Back in 1953 I spent a summer working on a fruit ranch in the Pacheco pass. There were braceros there but they were not allowed to work because the gov. felt living conditions were inadequate, so they just played cards all day. The accommodations were a “converted” horse barn which had screens above the stall walls. You could hear everything going on in everyone’s stall. Food was great, work was hard. I got to be a foreman because the bosses could instruct my in English. I used demos and sign language. My partner had take Spanish in high school but stopped trying to use it because everyone laughed so much at his accent. We were the only two anglos on the ranch (except the bosses). Not many anglos know how hard, and how skilled farm labor is.
