Lost DNA - The Truth About Ancient Europeans | Part 1: Origins | Ancient History Documentary
Watch 'Lost DNA - The Truth About Ancient Europeans - Part 2' here: • Lost DNA - The Truth A...
Part 1:
Some 9,000 years ago dark-skinned, blue-eyed hunter-gatherers roamed our forests and plains. Thousands of years later, a new wave of settlers washed into Europe from the Middle East and the Mediterranean, bringing with them a dynamic new technology - farming.
Cutting-edge DNA research is transforming our knowledge of who we are, where we come from and how we got here. This series reveals fascinating and shocking truths about the ancient and medieval inhabitants of Europe. Clad in animal pelts, a hunter stalks his prey in a dense forest. He pauses, and we notice that he is dark-skinned. Then we see his eyes: they are a bright piercing blue. This is Ireland, 7000 BC. A crack team of geneticists based at Trinity College Dublin is now revealing the truth about ancient Europeans, from the hunter-gatherers who stalked and foraged in the wild, to the first farmers, who migrated from the Middle East. Now, a shocking discovery at the ancient passage tomb of Newgrange gives an astonishing insight into the culture and beliefs of Europeans some 5,000 years ago. And our experts reveal how medieval people continued to practice pagan rituals centuries after the coming of Christianity. We venture inside laboratories to watch scientists piece together the past using evidence from ancient bones and skulls, tree rings, soil samples and ice core data. Key scientific institutions, including the Department of Genetics at Trinity College Dublin and the Department of Archaeology and Palaeoecology at Queen's University Belfast, are featured and have granted Tile Films exclusive access to their research. Exciting sequences filmed at these places are combined with archaeological investigations, contributions from historians and other experts, spectacular drone aerial footage and vivid drama re-enactments.

I am not sure what they ment by saying that the genetical combination of blue eyes and dark hair doesn't exist anymore. I have seen people like these including my mother. It is relatively common in Eastern Europe, Turkey and some areas of Asia. The guy they show as an example of the first people crossing to Ireland has blue lenses put. No need for that. genetic studies are a favorite subject of mine, I do enjoy all of the research on-going as well as the information gained in regards to the study of our ancient human past. I have been tested twice, once 20 years or so ago and another a few short years ago, am quite proud of the fact my Y Haplogroup, being of the G2a type, is from the early farmer folk of Neolithic age. The migrations of these peoples went two routes, one along the sea etc. and the other into Europe via the Danube to Rhine etc.

That makes sense, if you were trying to minimize the effort to bury someone. The elaborate tombs containing those bodies in the fetal position tell an entirely different story though. Great effort was expended laying them to rest in tombs lined in large stones, capped with large stones. Certainly there were others that the fetal position may have saved effort, but not the one's shown.

There are different types of "white" skin. The type typical in continental Europe will tan in the sun, whereas the type in North West Europe does not tan (even when they live in Australia, such as myself). Those populations with the highest proportion of Western Hunter gatherer today (Ireland, Scotland, parts of Scandinavia and Estonia) have the highest proportion of non tanning white skin. The repeated assertion that Western hunter gatherers were dark (some assert black) is a myth. The evidence of their living decedents is that they may very well have been the origin of the non tanning white skin type. There is a paper: "Global skin colour prediction from DNA, Hum Genet (2017) 136:847-863" shows how complex the issue is, and, given how fragmentary the ancient DNA is, the assertion of their skin complexion from DNA is political hogwash.

You absolutely don't understand what you're talking about and the "scientist" in this docs are in great part responsible for that. A lot of comments here are wrong and misleading. To simplify, Every human has a particular gene who's for the most part is responsible for skin color. The difference between black people and other "races" of people, is that they possess the original version of this gene when all other people have a mutated version of the same gene. Yes, today, every person with light skin (Europeans and Asians) has the mutated version of that gene. On the other hand, every dark skinned people (in Africa, Asia, Australia, or anywhere else) possess the unmutated version of that same gene. The unmutated version of that gene is dominant over the mutated one which is recessive. Exactly like brown eyes are dominant over any other eye color who are in fact, mutated version of the brown one. That the whole point of the principle of gene dominance and gene recessiveness. The recessives one are always the mutated version of the dominants unmutated one. That's the only reason scientists can say with confidence that early Europeans were dark-skinned simply because they all had the same original dominant unmutated gene as any modern black Africans or any other darker-skinned people around the world TODAY! Absolutely nobody in modern Europe or Asia with white skin possess that skin color gene unmutated. Simple as that! and that include arabs, mediterraneans, sardinians, etc. Many comment here keep saying they believe they are related to this dark blue eyes ancient Europeans because they can tanne during the summer. Totally irrelevent! You simply could not possibly be related to them if you possess the recessive mutated versionn of their dominant unmutated one. It's simply biologicaly IMPOSSIBLE! just stop the nonsense and the ignorence already! Also, it's people like the scientist woman in this documentary who confuse the masse by misleading declaration like saying she think this ancient Europeans looked like today Sardinians. NONSENCE! First, what are this particular physical attributes sole Sardinian possess and nobody else? Second, Sardinians like all every other modern Europeans possess the mutated gene for skin color. Sardinians are over light skinned compared to ANY modern possessor of that unmutated gene. So, what she's talking about? Also, when scientist say that dark skinned and blue eyes combination seem to be extinct doday, what they really means is that it's very rare to find in the modern world somebody with the dominant unmutated gene for skin color and the recessive mutated gene for blue eyes. That all.

They were still in eastern Asia in the Bronze Age, and the earliest of them to make it to the Russian Steppes were 2000 years after this man lived in Ireland. Considering that ocean levels were far lower during the ice ages, and that in addition, Doggerland between northern France and eastern Britain was above sea level and most certainly allowed for migration of peoples, and that there was a quite a bit of dry land between Britain and Ireland, I'd say it entirely possible that not everyone migrated by boat. We may never know how many different groups have lived on these island nations, but the Celts weren't the first ones there although they have been the most prominent and the Gaels, Cymraeg (Welsh), Manx, and Cornish are still living there despite every effort of the English to exterminate or forcibly assimilate them. Isn’t it fantastic that we’re learning so much from DNA! And the computers will reveal all truths, such as, God wants us to destroy capitalism, the wage, and say all people own all things. Acts 2:44. And it’s so obvious, because one farmer can’t own his own farm, perhaps thousands of acres, because he can’t do everything by himself. He needs many helpers, and they should work part time, not for a wage (Haggai 1:6). Because there will be equal wealth worldwide someday so no one is left to starve, because capitalists think it’s right to give all the money to a few rich people, who don’t work! Now that most money is just numbers in computers we can eliminate it for perfect equality. Then all nations will start building only Tower cities connected to maglev Trains, with vertical indoor gardens, and less work (no more curse). And that’s what “all people shall know him (God) means. The hunter gatherer/farmer conflict ever never black and white. Farming rarely 'moved' into areas. Farming and husbandry natural grew when cultures settled into one area due to friendly climate conditions (recent studies prove that humans, animals and even plants adapt around each other and the shift is inevitable as long as cultures are allowed to grow). Migration into previously harsh areas caused cultural conflict, but also the original people turned to permanent settlements because of improving climate conditions and expanding populations. The story is as complex as anything else, and told over hundreds and even thousands of years, and can happen independently around the world.

You will find incredible neolithic sites also in modern France and Spain (a lot of them outstanding but not very well known by common people). What a fascinating history, how Europe changed with the waves of new populations. It has been suggested that the new populations from the Eurasian steppes brought with them the first wave of black plague so the neolithic people that populated Europe in that time were defenseless against that germ, so the people of the steppes had it easier to colonize and stamp their genes all over the place.

Now, maybe they will return to the "Standards of Science and Research" and all can be free to think, Theorize, explore and discover. Freedom of Thought is a cornerstone requirement of Science. It supports other ideas or alternative theories. Graham merely offers another potential and he actually is applying the Standards of Science and "Research" He merely suggests that the Civilization prior to the flood was more advanced, then after the flood it was a restart. @@randomvintagefilm273 You absolutely don't understand what you're talking about and the "scientist" in this docs are in great part responsible for that. Gwydion actually had three sons of his own, by the most messed up way you can imagine, but they were not his heirs. Rhiannon also had another child, Dylan who she managed to have murdered by another Uncle, who also would have been his heir. The logic behind it, and it still works that way in Matrilineal societies, is that you have no way of knowing if the child your wife has is related, but your sister's child definitely is. It works out well for both the woman who is equal in status with her husband, unlike the Patrilineal societies where the woman is regarded as disposable property by her family, and the children, who have multiple male influences raising them, and there is no such thing as an orphan. Prior to DNA testing the only way a man could guarantee his heir was actually his child was to essentially enslave the mother.

Is Wayne Rooney "Caucasian" or "white"? I would question Rooney's "Caucasian" actually, in comparison to a "Sardinian" who is a true "Caucasian". Caucasians are gracile not robust, natural build, small faces, etc... Everything and everyone in Northern Europe came from Southern Europe, except for the last migration into Northern Europe from Central Asia, so I have no idea why Northern Europeans feel so much different then Southern Europeans. right now my arms are dark and my feet are paler then I bet you, but you will still look at me different wouldn't you, just like the people you questioned on the video. I carry skin tone genes related to Neolithic people and I'm not at all naturally dark at all, I tan really good but not naturally dark, so this is a false claim and interpretation of ancient people's skin tone, but again.... because if I don't have the same skin tone genes as Northern Europeans, I am speculated to be "dark" and that's pseudo bias science at its core.

I am not saying that science has nothing to contribute to answering these questions; quite the opposite. But the first step in keeping science useful in these endeavours, is to recognise that it can't answer every question that is worth asking. So, we might be able to figure out /how/ we came to be, but the /why/ is a completely different question, which science is not well-equipped to answer (as far as I can tell).

In winter it's colder because of the tilt of the earth's axis, making it so that less energy per area hits the earth's surface while in summer it's the other way round. this is also why on or near the equator there are no seasons (at least not like in Europe with spring, summer, autumn, winter). there, the angle of the light hitting the earth is always around 90°. reduce that by a small amount and you start to experience seasons. it's that simple. it has nothing to do with distance. why? the earth's radius is 6350ish km. morning and evening you are by definition that much farther from the sun. do you experience seasons during 1 day? or really great temperature changes EACH and EVERY day? no. thus distance is not the main reason for seasons. 44:15 No. That's actually a modern misconception. For the Pharaoh, it was tradition to adopt close relatives or lovers into the family's inner circle thus becoming "brothers and sisters". Then such a "sister" who was not related by birth at all could become one of the wives of the Pharaoh and maybe even the ḥmt nswt wrt (Great Royal Wife). And lo and behold: Even if the Pharaoh married such a "sister", it didn't mean they actually had sex together. Most of times this was to either legitimize authority or to increase the pool of possible candidates because, unlike the Habsburg monarchy, ancient egyptians knew of the danger of incest and did like described to avoid it. No fast forward millennia to usual people like you and me and scientists: "Oh, brother and sister married? That must mean incest" ...... no, not particularly. It can and it definitely happened (heck, it's still happening or should I say: Fritzlning), but it wasn't a thing in ancient egypt.

So the original settlers of Ireland have no genetic relationship to the current Irish population. My question would be what happened to them? Do their descendants exist?

other scientists say that the skin color of these blue eyed people was tannable, not just brown, but changeable so it was whiter in winter and darker in summer due to sun exposure. This combination isn't that rare today, i have it myself. A euro mix with a touch of mideastern.

Almost a great documentary...except calling the Neolithic observatory in Germany "possibly the oldest observatory in the world". Was this an error, deliberate, or what? I say this because Gobleki Tepi and similar sites show evidence of being astronomically aligned, and are MUCH older, between 12,000 to over 14,000 years old! Another issue I have is that trying to equate the brother-sister marriage of New Grange to Ancient Egyptian dynastic inbreeding practices...this is strange, and likely wrong. Why? Because the Neolithic Farmers of Ireland migrated to Ireland 6000 to 7000 years ago, long before the conventional origin of the Egyptian culture. Has anyone compared the DNA of the Neolithic farmers to the ancestors of the ancient Egyptians, or even the various Egyptian dynastic people?

10k years is nothing in geologic time, or even how long modern humans have been considered modern. We've found archaeological sites older than 10k years over in Turkey. They reflect an early transition between hunter gatherer and early farming, but would mostly be still considered hunter gatherers who formed larger communities. It's nearly entirely dependent on the stability of the environment, and this stability has held until even today. Prior to 12k years or so ago, the ice age maximums had severely disrupted settlements in Europe which has created large gaps in available research and evidence.

@43:00 - - Think of the isolation of the villages at that time - - The fact that families slept in real close quarters in one room - - Think of the Egyptian Rulers - - Think of the Kings and queens of Europe and Russia, in recent times, and how inbred they are - - We know that inbreeding is dangerous to the off spring so we don't do it mostly on that basis - - But ancient people were working with a different set of moral guidelines and cultural norms ...

After a few generations they would have seen deformities and weakness. If they suddenly disappeared from the archeology, the greater part of the population may have left as their ruling class (presuming that's what they were) died off or were too disabled to function. On the other hand, these two skeletons prove nothing. It may have been just this one person who resulted from incest. It does not mean it was a way of life.

Don't flatter yourself: there's a huge population of a certain religion that still considers it normal to marry off first cousins. Historically it was a normal practice among commoners all over the world as well, not just the ruling class, because it ensured what little you owned didn't get divided between several families. It also takes many generations of inbreeding to cause something like the Habsburg jaw, if memory serves right, the chance of having a disabled child is something like 1,8% for (healthy) unrelated people and 5% for siblings (so a huge leap, but still extremely low) - think of it this way: we hunted some species almost to exctintion (like the European Wisent), but managed to get them back from just a few individuals to populations of several hundreds or even thousands, and even though they are all closely related, they don't show signs of inbreeding.

@@YamiKisara Yes I am aware of current societies that consider it very natural to follow such a path ... There may not be physical signs like Extreme Bleeding or Jaws BUT how does it effect the brain and ability to think? Could inbreeding be the reason that we were primitive, isolated cave people for so many thousands of years? Are the advancements in technology the result that we finally started to travel, as hunter gathers and mix with distant people who were genetically different from us? Our bodies are just the carriers of our brains and maybe the brain needs that new mixture to move to a higher realm of existence ...

Agree. And maybe shorter lifespans for women (childbirth was risky) and men (building and farming with no Health and Safety legislation) ! So the consequences of incest or wider family interpreting may not have been obvious. Even natural Out- breeding can produce a dud infant. How could they know?
@purrdiggle1470

If 2 separate groups do not mate internally, but each group chooses mates from the other group, wouldn’t their collective DNA eventually appear to be from a single extended family? How could the 2 groups mate generation after generation without eventually mating with distant cousins? How many separate groups would have trade mates with each other in order to avoid statistically mating with cousins? And just how reliable is this kind of DNA analysis? When copies of chromosomes are made the resulting chromosomes will break apart and each part of each chromosome will join together with part of the chromosome’s pair. But they don’t break in even amounts. So, each individual person doesn’t get even amounts of DNA from his 4 grandparents. Over time some of this ancestral DNA can get eliminated from the population. Just because the Mesolithic Irish had DNA that can be traced to the steppes, does not mean that they once had DNA from other regions.

Third cousins are the merest insignificant trace more related than strangers, and fourth cousins are genetic strangers.
@purrdiggle1470
@purrdiggle1470 23 дня назад
@@LynxSouth Doesn't this assume a limited number of common ancestors? If the populations involved are smaller (which is likely the case the farther back in history you go), you'd have a larger number of common ancestors.
@LynxSouth
@LynxSouth 23 дня назад
@@purrdiggle1470 I don't think so. Geneticists figured out the percentages, and there's only so much information that a gene can carry. You have to keep up first- and second-cousin interbreeding for several generations before you get into real trouble.

The irritation & ignorance in the comment section is hilarious: As an Afropean, I know how much the average European loathes dark skin lol - but to witness how upset people are about some dark skinned ancestors millennia ago is hilarious! My granny would have taken pride in originating from the first “Europeans” & of all her other ancestors but it seems she was of exceptional humane mentality for a European
