Lost History : The George Washington Masonic Cave

Long before George Washington became the commanding general of the Continental Army and then the President of The United States, as a young man he surveyed the forest and fields on the frontier of the British Colony of Virginia in what is known as the Shenandoah Valley. In the year 1747, he helped survey a tract of land for a friend that was then named "The Cave Farm".
He revisited the farm and his friend a year later in 1748. It is this visit and what he may have done in a nearby cave that has become the center of a long line of local Masonic lore and legend.
In this video, I venture to the cave with my friend Dr. Jason Williams. Dr. Williams has researched the early life of George Washington and specifically his association with a secret cave that was once used by some of this country's first and most powerful Freemasons. The cave was also used by Military Officers/Freemasons to conduct meetings during both the French and Indian War (1754-63) and the American Revolution (1775-83).
About Aquachigger:
I enjoy metal detecting for historical items like gold coins, relics, silver coins, and other buried treasures. I also metal detect for gold and silver nuggets and even meteorites. I like to make videos that promote my choice of lifestyle that includes outdoor adventure,
metal detecting, yapping, searching for river treasure, SCUBA diving, exploring abandoned places, hiking, caving, caring for animals and pets, and observing the things outdoors that often go unnoticed by most people who are not familiar with outdoor adventures and nature. I keep my RU-vid "Aquachigger" channel family-friendly and hope you subscribe if you like my style.

This was a very educational caving trip I just had with my friend Dr. Jason Williams. Even though I grew up in Jefferson County, West Virginia, and very near where this cave is located, I had never heard the full story of the cave or how involved George Washington was in the local area. The first plantation George Washington built as a very young man was located just a few miles from where I grew up and I had only heard of this fact in very brief and incomplete whispers. In this video, Jason gives me a very thorough history of the George Washington Masonic Cave and a great early American colonial history lesson overall. You can find Dr. Williams's book "Brought To Light" which he recently authored here at this Amazon affiliate link. I think it would make a great Christmas present! amzn.to/3F4Ta65 Please keep in mind this cave is located on private property that is posted, fenced, and gated. At this time it is not open to the public. Thanks Beau. I'm going to look for his initials he engraved on a stone here in Ohio. He was doing surveying for the Western Reserve Co. at the time and was still an officer for Brittan. There's very little to go on. One person did figure out it's location but wouldn't reveal it. Like his thinking. But our history of back then is cabins and trails with forts sprinkled around. Not much of which can still be seen even in part. So any opportunity to physically see it is always an amazing feeling. One I'm looking forward to. Thanks for helping to keep our history alive. 🇺🇸

An interesting bit about the Masons that I’ve heard: in my family’s hometown, the founding family and descendants had a pretty sizable house, mill, and other facilities. During the Yankee invasion, as they marched on Knoxville (iirc), they were going to burn the mill; but the master of the house (who was said to be a Mason) met with the leader of the forces (who was also a Mason) and exchanged Masonic rites. The soldiers abated and everything was copacetic.
@johnsammartino6344
@johnsammartino6344 Год назад
There is no exchange of rites between Masons. They would of verified that each was a Mason by certain words or signs or perhaps a grip or token. Once verified the two would be obligated to do no harm to the other if in their power to prevent harm or damage to one or the others person, family, or property. Many fights, treaties and wars or battles were prevented or stoped simply because leaders or representatives of opposing parties in history where identified to each other as Masons. So, it would not be far fetched to see two people each from opposing sides come together in a lodge to negotiate or being friendly or at least civil to each other. If captured and taken as prisoners they would also of been granted more privileges. Back then the rank and title of a Master Mason opened a lot more doors in every country then I think it does today.
@Dank-gb6jn
@Dank-gb6jn Год назад
@@johnsammartino6344 “rites” is used to mean a handshake, token exchange, a whispered word in the ear, etc. in this context. Think of it as “for lack of a better word/term”.

My family owned the whole of Shenandoah Valley was first owned by my family back in the 1700's we had corner stone's and each of our ggggg grandfather had each one of his boy's claim a 160 acre section. They actually still have a few of the original stones that were stacked a minimum of 2ft lol. I don't know why they chose that height but I have also heard of people moving them when Georgia Washington was a young man he surveyed the area and marker's were replaced with actual sections. Eventually they sold the land's and moved into Webster County West Virginia It's no wonder George married into wealth he knew who's father owned the best land.
