It was sold just for the gold value as no one really knew what it was at the time. The man that bought it noticed the name on the clock dial and started to do research and found out it was one of the lost Fabregé eggs which a large portion were purchased by random Americans after the revolution.

@@iamf6641 Actually no British museum owns any faberge egg. The Queen used to own two faberge eggs before she passed the mosaic egg and the colonnade egg.

But they're pretty sure that the other 5 were destroyed during the chaos of the revolution. The 2 mentioned are the ones they KNOW survived the revolution, but don't know where they are know.

They're all out there my friend. It would be a huge shame to see such beautiful masterpieces lost to time.

The two missing are the necessaire egg and the cherub with chariots. There are pictures of the necessaire egg it’s gold with Louis xiv decorations on it. Unfortunately the cherub with chariot has no clear picture but there is a picture that shows it’s reflection on the glass vitrine it was in.
