Improve your pronunciation of "r" in French and German! Richard explains how to position your tongue and control your breath to make this sound correctly.
Many people get overwhelmed with the idea of sounding like a native in studying a foreign language. Speaking with an accent seems like a normal state. However, with a few tips on being aware of how our mouth makes sounds, a little concentration can produce great results. I made this video series to show you how to increase your awareness of all the parts of your speaking apparatus.
Speaking a language feels wonderful as you work to move your mouth like a native.

this is a really really difficult sound to make. I feel like I lost my ability to expand my phonemic inventory even though I'm only 20. Learn languages early, kids.

Thank you so much for this tutorial, I've been practicing on my German accent, the "R" sound was my biggest stumbling blocks, after seeing this video, I was able to vibrate my uvula to do the German R, After months and weeks of frustration lol. Thank you so much, this video saved me from the struggles, You made my German lessons easier and simple.

Excellent video! Immediately managed to make the sound thanks to your explanation, now it's just practicing how to move to and from that sound in actual words. One question, if you are still responding to comments (I never properly learned IPA, so forgive any incorrect terminology): this is a definite, clearly defined trill, and I'm not quite understanding how to move from that clear trill to the more approximant/fricative sound made at the same place for the typical French 'r'.
@richardlanguage
@richardlanguage 3 года назад
Thanks for the question. I can't think of a specific technique to move to the next consonant. For me, it was like trilling my /r/ with the tip of my tongue. I just found common words to practice with. Eg, try "ronronner" ("to purr") in French.

Thanks, this is super helpful ! The only problem i have no is how to then transfer the R sound into a word!? (in particular German words, as that's what I'm learning). As soon as i then say Frau, Brot, rund or Radio etc.. i'm back to my English accent :-( Any tips would be great, thank you so much
@richardlanguage

You have down the place of articulation and the position of your tongue. Great! I think that "Brot" and "Frau" would be good words to get used to the articulation of "r". Keep pronouncing these words; practice will surely improve what you're doing.

Very helpful explanation, I still can't hit that spot where I hear that trill sound. Is there a specific spot you place your tongue near the uvula? I sound like I'm chocking on something 😂😂

What I don't like about your video is that you teach how to pronounce a uvular trill, but most Germans use a voiced uvular fricative.

nope french is romance language ~scarcasm~ not gutteral the slightest...
@tonyhawk94
@tonyhawk94 5 лет назад
The two infos are not related. France is a romance language with a guttural "R", probably brought by the Frankish (a Germanic tribe) and that spread in France trhough the years. The "r" itself is said to originate from the Celts that gave it to the Germanic tribes.
@bobbyb9258
@bobbyb9258 3 года назад
@@tonyhawk94 But since the gauls were celts it's highly possible the latin R became guttural just with gauls deforming latin, without the help of the franks.
