a BIGGER thank you to Lorraine Hansberry for being black, gifted, and beautiful, as well as being humane (very important, here). She left the world all too soon.
Whats crazy is that someone in my class is related to her. Lorraine Hansberry is my classmates great great aunt. If you wanna know her name, her name is Kaira Hansberry.
Curiosity got the best of me while watching a late-night talk show, where the host mentioned Ms. Lorraine Hansberry's Broadway play, "The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window," opening this February 4. My first thought was to google and find out about this play...and then I wanted to remind myself of what an important and profound person Lorraine Hansberry, has been to me. Watching this video was moving, heartwarming and heartbreaking because of her short, yet powerful life. She was beautiful, smart, talented and a dynamic "writer/artist!!" I hope school students get to hear & learn about Ms. Hansberry like I did in school. Thank you for sharing this part of history, because Black history IS educational and valuable to ALL. (1/2023)
I'm so glad that a friend shared the link to the National Theatre's production of Lorraine Hansberry's Les Blancs, which was brilliant, and led me to watch A Raisin in the Sun (the production with Danny Glover) on RU-vid. Wonderful. The internet at its finest!
This is a treasure. A historical video with live action of Lorraine Hansberry. I've never heard her voice before. She sounds just as I imagined. Ms. Claudia McNeil, the actress who portrayed the older mother, is the narrator.
"It's time to make new sounds......I am glad I was here to make one." This statement brings tears to your eyes when you think of what she contributed and what she left on the table by her tragically premature death.
I love Lorraine Hansberry thank you so much for your talent your creativity, your pure heart and your activism. You are truly a leader and a legend and your life and your story will live on forever. I am going to help carry your legacy. Thank you so much. let’s continue to keep the real stories alive for our people. We need to know the truth. There’s so much hidden from our people and it’s time to bring it up and bring it out. Exposed the truth don’t let them erase our history. Don’t let them take the books out of the school system, everyone needs to know the truth about what happened to the Black people in the 1960s and beyond💜✨🙏🏽👑
The hate Lorraine Hansberry had to endure in her short 34 years. But inspite of the evil and hate . This woman accomplished more than most people. Her family was hated by pink people and her ancestors American Descendants of Slavery suffered gravely. She overcame this hate that white or pink people are born with and overcame their hatred of her family and ancestors to write a good play. Well Done.
Robert Nemiroff was my mom's uncle. The home movies in Croton -- I was born 5 yrs after she died, but Bob still had the house. Attended a number of weddings there as a kid. I remember some of the art on the walls in the footage. Never seen this before. Of course this was before she was "out" in the public eye.
lifestraight My wording was awkward- I did not mean before she was in the public eye; I was pointing out the fact that she was never “out” as a lesbian during her life, and not acknowledged as such by her estate for a couple of decades after her death.
Exactly! I was thinking the same thing. BET use to have educational content like this years ago. She died 1 year before I was born and this is the first I've ever heard of her eventhough her play "Raisin in the Sun" was my 2nd stage play I attended as a child.
