This is another fantastic Disney family flick! Mirabel, a normal member of an extraordinary family, must go on a journey of discovery to save her home and her family's powers before the magic disappears for good.

Dos Oruguitas was the song that was nominated for the Oscar. I still think it should have won.

i dont think abuela was shunning away mirabel purposely. i think she was scared that their miracle is slowly dying, which migjt have brought back the trauma she experienced when she lost her home and husband in the same night and had to raise three kids on her own.

The message of the story isn't just that Mirabell can be just as important, or even more important, than rest of her family because she is an average human being. No, the entire film revolves around WHY the Madrigal's were gifted the miracle in the first place. Abuela was gifted the miracle because her and her husband sacrificed everything for the sake of their family. Abuela is growing older, and it is natural that the magic would be looking for someone within the family to continue the magic of the miracle; to pass it along through further generations. It is my firm belief that the miracle was searching for another matriarch to lead the family into the next generation. Isabella almost made the cut, but she wasn't the perfect fit. Isabella attempts to be perfect for the sake of her family, but not all of it is genuine, so the magic said 'there is someone else who will come along that will be a better fit'. Then Mirabell came along, and she was perfect. She is completely and utterly selfless, despite her own wants and wishes. She worked hard to get over her insecurities of not receiving a gift, because the well-being and betterment of her family was more important than anything a special power could give her. When she walked down to get her own door when she was a kid, the house literally told her 'this isn't the right door for you' and made the door disappear. Abuela never received a gift. But she did receive the miracle itself, which was all for the sake of giving her family a good life. She may not have gone about it in the right ways, but it makes sense that (because you were given that miracle) you would put so much dependence on it that you would forget what it was that earned you that gift in the first place; the betterment and happiness of her family. She may seem like a bitter and selfish woman, but that is not the case. She is seeing the risk of her own home falling apart, her family falling apart, and wrongly believes that the cause of that is Mirabell's not receiving a gift. She is terrified that the wonderful life the miracle has given her family will be destroyed because of means beyond her control, not realizing that SHE is the reason the home is falling apart in the first place; because she has placed too much dependence in the miracle itself to truly see how her family feels. It's a situation of the house saying "These two people are worthy of our blessing" but at the same time, it is a situation of 'people who are too alike do not get along'. Abuela and Mirabell were both born of the same breed. They are selfless, giftless, positive and are working for (what they believe) is best for the family. Each child gets their own room catered to their gifts, yes, but the ENTIRE house only obeys to Abuela and Mirabell. That is the first sign.

Thank you for this reaction!! As a Colombian it kinda hurts when people hate on Abuela because we know the fight, we know what it is when violence destroys your home, and how our older generations have so much trauma that passes on to us. But with problems and all, we do have a magical home, cause Colombia is magical and I really wish you could come visit once everything is better. Big big hugs! and lots of success with your channel. Thank you so much! Looking back, I realize there's a cultural divide that affected my viewing. While I still dislike her actions, I can recognize why she did what she did. It makes the story more real, more fleshed out. And from what little I've seen in movies or photographs, Colombia is a beautiful country. Thanks for the subscription, and we hope you enjoy our future content!

After three or four viewings, it occurred to me that poor Abuela had no idea what she was supposed to do with the magic. She didn't know where it came from, what was expected, or how to take care of it. How terrifying it must be to suddenly have to take care of three new babies and tend to a magical candle that gives out miracles but has no instructions. How could she know what might make the candle go out or the gifts stop? I think she's doing her best to keep things status quo, since that's what has been working all along. Plus as the matriarch of the family, and basically of the whole village, Alma has to appear to have it all together when she is as in the dark as everyone else. I hate the way she behaved towards her family, but I really just hurt for her.

I would say a lot of people had hard feelings (I was one of them) toward Abuela Alma until the end when the sanitized "Disney" version of what happened was stripped away and we saw just how brutal and raw it was, I don't think Disney has ever depicted abject grief like that before, and how scared and unprepared Alma was but she carried on but never moved on from the trauma and was still terrified that it could all be stripped away again. Such good storytelling.

Thanks so much for the reaction! 🥰 I was gonna jump to Alma's defense but I see others have already done that 😂 I totally get where you were coming from though! It's very easy to vilify someone when we either don't know their whole story or simply don't relate to it 🤷 My grandma and I were a lot alike in many ways and would often butt heads. With my undiagnosed Autism and meltdowns that read as "tantrums" I didn't really comprehend why it sometimes seemed like I was a disappointment to her. In hingsight, she was essentially running our household on her own which consisted of: my grandpa, a stroke survivor with dementia in the years prior to his death (for whom she was the sole caregiver), my mom with bipolar disorder (who never wanted her help but always needed it), me with my autism (though at the time they just saw me as high maintenance), and my reclusive uncle (who really couldn't make up his mind whether he actually lived there or not 😅). Plus she had her four other adult children and their families who all expected her to be just as present for them, even though they had their own households and weren't around as often. She may not have had a whole village to look after, but she opened her doors to everyone from friends, to in-laws, to distant cousins, and even took in borders from out of town sometimes! I never realized she had the weight of the world on her shoulders at the time. I felt, at times, like an inconvenience to her and a thorn in her side. I thought she cared for me out of obligation and even though I was pretty sure she loved me, I never really thought she liked me very much. Looking back on it now, I wish I had spent less time trying to make myself heard or understood and more time trying to listen to and understand her ❤💕 She's been gone since 2013 (and from 2007 when my mom died, she was the only parent I had). I can never get those years back and I know that in my teen years I called her even worse names than the ones you used for Abuela Alma in your video! I'd like to think that even if she wasn't proud of the person I was in my youth, she would be proud of the person I strive to be nowadays. I may not be Colombian, but I have many other reasons for relating to this movie and its multitude of extremely relatable characters. I am stubborn like Alma, have low self-esteem like Mirabel, am accident prone like Augustín, a fixer like Julieta, emotional like Pepa, goofy like Felix, have sensory issues like Dolores, a perfectionist like Isabela, being non-binary I see myself in Luisa, I'm a people pleaser like Camilo, shy like Antonio, and eccentric like Bruno! Oh and like Mariano, I have "so much love inside" 😂🥰😍 This movie is one for the ages and I really and truly enjoyed and appreciated your reaction! 🙏😊💕 Keep up the great content! 🥰

I think this movie is an excellent study of several phenomena at work... in terms of representation, it pulls on the history of Colombia, where desplacados are a thing that still exists today... violence, political or due to gang wars, forces people to abandon their homes to flee to safety... and the theme of magical realism is exceptionally well represented. magic is because magic is..it's subtle and not always clear in purpose, nor is how it works defined in a hard rules system. Gabriel Garcia Marquez is probably the most celebrated author who explores this literary genre. Then we have the familial dynamics side... the movie represents really well how, especially within contexts of expats and people from cultures with strong generational ties and bonds, expectations play a great role in shaping bonds and individuals. Every second generation immigrant knows the expectations, hopes and aspirations their parents have put on them.... After all, the parents moved, sometimes fled, amongst great difficulties, sometimes holding down multiple jobs and struggling to integrate in the new place, all to give their family a better chance...so as the child, you are both expected, by yourself or by them directly, and hope to not disappoint them... There's also the notion of having to somehow "deserve, be worthy" of living with the newly acquired privilege (the magical power)...Those who do not have that power, are in a way dismissed, but also are not weighted down by expectations. it can be a cruel and difficult way of life either way. Finally, the generational trauma and how it affects each and every member of any future generation in their own way. if you look at each character, you can see their struggles. Abuela holds on to her grief for 5 decades (symbolised by her black shawl, which she puts on once the Casita is born and only puts down after revisiting the place where she lost Pedro, when she allows herself to let go of the pain), she is the matriarch and the one gifted with the magical candle. the entire village relies on her guidance. All the responsibilities of the world weigh upon her and she does not have anyone to guide her..she's effectively blind to how the magic works and puts up walls and rules to try and not break anything, appease the magic...thereby trapping herself with her grief. Pepa has to be constantly on the verge of a nervous breakdown. She controls the weather, but the weather controls her too. She cannot allow herself to be genuinely mad or she might tear down the village, she must always be positive and happy, and trap her negative emotions, quench them and push them away... but also, they live in a farming comnunity..they do need rain. does she have to make herself feel sad on command? She must walk on emotional eggshells and everybody around her must navigate life with an emotional wreck. Julieta is the healer. she is the classic latina mother figure, but she must also be somewhat trapped in her role of providing food and healing to the entire comunity. She might be the most well adjusted in the family, but she is entirely subservient to her role and to her mother, allowing the latter to walk all over Mirabel. Bruno would love nothing more than to help his family, but he is seen as the harbinger of bad news and doom. He is nervous and kind, and fragile, and hides in the walls. He has been given potentially the strongest gift of them all, but they must play with his brain a lot...so he develops rituals and hangs on to superstitions to somehow find an external responsible for the things his vision show him. Isabela is the eldest grandchild. She is also the spitting image of a young Alma... who sees herself in her and, for her more than fore anybody else, she is planning and hoping for her to have the life she never had. Isabella must be the perfect child for Abuela Alma to feel that her sacrifices have not been in vain. She is trapped in the role and has to deny parts of herself, and only shows her true colours (literally), when she is freed from the expectations, when she allows herself to be who she wants to be, for once. Until then, she is forced in a role that she never asked for, down to sacrificing her potential entire future life by marrying a man she has no interest in. (there's also a theory floating around that she might not be into men at all, which only compounds her struggle and sacrifice). Luisa is the strong one, and this strength has become the reason everybody relies on her. She is that woman in every family that is the first person to be called, expected to fix all problems and know all the answers. She is as trapped as her sister, in a role of service that never lets up. she is always under pressure because there is always someone who needs help..and she is the one who can help, so she must, and she feels powerless and pointless if she can't help. Her entire identity is tied to this... Dolores has definitely gotten the short end of the stick, when it comes to powers... from the age of 5, when she received her powers, she is the keeper of the entire village's secrets. she knows everything, hears everything, cannot have a moment to herself and is so conditioned by always listening and always hearing what everybody is arguing, fighting, discussing or maybe being mean about, that she only speaks in whispers. Even her singing voice is a whisper. She knows Abuela's prayers, she knows Bruno's secrets (she hears the rats talking int he walls, except she doesn't speak rat..she does speak Bruno though), until the one night in the movie where she stands to lose the man she loves, she dares not speak up, to not cause trouble (her mother Pepa, for one, would have a nervous breakdown...and she does not want to be put through what Bruno went through when his power started to make people think bad of him)... Camilo is a caretaker, always ready to help others, always trying to use humour to cope, and to lighten the mood... He looks after his mother when she has an episode, he offers help to his brother when he is feeling anxious, he turns into a mother who can't cope with her baby's wailing, and so on... but what happens when he loses control over his powers? his head turns into that of a baby. Maybe he grew up too fast, and has not had time to enjoy himself... (remember, the powers are given at around 5years of age). Little Antonio.. he is 5, but terrified of ending up like Mirabel, having to live in the nursery forever. He can't bear the thought of disappointing Abuela Alma... He is an otherwise perfectly happy and confident child, as is shown after he gets the weight of expectations off his back, but in the moments leading up to it, even as a little boy, he is feeling the effects of the generational trauma at work. Maybe that's why the rats (who mostly obey him) put together the prophecy.. The way for a child to blow the lid on the whole situation and interrupt the chain of pain. And then there's Mirabel, whose traumas and feelings of failure are there, exposed for everybody to see. She's the odd one out on whom no expectations are placed... but it makes her feel alienated at best. She dresses in the colours and symbols of her entire family, but it is not enough for her to feel like she belongs, like she's worthy... to the point that she removes herself from the family picture by never stepping forward. This whole family is one big trauma of which even the husbands Felix and Augustin feel the effects and carry the loads. It's really a wonder that Disney would take the risk of going so deep into a psychological character study. also, shout out to Mariano who got curbstomped publicly when he proposed, got then punched in the nose twice, but still was first in line bringing help to the Madrigals in their hour of need. he's the normie hero that flies under the radar.

That's how I saw it by the end. Isabela's power and demeanor were enforced perfection, the embodiment of everything wrong with how the family operated. Embracing Abuela, who looked like Isabela in her youth, meant embracing the lack of perfection.
