In the late 70's my best friend and I got lost in the woods outside Fairbanks, AK. No map or compass. The best thing we did was stop the INSTANT we realized neither of us was sure of where we were. We sat down, took some deep breaths and thought about and talked the situation out. We oriented ourselves to the sun, then cleared a spot on the ground and drew a map with known spots on it oriented to roughly north We were able to back track to a known point and were only lost for about an hour. The hollow pit in your stomach feeling you get when you realize your lost is a feeling I never want again.
😲 the "Pink Ninja" is basically a carbon copy of Mrs Survival Russia. Great to see the two of you having quality time. Embrace every second of it, time like that is precious.
Yep, the thought crossed my mind too .. 'her Mother's Daughter 😁. Reminds me very much of my Daughter when she was that age. A little 'rissiepit' (hot) chilli pip then .. mind of her own. Now in her late thirties, she hasn't changed much 💕 😏.
As old Daniel Boone once said while exploring Kentucky in 1767. ..I have never been lost but I was bewildered for several days. Good to see a new vid Lars!
I am a native Kentucky from the Appalachian Mountains! I love the Daniel Boone quote! “I can't say as ever I was lost, but I was bewildered once for three days.” As quoted in Daniel Boone in “The Life & Legend of an American Pioneer” (1993) by John Mack Faragher page 65.
@@ReichenbachEsq thanks for clarifying Daniel Boone's quote. I'm a Kentucky resident myself! My parents raise 6 of us and the outdoors is still a big part of our life!
@@recondrone6826 Your quote was correct as well, from my understanding. Daniel Boone made several comments about not being “lost” & all of them are worded a little differently but all are similar. This makes it impossible to get the quote wrong 😆 I suspect what Daniel meant was a “lost” person must be found & saved…& he saved himself & made it home every time so he was technically, never “lost”. Daniel clearly had a sense of humor 😏
I live in the Boreal Forest region of northeastern Ontario Canada . There are places here where you could be three meters from a trail or road and not see it . Realizing and accepting you are lost puts you in a situation where controlling your emotions and calming your mind is the first but most important and difficult thing you must do .
I always thought tagging trees with bright colored wrap every 25-50 yards was an easy way to not get lost. Retrieve the wraps on the way out. Its not professional, but so long as no one messes with it, you're guaranteed to not get lost.
The Pink Ninja has grown so much! I have been subscibed longer than I realized; I'm not sure if she was even born when I first started watching you, Lars. If so, she certainly wasn't walking or talking. Always good to see you & your family.
Pleasure to meet your Brother, thank him for having the courage to share his story! Nice to see you still enjoying quality time with the Pink Ninja, she favors her Mom so much! Cheers from Kentucky!
Your brother seems like the most down to earth guy. Glad he found his way back safely, I never wanna get lost in the wilderness, thanks for sharing these important stories.
So glad that it was a happy ending. I got lost in a forest with my family once and it took me a long time for us to find our car again. I always carry a compass and a lighter now wherever I go.
I used to use a topographical map and a compass. Then I graduated to an electronic compass. I finally got a GPS but still continued to carry the topographical map and a compass. One trip I was in some woods where years ago the farmers had removed all of the trees creating thick undergrowth. I could see no landmarks so the map and even the GPS were of no value. The only thing I could do was follow the compass because I knew in a certain direction I would eventually hit a certain road. Then I had to follow the road the long way back to my truck.
Haha, you’re all cammoed out and covered and the Pink Ninja is in sneakers, short pants and a T shirt. A real bad a**. Reminds me of my granddaughter. 😊
If I could spend some time with the brother-in-law I could help him with English and he could help me expand on the small amount of Russian I can understand .
Good to see the Pink Ninja, she is almost grown and favors her mother, you shud take her more often on outdoor adventures. Are there any snakes there? We have lots of poison snakes here in the south eastern US. My grandfather always torn out Beaver 🦫 dams to lower the water , the fish wud start biting better. Good video Hammer Down Lars 👍
i got turned around in the forest a couple of weeks ago, somewhere i have been to many times and know well, even now i'm not sure how it happened, the place was flooded and can only think i got distracted. I realised after walking half a mile but if i had been somewhere unfamiliar there is no saying how far i would have walked.
I very often carry bug repellant, but rarely use it. The pink Ninja asked me to spray her back and arms. Not the legs though lol She is quite good with the bugs actually.
Thanks, it's nice to see you again. I also got a bit lost in the forest, but I found my way, so the next time I marked my car on the Google map and I returned without a problem, I used it as a simulation, I knew I would come back because my phone would bring me back but I watched my behavior, and before I turned the navigation back on I saw what mistakes I was making, many times I went in the exact opposite direction, and thanks to this analysis in the future I knew what to look for, so in the forest I didn't know I always marked my car on the map, took care of the batteries and returned with mushrooms, Have a nice day
Years ago, I told viewers to train exactly like that. Turn your NAV app on, then try to walk only using your sense of direction and see what happens ))) All mistakes will become clear as day.
Never heard of Oukitel before but I'll get one for sure, very nice price and features plus shipping from within the EU so there'll be no added customs fees and tax, big thank you for the heads up.
Greetings Lars!! Thank You for another Great video share!! Very Informative and insightful!! You are sure looking Ships Shape!!! 👍👍 I miss getting out into the timber or near lakes and streams! Don't however miss the pesky bugs that want you for lunch lol!!! Take Care, and its Awesome you and your daughter got an opportunity to spend some meaningful and educational time outdoors together!!👏👏🎣🏞🙋♀️- Mindi
Carry orange reflective tape to tie around trees or hang off branches at impotant points. Carry a machete or big knife and hack into saplings to hinge them over as you go to mark the rest of the way in between the orange tape. Always put a shoe print anywhere it is muddy and be aware what your own shoe print looks like. Often i take sticks and make an arrow on the ground so i know direction of travel if i find my trail again after getting lost. Always look for your path thru the grass and weeds, it will leave everything bent over, you knock off the dew as you go, etc... I've been lost a few times...you either learn the smart way or the hard way... All of these tactics have saved my bacon at one time or another.
I don’t know the lost feeling but trapped. Listen to pilots when backcountry hunting or any sport. Got stuck for almost a week in Alaska. Had enough but wasn’t ideal.
As soon as I saw the title, a Cure song popped into my head. Suddenly I stop But I know it's too late I'm lost in a forest All alone The girl was never there It's always the same I'm running towards nothing Again and again and again and again...
Growing up dad never trusted us with fishing poles and lures ,he would hand us about 10 ft of fishing line and a small gold hook and we would go down to the little mountain streams and catch little brookies all day no worms needed. But it kept us occupied and out of trouble for the day😂😂😂😂 while the grown-ups went out and fished in the boat
I remember walking off the trail to water the leaves, when i was done....lost! Couldn't find the trail. Luckily, i was with others and they came and got me. They keep asking what i was yelling about.
Staying calm is one of the most important things & If you know how to hunt, fish, get clean water, navigate, build shelter etc then one is less likely to panic which is really a death sentence.
It just seems so darn flat there. There aren't any hills to get a sight line on. Where I'm at, there are very distinct hills with clear-cuts and timber covered areas. Logging roads and creeks help, too. If you head downstream, you will end up at the major river and cross some main line logging roads on the way. We are having the same weather by the way. Rain and fog 16°C.
I use a zip lock bag that i made out of bright colored orange golf ball sized pieces of paper every so many meters, it works awesome, and if you don't want to retrieve them on your way back its o.k. there environmentally safe to leave them on the earth!!!❤❤❤❤😂😂😂😂
Okay as a Firefighter , we have Left hand or Right search . Okay now imagine you have no visual reference as to where you are going . So to make it clear how hard we rely on visual reference . Easy exercise pick a place you work at , place yourself within a room close or maybe far from an exit .....now think normal entry or if not where you are closer to a closer fire exit . Sounds pretty simply but I will guarantee you will work your way to where you came in . Always look for fire exits as that is your safe and closet route out , or you go the way you came in which will meet a mass of people with the same idea . Now this is a modern fail in navigation , East or West etc no matter If you paid attention you will know your nearest exit . To me in my job in General life this is your life saver . Now in the woods , totally different how ever with google maps and compass apps you have a better understanding and chance of survival . There are no corridors etc but bearings out of where you have gone . If you went west and had to return east later .....compass bearing and maybe lights or land marks etc . Obviously night makes it worse but you can work it out . How ever I am from the UK and in my area we don't have such wide areas of wild Country side . How ever and it has been a while since I was pure map and compass , I still think with old school and modern i will make my way . How ever in mass woods like Lars and his family and friends , local knowledge goes a long way .
Let the pink ninja take over your channel, more content from her please. You are all geared up, while she is in sneakers & shorts, catches more fish & is not bothered.
