Lost in Space is an American science fiction television series, created and produced by Irwin Allen, which originally aired between 1965 and 1968.
The series follows the adventures of the Robinson's, a pioneering family of space colonists who struggle to survive in the depths of space.
The show ran for 83 episodes over three seasons, the first of which was filmed in black and white.
On October 16, 1997, the United States is gearing up to colonize space. The Jupiter 2, a futuristic saucer-shaped spacecraft, stands on its launch pad undergoing final preparations. Its mission is to take a single family on a five-and-a-half-year journey to an Earth-like planet orbiting the star Alpha Centauri.
The Robinson family consists of Professor John Robinson (Guy Williams), his wife Maureen (June Lockhart), and their three children: Judy (Marta Kristen); Penny (Angela Cartwright); and Will (Billy Mumy). The family is accompanied by U.S. Space Corps Major Donald West (Mark Goddard). The Robinson's and Major West are to be cryogenically frozen for the voyage, and they are set to be unfrozen when the spacecraft approaches its destination.
Dr. Zachary Smith (Jonathan Harris), Alpha Control's doctor, is revealed to be a saboteur working on behalf of an unnamed nation. After disposing of a guard who catches him aboard the spacecraft, Smith reprograms the Jupiter 2's B-9 environmental control robot (voiced by Dick Tufeld) to destroy critical systems on the spaceship eight hours after launch. Smith becomes trapped aboard at launch, however, and his extra weight throws the Jupiter 2 off course, causing it to encounter asteroids.
This, plus the robot's rampage, causes the ship to prematurely engage its hyperdrive, and the expedition becomes hopelessly lost in the infinite depths of outer space. Smith's selfish actions and laziness frequently endanger the expedition, but his role assumes less sinister overtones in later parts of the series.
The open and closing theme music was written by John Williams, a composer notable for creating the music for the film Star Wars. Williams was listed in the credits as "Johnny Williams".
Season three featured a new score which was considered more exciting and faster tempo. The opening music was accompanied by live action shots of the cast, featuring a pumped-up countdown from seven to one to launch each week's episode.
In 1998, New Line Cinema produced a film adaptation. The 1998 film includes a number of homages to the original television series.
On October 10, 2014, it was announced that Legendary TV was developing a new reboot of Lost in Space for Netflix with screenwriters Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. On June 29, 2016, Netflix ordered the series with 10 episodes. The series debuted on Netflix on April 13, 2018. It was renewed for a second season on May 13, 2018.
This Video is not targeted for children. It is aimed at adults who remember the original series and it's reruns.

We were so lucky as kids in the 70s. Reruns of many programs like this from the previous decade. We were glued to the TV after school got out. In our TV sets you could go to Gilligan's Island, Lost in Space, Johnny Quest, Pettycoat Junction, Brady Bunch, Space 1999, Lassie, Partridge Family, Star Trek, Hogans Heroes, Leave it to Beaver.....on and on. We always anticipated a hidden unknown new episode but really filming for these shows had ended before we were born.

So were we in the 90's. I watched all the 60's star trek , plus shows from the 70's which were then, old to me. It is a different world now. We were on the beginning of the computer age and digital and internet and wow..... I bet the technological world doesn't change as much in the next 100 years as it has in the past 20-25 years. Not sure what more they can do with our level of tech... unless there is a major breakthough.. they way jet power was compared to propeller. One thing is for sure... conventional travel though space will not get us anywhere. Crazy how far some of the distances are. But... can you imagne knowing that the universe is finite. Despite all that space.. one would always wonder what was on the other side of the edge. Will someone read this comment in 10,000 years and say... what... they thought the universe was infinite... that's like saying the earth was flat. Silly people!

I remember all of those shows (except Leave It To Beaver and Lassie) when they were new. Space 1999, I think, was actually produced in the 1970s, as was The Partridge Family.

You were "lucky" to be glued to the TV? No wonder baby boomers are all morbidly obese. In the 90s as kids we actually ran around outside, played outside, played sports, rode our bicycles, etc. TV was there too but we rarely seemed to watch it. Except on a rainy day. Though even then, rain is just rain, it's only a bit of water. Put on a coat and you can still run around in the rain and play football (i.e. FOOTBALL football, not American football (handegg), FOOTBALL football football).

If you listen real closely to the notes in the 1968 version of Lost In Space, you'll hear the beginnings of John Williams' most popular work: the theme to Star Wars. Prior to scoring Star Wars, Mr. Williams scored two films for Irwin Allen, The Poseidon Adventure and The Towering Inferno; both came out in the '70's. The '65 version was okay, but the '68 version not only rocked, it was also a prelude of things to come for movie themes he would score in the years to come. One more note: when he was a guest conductor with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra many years ago, he was well loved by the audience, and also treated us to encores of his works.

So here's the thing: I was born in 93 and have only really watched the Netflix Lost in Space show which I thought was just a bunch of cliches and bland writing and direction. I haven't watched the 60s show but going from what I've seen in this video alone, while the 1960s cliches are there (like the strong circles motiv in the earliest openings) it looks fun! I have a basic rule when it gets to TV shows; they need to be entertaining. You can give me goofy dialogue and bad special effects and it won't bother me so long as the story and/or characters are engaging. This show already sold me when they mentioned bullshitting their way back in time; I don't buy the science but I buy that it sounds like a fun and engaging plot!

That was the one that I remember best. I think that you should include that year or else change the date to 1966 so that others won’t be disappointed.

It wasn't in prime time for that long. It was shown regularly in re-runs over that time period, and these were usually in the afternoons after school, or sometimes on the weekends at various day time slots. The same was done with Batman and Star Trek.

As someone who played french horn, trumpet, and baritone horn in symphonic bands and wind ensemble the themes were exceptional. Hearing the trumpet lead is wonderful. The flute and piccolo part is beautiful. The french horn is awesome. And to hear the tuba in conjunction with the string bass is what sets it in motion. The second theme was very well written with the countdown number starting from 7. The flute, piccolo, and bells played part is absolutely striking..The french horn soli is cool..I m a band theme fan for sure. I would love to see the written score to both..

I grew up watching Lost in Space in the 60s. That first theme almost brings me back to that time: sitting in front of the TV ( black and white ) with my Will Robinson shirt on , mom in the kitchen cooking, little sis sitting next to me. Oh God, if I had one wish it would be to go back there again and start over . They all passed away. Life can be so beautiful yet so sad !!!!

@@alexsandusky1337 I'm not and I remember when Lost in Space premiered. The first season, (1965-1966), was indeed Black and White because there were still not that many folks who could afford Color TV's at the time. The next two seasons, (there were only three seasons of the original show), were shot in Color. That show was truly a lot of fun but then nearly ALL of the shows in the 60's were a lot of fun. It really was a great time to be young.

How could it not? Both themes were written by John Williams who went on to compose the original scores for well over 200 movies including Jaws, Star Wars, Superman: The Movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark, ET: The Extra Terrestrial, Schindler's List, Jurassic Park and Harry Potter to name a few.

I remember I was staying with my grandparents one weekend. They didn’t have internet or any cable just an antenna. One of the channels we got was a station called Metv and showed classic tv shows. It was a Saturday night me and my grandpa were watching that channel and this show came on and it forever gave me my love of classic TV and cinema. I am 22 but I love shows like Lost in Space, Gunsmoke, Chips, Andy Griffith.

would be a minefield today making a programme like the original what with the woke movement insisting on cultural diversity and other lefty garbage. Best to leave well alone and remember the originals, as for the remake, completely butchered the role of Dr. Smith.

His story is an example of how you work your up in Hollywood. In the mid-1950s, Williams got his first job as a pianist in the Columbia studio orchestra, under the baton of Morris Stoloff. He started by just playing little piano riffs for a movie like "Picnic." After a while, according to Williams, Stoloff liked his work and asked him to write a few bars of music and sent him over to Alfred Newman at 20th Century-Fox where he worked on musicals like "Carousel" and "The King and I." A decade later, he got this gig at Fox for "Lost in Space." In 1971, he won his first Oscar for the adaptation of "Fiddler on the Roof." After that, "Jaws," "Star Wars," "Indiana Jones," "E.T." and so on. Along the way, he broke Newman's record for most Oscar nominstions with an unsurpassed resume of musical styles.
