#LostExplained #LeaveNoQuestionUnanswered
The twenty-fifth chapter in a series of LOST EXPLAINED videos that investigate the mythology and mysteries from the seminal television series LOST. These definitive explanations are based on multiple viewings of the show over the years and careful studying of the details, clues, inconsistencies and contradictions that make up the complex tapestry of what is the greatest television show from the 2000s.
Chapter Twenty-Five gets into full blown theoretical mode! In every sense. Join this deep dive into the mechanics of how and why the island moves, what the donkey wheel is actually doing when it gets pushed, and why there are time discrepancies when coming and going from the island bubble.

Hey man.I love your channel, and all the answers you provide. I was hoping you could answer one question. How did jin make it from the freighter into the Islands' time bubble before the helicopter, at the end of season 4?
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 2 месяца назад
@@UncleFlaynus Thank you 🙂 I addressed the whole Jin within the island bubble in a couple of the videos. Basically, the freighter is within The Island's radius, which is why Sawyer and Juliet can see it on the horizon. When it blows up, Jin is propelled into the water. The Island moves and everything within that radius that is either touching water or land moves with it, including Hydra Island and The Looking Glass Station. And the freighter wreckage moves to the new location too. However, we find out that our Island Losties move backwards through time at this precise jump point. And only predestined time travellers move with that flash, i.e. Faraday’s group on the zodiac raft and Jin floating on debris between Hydra and the main shoreline. They all travel with the light flash because they are needed in the past. This is the reason why Sawyer and Juliet no longer see the smoke on the horizon. It wasn't because the freighter wasn't within the bubble, it was. It's just been left behind in the present day with Richard Alpert and The Others (wherever they moved to in the world). The helicopter doesn't travel with either space or time jumps because they are in the air, not on the ground or the water. And also because they won't be needed in the past for another three years. Hope that clarifies it a little bit.

@sandal_thong8631
@sandal_thong8631 Год назад
Perhaps not the scripts, but I think they made some of it up as they went along, and took fan ideas, theories and questions and turned them into seasons. I think early on someone asked if anything was possible on the island, like time travel, and they started incorporating that idea, first with Desmond getting "unstuck in time" then the time loop. Also, the fan theory that the survivors of Flight 815 were in purgatory (Locke's father thinks he's in hell), and turned that into half of season 6.

I think the most unfulfilled plot element from the entire show was bringing Walt back for season six and having him reconcile with Michael (to help him move on). An episode dedicated to them would have been wonderful, and seeing them in the sideways. We get the implication of this in the Epilogue, but nothing could have beaten seeing it onscreen. I think Damon Lindelof has expressed some regret surrounding these two characters.
@drakenfist
@drakenfist 3 года назад
@@LOSTEXPLAINED108 I totally agree with this. I think having Walt explain the whispers would be far more emotional and interesting rather than Hurley doing a side detour and just seeing Michael like he's suddenly a protagonist of a RPG.
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 3 года назад
@@drakenfist It definitely is the most awkward reveal of season six. I imagine it as a Walt-centric episode with flashbacks to him off-island and how he came to join Widmore's sub. I can see so clearly how emotionally rewarding Walt reconciling with Michael would have been... How cathartic and full circle it would have made Michael's inclusion in season six. It makes me sad to think it never happened this way. If I could change one thing about the show it would probably be this. Making an episode dedicated to Walt and having him there throughout the latter half of the final season as a young man.
@drakenfist
@drakenfist 3 года назад
@@LOSTEXPLAINED108 I think this is why season 6 is so messy. The writers paid so much attention to the sideways and setting that up, that they dropped the ball on a lot of the island stuff. I think that's why season 4 and 5 are so tight, because they all lead to season 6 so well. But season 6 wants to have it's cake and eat it. It wants to be a "denouement" season while also being a plot driven, mystery/conflict season with Jacob and MIB. But that push and pull causes the storytelling to slip because by focusing on Jacob and MIB...the show loses it's character focus as a result.
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 3 года назад
I found S6 extremely rewarding as a 17-episode conclusion to the previous five seasons, but perhaps not as epic as a climatic final season should have been. I'd argue that there is plenty of focus on the characters in S6, and probably not enough focus on action, plot and mythology. And this is primarily because of the sideways. So, I do agree with your assessment that the writers struggled to find the right balance between on-island story and sideways story, even though I still thoroughly enjoy and appreciate both. I honestly believe that all we needed were maybe four to five additional episodes that focused on the main ideological conflict in the present timeline, with some more backstory filled in (Ilana and Claire flashbacks would have been ideal) and original character arcs paid off (Walt and Michael for definite, and even Sawyer got a bit of short shrift come the finale). Most of the creative mistakes or regrets of each season were most likely a result of time restrictions and making decisions on instinct. As I mentioned previously, Damon Lindelof recently spoke about some of his regrets regarding the final season. Had they had more time, or more foresight, they probably would have accounted for the aforementioned elements.

I just finished rewatching season 4 and 5 so this is perfect timing for this video to come out. A few things however that I had noticed and was curious on after watching those seasons and then this video. 1.) Is it possible that the unnatural tides that happened early in seasons 1 are a result of the island syncing up with it's new position? It was an interesting detail that they threw in where the survivors had to move some of there stuff down the beach and one of them said these tides are unnatural. 2.) In season 4, I get that when people were going to and from the island, there were those time shifts. However, why didn't it seem to happen all the time? For example, when Sayid use the small boat to travel back to the island, shouldn't the people on the island have seen him arrive before he left the freighter? That's what happened with the doctor from the freighter. Same thing when Daniel was going to and from the island, the helicopter going back to the freighter with Jake, Kate, Hurly, etc., and when Sawyer jumped out and swam back to the island. 3.) When Desmond was on the freighter having his little adventure, when he called Penny, it was December 24th, 2004. However, a few episodes later (presumably a week or two at most), when Ben left the island, it was October 22nd, 2005 where he ended up. I believe when John Locke later turned the wheel, it was also some time in the future. I feel like this could imply that the Oceanic 6 was only off the island for closer to 2 years rather than 3. I know according to the time on the island, it was 3 years. But is it possible they only experienced 2 years worth off the island? Or did Ben and John jump forward in time because they turned the wheel? I'm assuming it was due to the turning the wheel, but then why does that happen? 4.) This is more on the time loops rather than this video, but doesn't hurt to bring it up. Daniel always said that you can't change the past. What happened, happened. However, when Daniel came back to the island when he saw that Jake, Kate, and Hurly were back, he came back and told them that there's a way to fix it so that the plane doesn't crash. Which led to them detonating the bomb which caused the incident. Now of course, this creates that time loop. However, I can't help but wonder two things. a.) it was said that Dan was very explicit on his time table as they needed to detonate the bomb within a certain time period. At one point in the episodes, someone said it needs to be two hours from now. That makes me think that Dan knew that they were supposed to cause the incident and needed them to follow that path. His actions with talking to Dr. Chang also implies this. He didn't seem to care too much about convincing him, just getting him to think to get him on the path he was supposed to be on. b.) Back in season 3 when we saw Desmond seemingly go back in time after the hatch exploded. He went to a Jewelry store to buy an engagement ring and Eloise told him will not buy the ring and instead was supposed to second guess himself and walk out. However, Desmond did not second guess himself until later and bought the ring. This implies the circumstances changed, but the outcome stayed the same. Throughout the season, he kept seeing flashes of Charley dying so Desmond would save him. Again, Desmond changed the circumstances, the outcome ultimately stayed the same. Daniel told the survivors they could stop the incident by detonating this bomb. He explained how they were the variables. Aka, they could change the circumstances. But ultimately, they caused the incident and thus the outcome was the same. So this leads me to believe that it is possible to the change the past rather than it being completely fixed. However, the outcome will still always end up the same. If you were meant to die, then you would die. If you were meant to go to the island, then you would go to the island. If the plane was meant to crash, it would crash. But how that happens could change. I'm curious your thoughts on these two points. Interestingly enough, it's another argument on free will vs being predestined.
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 3 года назад
To answer your excellent questions! 1.) Yes, the unnatural tides are a side effect of the "bubble", as are the erratic weather patterns. 2.) By the time Sayid, Faraday, and the Oceanic 6, were coming and going from the freighter in the final episodes of the season, the freighter had actually entered the bubble of the island. We know this because our Losties could now see it on the horizon. This is why there is no time dilation for them because they are not crossing the barrier. And even if this were not the case, as long as the precise bearings are followed then you can move back and forth without incident. 3.) When Ben turned the wheel he was sent forward through time by almost a year; his teleportation into the future did not affect anyone else other than him. Whoever turns the wheel gets spat out by The Island and it seems to spit them out during a specific window of time of its choosing (all part of its manipulation of people throughout time). The same thing happening to Locke's group -- being moved back through time to specific points in the island's history -- happens to whoever turns the wheel. You are placed where you need to be in the timeline. Oceanic 6 get off the island at the end of 2004 but don't make it back home until the first weeks of 2005. Ben appears in late 2005 (having missed ten months of real world time). Everyone who left (including Ben) all go back together in late 2007. So, it's closer to three years. 4.) I am familiar with this school of thought. That the past could be altered but the outcome will always be the same because of course correction. I think that would be having our cake and eating it if that were truly possible. Unfortunately, this idea is not compatible at all within the show's rule of "whatever happened, happened". Because if you change one single thing -- even the tiniest of things -- it changes everything. This is the nature of causality. I'm sure you're familiar with the butterfly effect? Let's say Desmond did change things in 'Flashes Before Your Eyes', simply by being aware that he was in the past. The very fact that he was "awake" means he is changing things just by behaving in a different way. This has ripple effects. Speaking to Charlie in the street. Roping in his friend to talk about time travel down the pub. Arguing with Eloise about his destiny on a bench. All of these things are creating more and more ripples in a large stream. However... Eloise knew that the man with the red shoes was going to die, didn't she? Which means she knew Desmond would "awaken" and that they would have this conversation on that bench in which they could observe this event happen. She has foreseen it. Otherwise, how else would she know about the fate of the man in the red shoes? We know that what Desmond experiences in 'Flashes Before Your Eyes' with Eloise is what always happened because when Desmond meets Eloise again at the church in S5 episode '316', he references their meeting and how she ruined his life by telling him to go to the island. Which means their 1995 conversation always happened. Desmond's unstuck consciousness had that interaction with Eloise in 1995. He simply didn't remember it until *after* he turned the key and got exposed to the light. A pre-fail safe Desmond would only recall breaking up with Penny by The Thames after being belittled by her father and drowning his sorrows down the pub. He would not remember the Eloise part of it. (Note how he gets struck in the head by the cricket bat at the end, which no doubt gave him a concussion and confused remembrance of that day). This is why it is established before the Eloise sequence that he is already having doubts about himself and his relationship with Penny. Nothing is changed. Meanwhile, Eloise knew to be there at that moment because, as mentioned in my Widmore/Hawking video, the island was guiding her too. She could only be this "Temporal Policeman" if she had flashes or visions of her own to guide her. The Island needed her to be there in 1995 to await the arrival of Desmond's unstuck consciousness from the future so she could ensure that his path to the island is cemented and the past remains intact. This idea that the past could be (or was) changed, even slightly, would mean viewing time as being more malleable than the show ever purported it to be. Changing even the tiniest thing in the past leads to the infamous butterfly effect, which spirals outwards into a chain reaction of causes and effects. So, no small change can ever be small. This would take us into string theory; a notion only teased the first time around when we watched the sideways in S6 (but we know what the sideways turned out to be in the end). The show doesn't suggest or validate the idea that multiverses can exist. Faraday said the only hope they would possibly have of being able to change the past was by doing something big like detonating a hydrogen bomb. Which they carried out, and it only ensured the timeline. If a nuke couldn't remotely change the flow of the river then Desmond stood no chance. There is one past. One future. One timeline. Like Jacob says: "It only ends once." And Jack confirms this in the finale: "There are no shortcuts, no do-overs. What happened, happened." You can't change the songs that are on the record, only the order in which you listen to them. That is what we see Desmond doing. Remembering the songs in a non-linear order. Whatever happened, happened.

@@LOSTEXPLAINED108 Thank you for your response! 1.) I think it's funny that there was this detail in season 1. I'm curious if the writers had in mind the reason originally, or if they just added it for mystery and would later explain it (which is the explanation we got of course). 2.) I didn't pick up on the freighter being in view and thus being in the bubble. That makes a lot of sense for my question then. 3.) That's what I was thinking but wasn't completely sure so thank you for the clarification. 4.) that makes sense. That's what I would I always go back to, that regardless of what it seemed, that's just what always happened and nothing ever changed. What happened, happened. But it was an interesting thought with being able to change circumstances but not the outcomes either way. And I do find that some of the scenes were ambiguous so that the viewer can have thoughts like this and to question it. One scene I had remembered while reading your response however was the scene with Desmond and Charlie in "Flashes before your eyes". I don't remember what episode, but if I remember correctly, I believe there was another flashback that was the same scene but without Desmond. @@tratixmusic8884 In regards to that Charlie scene, if I'm not mistaken, you are thinking of the flashback from 'Greatest Hits' in which Charlie is busking in the street and gets caught in the rain then happens upon Nadia being mugged in an alleyway. It's a similar scene but a different location in London on a different day (judging by Charlie's entirely different wardrobe). So whether he or the bartender get hit in the head could get worked out the way Charlie didn't die from a crossbow bolt (though the author called them false-visions), or people's memories could be altered, like Daniel Faraday creating a new memory of the Hatch in Desmond. I think they said we don't know why Desmond was in prison, (he said not following orders) but assumed it was for desertion, because it was in his nature to run away. @LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 2 месяца назад
I don't think so. Pushing the wheel doesn't usually mean time travel, only that The Island will move location. The reason why our Losties are time travelling in Season Five is because the wheel had been dislodged and got jammed moving back and forth on the spoke. This kept the time travellers skipping across the record. It was a one-off effect of the wheel slipping off its axis.

Protectors are absolutely killable, as long as The Source allows it (usually once the protector have passed on their power to the next person in order to keep the lineage going). It's the same with candidates. They are "allowed" to die when they have fulfilled their purpose. We see this with Michael, Locke, Sayid, Jack, etc.

I have a question... You said that the island most certainly jumped when Oceanic 815 crushed. If that's the case, shouldn't there be discrepancies in time between the island and outside world? Ben takes Juliet to The Flame immedietly after the plane crushes. They see the news about the disappearance of Oceanic 815 and there is a live feed of Richard showing them Juliet's sister. And Richard hears Ben's commands as he speaks. The time on the island and on the outside world seems to be in sync. How is that possible? BTW, I love all your videos!

We know that satellite signals to and from the island transmit in real time, hence why those satellite phones were so essential to communicating with the freighter. The TV signals are via satellite too, so we can assume that they could monitor and interact with those outside broadcasts in sync with "normal world" time (let's call it NWT). The Island could be ahead or behind NWT within its bubble, but able to interact with the past or future. We see this happen when the Sat-phones go down in Season Four and they are forced to use Morse code to communicate. Our Losties on the beach are talking with people on the freighter in the past. Also, my suggestion that the island jumped after the fail-safe was turned was merely a speculative possibility. According to an answer that Damon Lindelof gave during a Comic Con, he claims that the island did not move during that event. I hope this helps!

Great video again. A couple of questions. If the Island is regularly changing location, does this mean that our time-travelling LOSTies are not only in a different time from those who stayed in the present, but are also in a completely different place, ie, the Island is in totally different parts of the world in all these different time-jumps, so that when Jack, Hurley etc "disappeared" from the Ajira flight, they not only went back 30 years in time, but they also "teleported" possibly thousands of miles through space? My other question - what's the deal with the Season One beach scene involving Sayid and Hurley listening to "Moonlight Serenade"? It's suggested that it's a radio signal from around 60 years earlier. Does that mean that the Island was momentarily in 1944, or is it simply a very old radio signal that they've somehow detected?
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 3 года назад
As always, you ask the most thoughtful questions! In regards to the island's positioning between those two time periods... There's no way to know for sure but I do have a take on it. The Island is bound to appear in places that it has previously occupied (there are only so many pockets in the ocean that it can flash to after all). So, it is conceivable that where The Island appears in 2007 is the exact same location it was back in 1977, during the events of The Incident. This would make sense. So, when Jack's group get sucked back in time from Ajira, they remain within the same spatial island bubble as Ajira but in a different time. As for the 'Moonlight Serenade' that Hurley and Sayid listen to on the beach... I think it was just the writers way of planting the idea that The Island might have an unusual relationship with time. The song could genuinely be coming from somewhere across the sea. Sayid mentions: "Radio waves at this frequency bounce off the ionosphere. They can travel thousands of miles. It could be coming from anywhere." And we hear this same song on the car radio during Jack's flashback in S3 opener 'A Tale of Two Cities'. However! Radio waves are a type of electromagnetic radiation, so they are moving at the speed of light. And we know radio transmissions to and from the island can be affected by the bubble that surrounds the land mass (although not ones via the satellite phones), which means that a radio on the island could potentially pick-up scrambled transmissions from another time period from on the island or elsewhere in the world. It's definitely within the realms of LOST logic. Have you seen the movie 'Frequency' with Dennis Quaid? That film plays with this idea more in-depth -- how radio transmissions can cross time barriers -- and is a pretty solid time travel thriller, with cool LOST vibes (and a couple of familiar faces from the show).

@@LOSTEXPLAINED108 - thanks. So, can we say that the time periods that our LOSTies flashed to were limited by needing to be periods where the Island was in the same location? It makes sense, although I've always assumed, given that Locke appeared in the time when Yemi's beechcraft flew overhead, that the Island must've been just off the coast of Africa at that moment.
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 3 года назад
@@drewc.4061 I agree that when the Nigerian beechcraft crashed on The Island it was most likely because The Island itself was off the coast of Africa somewhere, possibly in the South Atlantic. I don't know if I'd take the theory about 2007 and 1977 spatial locations being in the same place and apply it to all the time shifting. It just makes sense for that particular example because of the specific separation between Jack's group and the rest of the Ajira passengers. The plane is in the same place on the map, but its people are in different times. I suppose you could make the argument that every single time flash Locke's group experience on The Island places them in the same specific Island location (e.g. 1954 island is in the same place as 1974 island and 1988 island) but in a different time period. However, this might have some holes in it. We would really have to track where The Island is during S5 and S6 at various points to test that theory. It's probably easier to assume that when Locke's group are flashing back through time they are probably also moving through space to wherever The Island was located at different points around the globe throughout history. Because the light operates on a fourth dimensional level, the limitations of physical space aren't really as much of an issue. The only thing we can argue for sure is that The Island shifts to predetermined points in space-time because certain people have to find its shores at specific times in history (e.g. The Black Rock, U.S. Army, Rousseau's team, Oceanic 815ers, the Kahana, etc.)

The satellite phones could be configured. This allowed them to change their operating frequency, which could compensate for electromagnetic and radio-frequency interference in certain parts of the spectrum. They could communicate in real time when fully connected via satellite, hence their importance. However, because the freighter was outside of the electromagnetic bubble, it created a "drift". A sort of decoherence between the syncing of time between island and freighter. This was in flux because the freighter was moving closer and closer to the island. So, when connecting via other methods, the drift became more apparent such as with the morse code telegraphing. Quote from Damon Lindelof: "According to the rules of our show, a communication between sat phones is not affected by temporal distortion, but if you were to send a radio broadcast and/or a telegraph message, it would be affected by temporal distortion."

Yes, you're correct. The hieroglyphs do translate as "underworld". DHARMA have been studying the Egyptian history on the island, as evidenced by their interest in the frozen donkey wheel and Horace Goodspeed's house being built adjacent to the old summoning chamber for the smoke monster. The hieroglyphs on the timer could be seen as an homage to the the long dead but clearly dominant ancient culture on the island. Radzinsky's little in-joke. As for why it's called The Swan, it's most likely because of its shape. Think about the design of the station. It has that iconic hatch tunnel at one end -- like a long neck -- and a large bunker below -- like the body of a bird. If we viewed it side on, it would resemble a rudimentary shape of a swan.

Is it really teleporting or it's slowly drifting ? If it would move all the time all over the place then Ben moving the island in the season 4 finale would have been pointless. If it moved all the time all over the place, people would notice if it suddenly turned from day to night or if a day was suddenly just 3 hours long, because it moved to a place where the sun was already going down. But that doesn't happen.
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 2 месяца назад
Yes, it is teleporting. Remember that Eloise explains this in the Lamp Post station. There are hotspots all over the world that it jumps to. Which is why our Losties have to travel through a particular corridor, at a particular time, in order to fly into its new location. If it was drifting then The Lamp Post station wouldn’t be set up to track the jump points like it does. The wheel makes The Island move unnaturally in emergencies, which is why it rarely gets deployed. It is essentially replicating and synthesising the natural process but allowing people to move it instead. I explain the logic in the video of how the island’s “bubble time” works. When Ajira flies into the bubble it goes from day to night in a flash. Time behaves differently within the bubble, also demonstrated by the way time on the freighter doesn’t sync up exactly with time on The Island in Season Four.

@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 2 месяца назад
Yes, The Island is in the present but that is always relative to whatever is outside of its radius. We know time flows differently depending on how you enter the time bubble surrounding it. That is why the freighter doctor's body can wash up on the beach the morning before he is killed on the freighter the next night. This is also why they needed satellite phones in order to interact with the freighter as it is the only peer-to-peer signal available that helps them communicate in real time regardless of any discrepancies between "time zones". Radio comms either get scrambled or experience significant lag. The Island doesn't move after MiB is killed because The Source is turned off, remember? So, The Island's ability to shift location is temporarily down. This bubble is invisible to the eye but it keeps The Island hidden and protected, which is why you can only enter it through a specific corridor otherwise you won't get there at all and never find it. Think of it like The Heart of The Island in the bamboo forest. Unless you know the corridor (like the protector does) you will never find it, but that won't stop it from getting sunlight and rain and all the other elements.

Sometimes the sudden weather shifts could be a sign of The Island having moved and syncing up with the environment, but not always. That's just how weather can be in places like the South Pacific. Sudden storms can come and go as soon as they start. I think the light needs to be on for The Island to "move". Without it, it just starts to crumble and fall apart into the ocean. The reason why people don't see a vivid jump cut from day to night is never explained in the show but we can assume it is because The Island bubble adapts and slowly syncs up with the new location so that islanders don't sense the inertia or change in temperature or light. Although some characters do comment on the little details related to these shifts. Faraday claims that "the light doesn't quite scatter right" when he first lands on The Island; Charlie mentions "Is this normal? Day turning into night? End of the world type weather?" in the Pilot; and Sayid says "Everything is getting washed out to sea. This can't be normal. The tide shifting so suddenly, rising in so short a time." There are other lines like this that draw attention to the environment being unusual or unnatural.

By the way, on Comic-Con 2008, Damon Lindelof said that the Island didn't move during the purple sky event ;) I know that this video series is strictly using the show as the true canon, but I'm just adding that. Cool video nonetheless! Fully agree on the time dilation issues with Michael and Tom. Especially the amount of time it would get for Michael and Walt to hit a shipping lane. Grandma Dawson says they've been gone for two months, but I think it's possible that the dilation threw them a bit backwards in time and they just laid low for a bit until revealing themselves for their family. Also the fact that Tom says that "some of us" can travel to and from the Island suggest he knows a thing or two about these things. I also think that Tom travelled from New York to Tallahassee to find Anthony Cooper. That would take some time as well, but it had to have happened in this time period. As well as taping over the Red Sox tape since it was complete when Ben showed him in "the Glass Ballerina" and Tom needed to be back before Locke blew up the sub. So Tom probably did that thing too. So he was pretty busy! Also, about the Island's original location. Fully agree of the placement near Tunisia. But my theory is that the Island existed in a lake IN Tunisia. Namely Chott el Djerid, a giant salt lake in Tunisia which would have the Island in the middle. It's a dry lake now, but I imagine it being full of water back in ancient times and the awe people would feel when they entered the "dome" and saw the lush, green Hawaiian (heh) island in the desert. Chott El Djerid is also Luke Skywalker's home place location (the co-creators being Star Wars fans) and the closest city is Tozeur. The city Ben visits in "The Shape of Things to Come". And when the Island moved, the location became this flat and depressing salt lake.

I hadn't heard that Comic-Con quote. Is there a specific source for that? I was initially going to include thoughts about how The Island came to be its own land mass, which isn't too dissimilar from your own take, but it would be veering into full blown fan fiction and add to an already theory-heavy video. I subscribe to the notion that the island was part of the land mass of Tunisia back when the Pangea supercontinent connected everything in the late Paleozoic era. But The Island broke away from the mainland following tectonic shift and continental drift to form its own separate place in the Mediterranean Sea. As for your comments about Tom Friendly and Anthony Cooper... your timing is fortuitous! I'm literally exploring that plot point as part of the next video, which is about "the magic box" and its various meanings.

I don't like to ignore statements like that but it's not the first time I've had to choose between the show's internal logic and Darlton's numerous off-screen statements. In most cases I choose to trust the tale, not the teller. My rule of thumb is this: if it's a statement they made during season six or after (when the mythology was finalised and set in stone by what they presented in S6), I'm more likely to use it or adhere to it. If it was made before then, I always take it with a pinch of salt. One could argue that explaining the unexplained in LOST is all fan fiction to some extent. 65% of this channel is giving the creators of the show the benefit of the doubt that they actually put as much thought into their answers as we have with our deductions and theories. After all, they had a network TV schedule on their backs whilst developing this huge, complex narrative. Whereas we have all the time in the world to make sense out of it; mistakes and all.

When Ajira plane arrives on the island, we can hear the numbers of Rousseau at the cockpit's radio. Yet, the landing runway is already build. Am I missing something there ? It looks like the pane lands before the end of S3
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 7 месяцев назад
The transmission that Ajira hears is the original automated voice recording set up by DHARMA repeating the numbers (that brought the French team to the island in the first place), which Rousseau later replaced with her own distress call. When Rousseau turned off her old transmission at the radio tower in 2004, this presumably reset the broadcast to its original DHARMA numbers broadcast. Either that or someone intentionally switched the old broadcast back on. Some have also speculated that the DHARMA radio transmission is travelling through time in that moment much like the music signal that Hurley and Sayid picked up on their reconstituted radio in Season Two, which is also a possibility. Team Jack had only just been pulled back in time to the 70s, so a time displacement signal coming from the 70s would sync up to that.

The Ajira plane is momentarily caught in the time flash when it hits the bubble of the island. Jack, Kate, Sayid and Hurley are teleported off during that flash, and Ajira arrives inside the bubble of the island in 2007. We know that it is 2007 for all sorts of reasons but mainly because the show tells us that multiple times lol. They are not flying through the past when they arrive. It is 2007 (their objective present day) and we don't see them flash or "jump" again. Which means the numbers broadcast heard by Lapidus in the cockpit was happening for one of the aforementioned reasons. The most popular theory being that radio signals on the island tend to bounce around time, as evidenced on several occasions. And considering Team Jack just got sent to the past of 1977 (back when the numbers recording was still playing) it's feasible that the plane radio was picking up the broadcast from the past. We know that radio signals are affected by temporal interference, which is why the Sat phones were so important for communicating in 2004. But it also could just be that someone else on the island (possibly Claire) turned it back on years ago.
@Magnack13
@Magnack13 7 месяцев назад
thanks for your answers. Yeah if we consider that as an interference, they can hear the message coming from the past in 2007... but eh that's dull.. And why would Claire would do such a thing (or anyone else). But seeing the landing runway is curious to me as we hear the numbers@@LOSTEXPLAINED108

What do you mean Ajira was flying through the past though? You mean when they entered the bubble of The Island and it goes from night to day? I mean, technically the plane has time travelled a little bit in that moment because there is a clear time discrepancy between them flying at night to arriving in the daytime (but it's a matter of hours or days, not decades). So, Ajira is never actually flying through 1977, it's always in the year 2007. The light flash they hit at the edge of the event window is what transports Team Jack back to 1977 while Ajira simply enters The Island's field of gravity, but still in 2007. You see the finished runway because it is the year 2007, not 1977 or 2004 or any other year. And the Ajira group do not "time travel" in any way once they are in the island's snow globe. Does that make sense? Ultimately, an answer being dull is immaterial. All that matters is whether or not the answer fits and is possible based on in-show information, right? It has to make sense within the internal logistics of how we have seen things work previously. The time travelling radio signal theory is plausible on that basis. I'm not saying I necessarily subscribe to it myself but it's a decent explanation. As for Claire switching on the numbers broadcast... well, why wouldn't she reactivate the radio tower? She was left behind and alone on the island. We don't know what happened to her in those three years other than the fact that she had skirmishes with The Others at the temple and was kept company by the MiB in different forms. It's perfectly plausible that she wanted to try and use the radio tower to communicate with the mainland or a ship, or to check if the freighter was still out there somewhere. Remember, she had no idea of what happened to everyone. There are any number of reasons that she might have gone back to the radio tower to try and do what Rousseau did 16 years ago. It's also plausible that the MiB asked her to switch it on to act as a beacon to guide back in the remaining candidates for when they eventually returned. Lots of scenarios would work for me there, and none of them require time travel or timelines or complicated physics. Just plain old characters doing believably motivated things off-screen.

The wheel turning (and slipping off its axis) is the catalyst for predestined time travel. The people bouncing through different time periods are the only ones to travel because they are the only ones who appeared across different points in the past. It's a whatever happened, happened scenario. So, if we look at the timeline from a chronological POV, 2,000 years ago time travellers appeared in the jungle -- Sawyer, Juliet, Jin, Faraday, Miles, etc -- but someone like Richard didn't appear then. Therefore, in the future, only that group of people (and anyone else travelling through time with them) can appear in the past. Because it already happened. Dharma did not use the wheel ... they noticed it on a xray and never drilled any furter and then they build that chamber on top where you are not supposed to put metal.

Yet somehow a polar bear got from The Island to the Tunisian desert. The epilogue to the series reinforces the idea that DHARMA used a polar bear to enter the tunnels (most likely via the well entrance) and push the wheel. That was the point of training them in the cages.

The much simpler explanation is that the Island developed in different locations in the multiverse and they are jumping realities.
@LOSTEXPLAINED108

But there are no multiverses in LOST. There is only one timeline. And branching universes/multiverses theory is way more complicated than “whatever happened, happened”.

Two points: one, an understanding of quantum mechanics and the probabilities involved will better explain how the island moves. Two, stop trying to understand Lost as the whole point is that you cannot and will keep being Lost. The show is actually an insult to humanity, showing how the majority don’t get it (are lost) because they’re too busy spinning personal agendas and following peer-pressure driven narratives coupled with an average IQ of 98!

If we should stop trying to understand LOST then maybe you shouldn't lead your comment with a contradictory claim in which you say that a person can figure out how the island moves by understanding quantum mechanics. Because surely that would fall into the camp of someone trying to understand the show. And if LOST is "an insult to humanity", as you so overstated, then you should definitely stop looking up analysis/explainer videos for a TV show that ended almost 14 years ago. I think you should take your own medicine there, Peter.

Well, that’s inevitable with a show like this. I’m extrapolating ideas from the show and hypothesising further. Filling in some of the mythological gaps with speculations and deductions. Because it’s LOST. Read the ‘About’ page on this channel. I state up front my intentions there.

An ending at the end of season 4 would have been much easier to explain.

I disagree with that. Without the answers provided in season five and six, we would have very little actual context to help us explain things like the light, the monster, the nature of fate, the supernatural events on the show, etc. How could any of the mythology have been explainable based on the events of season four finale?

It was back in the day when I didn’t have recording equipment. But all of these older videos have been entirely revoiced (with my own voice) and remade in better quality (and feature A LOT more detail). They have been combined together as part of a six part video series called The Theory of Everything, which you can watch here: ru-vid.com/group/PL5iTj9psbPrNovFOg4pJJIyxiLAv2WAKB

The video I started using my own voice onwards from is the video on the pregnancy crisis from about two years ago. But the link I shared with you in the previous comment will take you to the main explainer series. Just give it a click and you’ll be in the right place.

Lost was great until Sawyer and Kate got locked up in cages. Around the time people figured out it was Purgatory and the writers had to start adding pseudo science.
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 3 года назад
Did you watch past season three? Usually people who say they were in purgatory the whole time and disparage the show accordingly never actually watched seasons four to six. Or they stopped around the cages then dropped in to watch the series finale. Because it wasn't all purgatory and they were not dead the whole time. I will make a video in the future that deals with this misconception and why critics of the show reach for it in order to dismiss the show outright. Every sci-fi show uses pseudo-science. 'Star Trek' -- the longest running and most popular sci-fi series of all time -- used pseudo-science every week.
