Don’t kick yourself man. You grabbed it by the tail so you absolutely landed it. If I get a big fish to my feet and he pops off I’m usually psyched because it’s a clean release. Not getting a nice picture for your memories can hurt but nothing about that catch should get you down! Outstanding fish on 6Lb. Especially without a steel or braided leader.
Dude that happened to me on my first salmon of the year. It hurts. But I say that was landed . Out of the water and In hand. Enjoying the content. Glad to see the channel growing
So here's what a buddy of mine taught me: he carries a 4 ft piece of parachute cord rolled up in the pocket of his fishing vest. On one end he has tied a permanent loop large enough to put his hand through it. On the other end is a slip knot (like a lasso). When he catches a big fish and doesn't have a net (or the net is too small) he simply "tails" the fish (puts the slip knot around the tail and cinches it down). When a big fish tries to swim away the slip knot tightens and the fish can be held tight by grasping the permanent loop on the other end of the cord. Fish are easier to "tail" than to try to hold them by the body or lip or gills. If you've ever watched the TV series "Wicked Tuna," once a tuna is brought close to the boat with a gaff hook, the first thing the guys do is put a rope around the tail with a slip knot and it secures their catch!
Yeah that makes sense.. lot of armchair experts in the comment that say grabbing them but the tail is a no no. But they’ve probably never caught anything bigger than 2 pounds😂
Would it have been beneficial to use the small net and try to scoop him up somewhat from his tail? Still we got to see a very good look at this fish and I'd consider it a catch
If I was in this situation, after I grabbed the tail I woulda tried to get his head in the net and haul him further on shore. Trust me man! I once did this with a 3lb smallmouth, it hurts but it’s part of fishing! Tight lines man, hope u can get that Musky!
I feel your pain man, I’ve had that happen a lot to me so now when me and my buddies get one that close one of us will always jump in to grab it not worth the risk of losing it
I've had this happen to me, my tip is when you had him at the end , put you knee on the fish or wrap you arm around and scoop it up. I feel your pain my man. Keep up the good work 👊
LOL! Fish long enough & that just happens if you are being “gentle” on the fish with a light weight line. I agree with others that it was caught. If that happens to me & I want to keep the fish, what usually works is back up a bit from the bank. That keeps the fish from seeing you as easy & takes the deep bend out of the rod. When its tired enough to get near the bank reel & pull in one big continuous motion, so the fish builds up speed approaching the bank, & haul them up on shore. Then quickly run up & get between the fish & the water. Do this the first time the fish approaches the bank. The fish is still trying to figure things out. Don’t mess around with light line, haha. I don’t do this to fish I’m going to release though…. Otherwise you best get those feet wet & get in there, snatch that gill plate (gill PLATE, not gills), & lift them out of the water to unhook them if you don’t have a good net…. Better to have your experience then nothing! 🎣👍🏻
I just sight fished a 3 foot bowfin today. He peeled drag and went under the bridge I was on. I would’ve had him in except the bank was immediately steep out the water with weeds blocking my view. I don’t know if I’ll see him again but It wouldn’t the biggest fish of my life.
Watching you was more fun than catching that fish myself. Remembering the biggest fish I have ever seen would be a replay of what just happened to you. I got a bigger net for those 10 pounders. Can't buy memories like that😥
Bro, I know the EXACT feeling... I hooked into what was likely a 38" lake trout last ice season on a 26" medium light rod with 6lbs test. I fought that fish for about 15-20 minutes to get it to the hole. It was so big, I'm not even sure if I could of fit it's body up the 8" hole. I had it's head up, trying to get it by the gill plate, but every time I tried it would start thrashing and I didn't want to lose it. About 3 times this happened trying to get it up the hole, and on the last time I tried lifting it just a smidgen higher to get a better grab, and my line snapped... it was so worn out in just sat there beneath the hole for a few seconds before swimming away, and there was nothing I could do to grab it. So I feel you man, I thought about that fish for a good 3 weeks after thinking about what I could have done differently. In the end, you hooked it, you touched it, so don't beat yourself up. It happens. Nothing left to do but get back out there and go after it again 💪
Man that sucks!!😂 it’s alright though. That’s why it’s nice to have video though, so even if you don’t have pictures you can go back and watch the fight! Thanks for watching!
As someone else pointed out in the comments, you had him by the tail so It kinda count like landing him. So the way I see it, you freaking landed that fish like what, 3 times in that short video?! Incredible my man!
Bro that was so painful to watch. Just grab his tail harder or give him a little toss onto the bank. He won’t be injured. Or when he’s half in the water half on the bank put the net in front of his head before he makes a run even tho it’s too small it would keep him in place while you get a firm grip on the tail. Ultimately there was a few ways that could have been avoided but I still count it as a catch. Absolutely beautiful fish
Agreed, too much time playing with the fish and not enough time actually tryna grab it or get in the water a bit. Idk if you had expensive shoes but least you saw it
"I know nothing about bass fishing..." We are basically opposites as I say that same thing when I am filming my trout fishing episodes and you are very comfortable fishing for trout. For me, bass, no problem (usually), but trout........ forget about it.
When you net a fish you put in if front of them and slide it over their mouth, never from behind and never grab a fish by its tail, it will always slip out of your hands, grab it towards the middle or front of the body. Nice Muskie by the way, I wonder where in Colorado we have pike, muskie, walleye AND wiper, Im guessing Pueblo?
now that was a great fish man, least you had it there and got great video of it.. i know what lake your at, my great great grandfather is at reat in the town near by., yes love this vedio.
The way the line is curled on the end looks more like a fatigued knot pull, on the last hard run he did, Good job with 6 lb test, especially not panicking.
Sometimes you make mistakes when learning how to handle first time fish that are fairly large for even someone who is targeting those fish. Learn from it, remember it, and make the adjustments to land the next one like it. Love your journey and love your videos. I look forward to them cause we live and fish in the same places. Good luck.
One of my favorite places to fish. My son and I hammered the wipers there in the summer. It's definitely gotten hard to catch fish there. White curly tails and muscles are the ticket there.
If ur going for pike or musky, u need a bigger rod, more than 6lb test and wire leader, other u will just get broke or bit off everytime leaving the fish with ur lure stuck in his face
Exact same thing happened to me a that same spot with 3 Different muskies, was using my medium light for wiper and hooked into the 3 different muskies, didn't have a way to land them, but the third I was able to pull up on shore
Screw what the haters say. You did your best to land a nice Musky on light tackle. Was gonna take a long time to land that fish from the get go because it is a coldwater species with a LOT of fight. Props to trying to tire him out. 🤙
I know you’re normally trout fishing so you were trying your best to treat the fish with care. But you could have easily held a stronger grip on that fish. Had it in your hands 3 times lol. We win some and we lose some. Next time don’t be afraid to grab ahold of it.
8 and a half minutes in and I gotta take a break before I break my phone 😂 definitely one of the most frustrating things I ever watched, next time, F*CK the camera and pole, you can set it down to land the fish, it doesn't matter if you film it as long as you land it, you can't possibly land a fish that size with just one hand. WOOOO the adrenaline is real 😂😂 I feel you broooo I wanted it for you so bad
I feel your pain mate. It sucks to loose a fish like that. I’ve tried to do the same with trout fishing gear and it doesn’t usually work. Love the video keep ip the great work
Could had just grabbed that fish by the gill plate and he'd be a landed fish. On the bright side, tarpon fishermen count just being able to touch the leader as a landed fish and you actually put hands on it so technically you can say it was caught I guess
That is a real tuff break, especially a Muskie I know you definitely wanted to get him out of the water and really be there with the fish and take proper pictures, but honestly you had the fish on shore with your hand on him so you really landed it in my opinion, but I understand I’m the same way I just don’t know how to feel. Also if you pause the video it actually looks like a picture with it so I say you landed it and released him easy!
I just had the mule deer of my reams walk over the hill on public land here in MT. Huge 4 x4 frame with extras and chocolate antlers. Couldnt get an ethical shot... I can def feel for you on this one. I can tell you one thing... Im going back!!!! Do the same!
