I work for an Amtrak thruway shuttle that transport passengers from Flagstaff AZ to Williams, AZ to the Grand Canyon Railway and Southwest Chief 4 is my train i transport for. Alot of ppl get frustrated or angry because Amtrak is always delayed. But there is no need to be, make it part of your adventure!! And not once have they missed out on a connecting transportation because of the delays. Ppl just need to relax and enjoy!

An excellent video for anyone who loves passenger trains. Amtrak trains can run on both BNSF and UP. The Southwest Chief runs exclusively on BNSF because when Amtrak was created it replaced the Santa Fe's two premier trains, the Chief and the Super Chief. The only route change came when BNSF sold the original route between San Bernardino and LAUPT via Pasadena to be used for the Gold Line light rail. At that point the Southwest Chief started running through Fullerton. The Amtrak California Zephyr replaced the original California Zephyr that was a joint train operated by the Burlington (now BNSF), the Rio Grande and the Western Pacific (both now UP). I could be wrong, but I think that "Southern Transcon" usually refers to the former Southern Pacific (now UP) Sunset Route from LA to New Orleans, though the former Santa Fe transcon is the more Southerly of BNSF's two transcon routes, the other being from Chicago to Seattle or Portland. The original transcon from Omaha to Sacramento is now all UP. By the way, Amtrak did once have an LA-Salt Lake City train called the Desert Wind that ran via Las Vegas. Living in Pasadena in the 70s we could see both the Southwest Chief and Desert Wind after stopping in Pasadena travelling down the middle of the freeway where the Gold Line now goes.

California Zephyr runs along the UP between West Oakland and Denver, and then along the BNSF between Denver and Chicago. Regarding passenger service between LA-LV, Amtrak used to operate the Desert Wind ( LA-Las Vegas-SLC )...but that got cancelled in the late 90s during the many budget cuts due to low ridership.

Re intercity from LA to LVNV, I believe the private carrier Brightline (operates now in Florida) have won the right to build such a high-ish speed line, from just outside LA. It will, of course, be years in the making. Also, since you showed the menu, it's clear that your appetizer was the Mexican souffle! As to the "provodnik" not making your bed, did you try using the call button? I do believe they have to make up your bed if you request it.
@doc7austin
@doc7austin 2 года назад
Didn't the Desert Wind connect LA with LV? From Barstow and LV the train could use the Cima Subdivision line; The provodnik was virtually all the time in the Transition Sleeping Car, i dont think a call button would have helped; Where is such a call button?
@TrainwreckPoet

the call button is next to the buttons or switches for the lights… Yes, once you press the call button your Provodnika must & will respond. Unless it between quiet hours from 22:00 to 07:00

The reason to why your train has as two P42DC or combined P40DC P42DC formation is that The Southwest chief needs that power to climb I-25 Raton Pass and I-15 Cajon Pass Railroad Tracks. Otherwise Southwest Chief Needs to be pushed from the back end by a BNSF Helper locomotive at Cajon and Raton Passes. This is the same practice at Aachen Hbf Ronheider Rampe towards Liege DB BR232 218 363 pushes the train from the back then Separate once it reaches the summit of the route. Since SNCB NMBS HLE18 Alstom HLE21 27 13 lack the power to make Ronheider Rampe that changed with rework of 2007-2011 where SNCB NMBS HLE18 Siemens has enough power the make the climb over Ronheider Rampe. One more thing that Amtrak means to learn from its European counterpart ÖBB Nightjet is that the economy Class can be Placed in compartments something that American Sleeper trains lack. Followed by couchette and steam heated food Instead of using microwave on the restaurant carriage which are the viewliner II and Superliners

Many Americans dislike to be in a small room with 3 or 5 strangers like the couchettes of NightJet. They prefer the safety of the airplane cabin model of coach. I can see better acceptance for the Canadian VIARail cheapest flatbed accomodations where the roomettes have no walls and are just separated by curtains at night when each pair of seats become a set of bunk beds

President Bill Clinton stopped the train that ran from LA to Vegas to Salt Lake City to spite the Utahns who overwhelmingly voted against him at the highest rate in the nation. There was some project to bring back train service under the Brightline brand and California and Nevada issued $3.2 billion dollars worth of construction bonds but it's not clear how that's going or if it is still being built. Thanks Doc for another great video. I think that car was a current production Charger rather than a classic model but I wouldn't bet money on it.

To say that there's nothing but desert between both cities is, again, codswallop; after all, there's nothing between the cities on this particular train except desert and forests.
