I would say Gangnam Style is the closest gen z equivalence to Macarena in terms of the speed at which it became an instant global hit, and the fact that both are mostly known for the easy to follow signature dance moves. Both carry a similar vibe (comedic) and are the most famous one hit wonders (at least on a global scale) of their respective generation. Despacito is an immensely popular song that defines an era in music but it does not have the same unique characteristics that Macarena and Gangnam Style share and are famous for.

@Alba Gómez Moreno I know a lot of it had to do with that teachers would play it in P.E. class in school, and teach kids to dance to it because of the beat. Similar to how the Cha Cha Slide was used to get kids moving and dancing, as well.

This song was an entire cultural phenomenon. Part of my childhood. Everyone knew this song and this dance. A DJ played this song a few years ago at an event. The size of the crowd (including me) that got involved to dance was bananas. :D Everyone had so much fun.
