Donovan Beckom grew up in Inglewood, California playing football most of his life.
It paid off when he earned a starting role on varsity his sophomore year at Cathedral High School, where Bryce Young played a few seasons prior.
Cathedral had just moved up to the Mission League, one of the toughest in Southern California, and playing against schools four times their size, went 0-5 in the shortened Covid spring season.
Still, Donovan made quite an impact, with 38 tackles, 4 pass deflections and a blocked punt.
Beckom was set for a breakout junior season, but was injured in the third game, missing the remainder of the key year for recruiting.
Without Beckom, Cathedral went 1-9 and several players transferred out, but Donovan stayed, became a captain and started both ways.
His senior season was massive, with 40 tackles, 5 picks and 195 interception return yards on defense, 630 yards and 5 touchdowns on offense, and 450 return yards on special teams.
Cathedral went 10-3 and just missed out on playing for a city championship.
Beckom committed to Fort Hays State in Kansas, where he redshirted as a freshman and will focus on defense for the Tigers.
