As a Spark of many years, if you are honest, clean and tidy, reliable and polite, then you are already better than 90% of the rest. You only need to do a few jobs and recommendations will keep you busy. No need to advertise, if you are good and honest enough.

I wanted my house rewiring but my electrician was too busy to fit me in. So I asked him what boards wanted lifting the cable routes etc so he spent some time explaining what was required. I drilled the joists and got pull throughs where required. Outcome. He was able to fit me in and I saved a load of money on labour. Result happy client and tradesman. Mind you much respect to you house bashers as it wasn't easy.

Did something similar on the board replacement I just had done. The sparky left me a length of 10mm cable, we discussed the route and I put the cable in so that it came down next to the board and the other end dropped into my kitchen where it needed to be. There was much dark muttering of swear words during that process 😂

I started a long time ago, asking what a person's budget was, if they have £2k in mind for a rewire and I think it's £4k then it's no point going any further. I often think with people like the guy in the video, that if everyone in my area were using his services where's the benefits🤔. Also the majority of people are only price oriented, and when it goes wrong they are all over social media crying about it, and I have no sympathy with those people. Since time began a lot of electricians like to be in the race to see who can get to the bottom first, something I have never been interested in, I price my skills accordingly, they can take it or leave it.

All the jobs I won when other companies was quoting for the same job, wasn’t based on price. The customer always says that I was more expensive. The reason customers go for me is because of confidence in my ability. In fact I’m one of the more expensive one man bands. Sometimes you don’t win a job because of how you come across to the customer.
@rayc1503
@rayc1503 2 года назад
You get a good or bad vibes from customers. If your senses feel off about someone. You give them an off the top over quote. Sometimes it's not worth the hassle. If you represent yourself and your quality well enough. You should be able to bring in the work. Just remember growth doesn't come in a day or few weeks, It can take years. We try to learn and expand our knowledge in a forever growing industry.

Great video opening up the big picture of self employment lads. It's difficult if you are in a small area and trying to deal with call outs as well as scheduled jobs. I always used to say to delayed customers that one day it could be them in an emergency and my policy was to sort the emergencies first.

I do specialist work and I get beat on cost by non electricians who tell the customer they are proficient in electrics. Then I get the "customer" using it against me and all I can do is say well I had to serve 6 years to get to Approved status (Scotland) have 46 years experience and cannot do the job on Handyman rates Remember Proficient is not qualified . If not qualified then your not insured to do electrics and legally you are personally responsible for any claim by the customer. Another point is Kenny the kitchen fitter and Billy the bathroom fitter are not qualified either yet they stil "dabble" in electrics . Joe public needs to be educated

You say that but insurance companies will not insure them or their work. I I plumbed in a washing machine for a customer and flood their house my insurance would not pay pointing out I am insured for electrics Yes aminsured for putting a nail thtough a pipe but not to do plumbing@@jonh1808

Some great advice here. I’ve been thinking of going alone for a long time and always thought I’d have to be a house basher. You made a good point in that that’s not my skill set. I’m commercial/industrial and maybe that’s what I should stick to.

Great vid guys. Pleased to see how much of that I already do. The video I would love to see is how to go from being self employed with maybe having 1 or 2 labourer type people working for you. To having a business, having a second van and how to find and trust the skilled person in that van. That's been my stumbling block in the last few years
@The360Electrician
@The360Electrician 2 года назад
Thanks for the video, I agree. Most electricians and other trades at that are great at the trade but not so well at running a business. I would say sales skills are just as important and in some cases more important than knowing everything in the trade. Without selling you have nothing. It's the number one questions I get in my coaching classes.

Really interesting video this. I've lost 3 big quotes recently(2k-7k) one of which I'd spent a whole weekend on the quote. I had already mentally worked out it was about £7k and I was pretty much bang on so next time I'm going to give the customer my rough estimate and gauge their response with a view of not even providing a quote for that work. Thank you Sales Geek!

When we get an enquiry for a quote, the first thing we ask is “do you mind if I ask what the purpose of the quote is” Ie to get the cheapest quote, or get an idea of the cost. We point out that we are unlikely to be the cheapest quote and explain why. The majority clients really appreciate this and will say thank you for your honesty, and the ones on a tight budget will tell you they are on a tight budget.

Been in this trade 25 years now. Never before has there been a level of toxicity and arrogance surrounding this trade than there is now. Ok they are usually all for the banter but how everyone perceives us is beyond a joke. I have made a good living. I do well. I have gone to jobs where I have made very decent money but been half the price of the dearest quote. Yes it needs a bit of skill, common sense, and a grasp of the regulations but we aren’t brain surgeons and the perception of us on site is wanting a kings ransom for doing naff all. Love the channel. Keep it up 👍

Over many years I have found there are people you just can't help, and no matter how cheap the price how short the time you have allowed, it's not good enough and they have a (cretin) mate who will bodge it in for nothing. Just walk away leave them to it. 🐔

From my point of view I almost never have to give a price. I’m not the cheapest and I use top brand products. Customers I find what a good job and someone who will turn up in an emergency on a cold winters night and not rip them off. . I get fed up of seeing cheep jobs where the electrician has damaged floor board as they don’t know how to lift them . Unnecessary holes cut in ceilings for fishing. . No tube in walls the list goes on. And then they have used the cheapest consumer unit out there and you can’t get Mcbs rcds off the shelf. It’s the same with other trades not just electricians.

Hi, question for you guys. Just done a job installing a 150KVa engine Generator (replacing 100KVa) & I’ve just been pulled up on the test certificate because the three position changeover switch doesn’t disconnect the DNO earth. NIC are saying that it needs to, but when looking on line can’t find any switches that change over the earth or means of doing so. I have looked on forums but getting mixed responses. Cheers guys
@efixx
@efixx 2 года назад
The NIC answer seems correct to us that you can’t rely upon the DNO earth when operating in “island mode” - eg the DNO could be working on their network cabling and you lose the earth.

If you advertise yourself as a *Cheap Electrician,* You will only get the low end of the market. You will be fitting low end equipment which is a pain to work with. You will find more problems being paid. And more call backs you will use poor equipment.
