Critical Mass was started in San Francisco in September of 1992 as a protest against Motordom. I went to my first Critical Mass in San Francisco a year later in 1993. In Los Angeles, Critical Mass was started circa 1999 by Joe Linton and the folks at Eco Village, Los Angeles. We used to meet at Mulholland Fountain in Los Feliz. On some rides, there would be as many as a dozen of us! Since then, Critical Mass grew and moved over to meeting at the Wilshire & Western Metro station in Korea Town. Eventually it was taken over by some group that wasn’t embedded in the Los Angeles bike movement. (Korean church? Scientology? Cryptocurrency Cultists?) Where it used to be the most hardcore activist protest ride in town, it mellowed and became a well-coordinated happy party ride with multiple guard cars escorting the mass. (I honestly have no idea who these people are that lead what was supposed to be a leaderless ride, but I have to say they seem to do a good job at keeping it organized and manage to keep the aggressive drivers at bey.) Anywho, Happy Critical Mass 30! And remember you are traffic.
