Agree! Everyone keeps talking about finding/exhuming his body and giving him a “proper burial”… I think a far more important thing for them to do to finally respect his talent and place within Disney film history would be to make him a Disney Legend already! I cannot believe this has not been done. And then to trash him so blatantly in that new (very strange looking) Chip n’ Dale movie… not a good look, Disney.

It's funny- some people got the kid glove send-off like Hayley Mills did, and some got absolutely screwed over like Bobby Driscoll did. Hayley Mills was lucky though that she came from a stable family that emphasized her finishing her education. Besides, from what I understand, his dream was to play baseball, so his working in films as a kid was probably like the rest of us cleaning up our parent's markets, or delivering newspapers.

Nonsense. He was not 'overworked and manipulated', though you seem to think this dramatic description was real. Garland worked on more than one picture at a time, had pills to wake her up and to make her sleep, she was starved and only given chicken soup at the studio to keep her weight down. SHE WAS overworked. I bet you couldn't list two dozen things Driscoll did in his whole career. His story is sad but let's not thrown the baby out with the bathwater.

@@IronycheinPain Walt was still alive, Bobby did go to the Disneyland opening and Walt was very well alive then. I do think it was a mix of reasons. One, as you mentioned the new owner of RKO (i think) studios, which also controlled the money for Disney Studios, was Howard Hughes and he did hate child stars and didn't seem to think much of Driscoll as an actor, the film he did under loan for RKO was released a year later because Hughes found it mediocre and Bobby's acting unimpressive. Two, I think it was also the board of directors choice, I think Walt still wanted him for like other roles or something, but he did grow up, he had his salary raised but he wasn't getting jobs, so the board probably decided 'they were paying this boy salary and he getting no job, boot it'. In the end, it's just sad how it all panned out to be.

I think that Bobby Driscoll's life should be bought into the light because Bobby meant so much to so many kid's when he was making all of those Disney films. I remember hearing on Entertainment Tonight that Bobby's boyhood friend Russ Tamblyn was going to write a book on Bobby Driscoll. Russ actually thought that Bobby may have murdered .

How could you even cast someone to play a kid with such a distinctive face? Never-mind his adult counterpart!

Now some weeks qgo here in Deutschland i have purchased the DVD "Treasure Island" - synchronized in German language. The final of that movie is unsatisfactorily but kid actor Bobby was/is outstanding...:) By the way:Since a very long time I have a tv-recording of "The Window" (black/white) - also synchronized. (Das unheimliche Fenster).

When the studio system comes back after Congress breaks up big tech leading to the second Golden Age, child stars will get what they deserve but instead of the old "chew-em-up-and-spit-em-out" schtick of the past it will be the "break-em-down-and-rebuild-them" like the military. There will be loyalty to stars no matter what and stars will be treated as soldiers. "This is my talent! There are many like it but this one is mine!" That is how it will be after I take over Disney and sign actors to contracts to only make movies for Disney.

Today most films are produced by independent companies, and only distributed by traditional studio divisions. Only a small percentage of films are produced and financed by the studios, with a possible exception of Disney, who has a very controlled distribution of products created by its independent units, Marvel, Industrial light, Fox studios, Pixar and Walt Disney productions. Each acts as an independent profit center. Also it’s commendable that you’d nurture past talent, once they outgrow their popularity, but that’s just unrealistic. Hollywood is a gig to gig environment. Actors, directors, crew and the millions of names now listed as you watch the credits roll, are all on a “freelance” basis. Even animators at all the studios know that when the latest cartoon is winding up, its time to begin looking for a new job. Child actors are protected, and hopefully are educated that this part of their life is privileged but fragile. Anyway... maybe you were being sarcastic or idealistic. Fact is Hollywood is not all what it appears to be. It’s an environment that can be very unforgiving. And todays Hollywood is global... it’s core strengths are ... Canada ... Atlanta,... United Kingdom... New Zealand and dozens of other countries. All thanks to the advent of digital technologies.

Congress is breaking up big tech and will tell the movie studios to learn their place. Comcast is going to be reduced back to nothing but a cable company while some companies like Google, RU-vid, Facebook, AT&T will become government property with AT&T being reduced to nothing but a telephone service again. Disney will learn its place as nothing but an animation studio with some theme parks and all Disney will have left is their homegrown assets (Animation, Walt Disney Pictures, theme parks, Disney Cruise line, Disney Channel, Disney Theatrical, etc.). All movie stars are going back under contract to one studio at a time and one of the side effects of that will be the return of MGM to its former glory with "more stars than there are in the heavens" again like Clark Gable, Mickey Rooney, Lana Turner, Spencer Tracy, Ava Gardner, and Judy Garland. Keeping stars under contract to one studio at a time is no different than sports athletes signing contracts with their teams and signing with MGM is like signing with the New York Yankees. There is also nothing wrong or unrealistic with nurturing past talent out of loyalty. Tell that to Derek Jeter, John Stockton, John Elway, and Eli Manning.

And I think had he been allowed to do a job he loved and work with someone he really liked. He might have been like Lester, smoking weed on occasion, drinking too much on occasion and maybe never becoming the drug addict which destroyed him.

This is naive…especially if you haven’t had to deal with an addict at this level. He was in a bad way. His own mother didn’t start to look for him until 1969 when his father was dying from a terminal illness!

Old comment, but I think you kinda have to put this in the perspective of the times. First of all, no social media or nearly as much TV and star publicity in the late 50s/60s when this went down. So when people disappeared from the spotlight, they really disappeared. Second, drug addiction was much less understood. Prior to the 70s, Americans were much more conservative and addiction was less prevalent. Things like this just weren’t talked about outside the home. Like you always hear about children of the 60s who grew up with raging alcoholic parents but nobody outside the household knew. Keeping up with the Jones and appearances was much more important in this church going, traditional America. Also, the trend of watching celebrities crash and burn in the media for entertainment really didn’t start happening until the late 70s. The 50’s and 60’s were more interested in just talking about happy, glamorous stories about celebrities. If the media knew everyone in their 20s/early 30s favorite childhood role model was majorly f*cking up, they weren’t going to say anything about it. If they had known, I’m sure they would have cared and maybe he could have gotten help before it was too late.

Walt was a mason. He was all into the occult world and being a mason, exploiting children this way is in their playbook. He was anything but wholesome.

This doesn't surprise me. I have a friend whose dad worked in the industry (and has various celebrity connections) and she told me many years ago about how child stars are abused in Hollywood and that the Disney studio was the worst offender. Kids are regularly passed around like a blunt between executives and others. It's no wonder former child stars are often screwed up.

It's called, "show business" not "show friends". It's not right, but that's the biz for you. Even regular jobs are increasingly treating us as disposable. The factthat he fell into drugs and couldn't "navigate adult life" was his parents' fault. His mother obviously kept pushing him into the biz even when he started questioning it and wanted to try something else. She thought it was beneath him. It's also his fault he chose to use drugs. Unfortunately, Bobby's story isn't the only sad story in Hollywood for child stars. Many former kid actors for one reason or another crash and burn unless they have stable families and are able to find a different way to live after their acting career ends.

It's a shame he did not appear in more non-Disney films as a child.

Raymond Johnson Another absolutely fantastic film of his : “When I Grow Up” , Bobby plays dual rolls in it. Watching “The Window “ , and then “ Treasure Island “, is like watching 2 brothers acting, like totally different. He was an incredible actor. It’s taken almost 5 years, but I managed to find 11 of his movies, and 3 TV episodes. 🙂📻

I agree The Window would be my favorite movie pick for Mr. Driscoll. Sad that the Disney organization is too powerful to challenge on legal issues pertaining to certain abuses I was informed of by a lawyer. I was just a toddler when Disneyland opened in 1954. My family were invited guests due to the fact that my aunt worked for one of the companies involved in the building of Disneyland. So very sad all around.
