Lost in the Medina of Algiers is a video walking trough one of the most historical sites of Algeria: the Casbah. I entered trough an alley and interacted with some vendors, I bought an Algerian futbol jersey, I tried a coffee with rose water and bought a nice souvenir from this beautiful part of North Africa.

Hello, guys. I have a message that my friend Myriam sent to clarify that she is not a tour guide. She was so gentle and kind to let me film while we hang out at downtown Algiers. Here is the message: Hello brothers and sisters, i would like to kindly explain that i am not a tourist guide at all. I met Gladys by chance in a taxi and the interaction with her was so lovely. We agreed to meet and i showed her all that i know. My facts about history are not exact, i have given her information based on the general ideas that i already had. I apologize for any miscommunication! Thank you.

It was built by the Zirides on the ruins of the ancient site that dates back to the Romans and Phoenicians, long before the arrival of the Turks. For information, it continues to bear the name of the Zirides, just as we Algerians call ourselves 'D'Ziriyine', a word composed of 'D', a Berber preposition that means 'of' or 'the', and 'Ziriyines', which is the name of the dynasty and the Ziride people. This makes the name that the locals use, 'D'Ziriyine', literally translate to 'The Zirides'. This name transformed into Arabic as 'Al Jazayariyine', and then into other languages as 'Algeria', 'Algérie', etc.(That’s why there’s the famous 'DZ' that many people don’t understand how it is related to Algeria). The capital is called 'D'Zayer el Assima' Which means Algiers, the capital. Oh yes, another piece of information: the capital 'D'Zayer' still carries the heritage of its Ziride founders, particularly Bologhine ibn Ziri ibn Menad, who made it the capital of the Ziriyines. A popular neighborhood still bears his name, Bologhine.

19:45 Actually, you gave the women 500 DA, and they returned a 200 DA coin to you. On the other side of that coin, it is marked "50," which commemorates the 50th anniversary of independence. Although you mentioned 50, it's actually a 200 DA coin. Therefore, you didn't spend 450 DA ($2); instead, you paid a total of 300 DA ($1.30). ;)

@@ginniewinner2178 This style is called zirid/ moorish architecture it looks nothing like the ottoman one , not to mention that it was bulit 6 centuries before our allies with the ottoman army which wasn't even turkish they were from other european countries that were under the ottomans like Greece, not to mention the Word Casbah which is purely for Maghreb region Algeria Morocco and Tunsia

Hi Gladys and Chris, happy to see you visit our country or at least a very small part of it ;) you missed some spots in Algiers such as Bastion 23, la pêcherie, the museums at the martyr memorial, Bardo museum, Bouchaoui Forest, … and a lot of other cities such as Constantine, Bedjaia, mountains, Cherea Forest, Kabylie villages, Annaba, el Kala, Sahara which is insane. Well hope you will come again and stay longer. And please Algerian ambassy give them a long term visa ;)

I think the lady serving tea wanted to say "orange blossom flower extract" (called locally mazhar, which translate into water of the flower). To be Fair many people are confusing orange blossom flower with rose water, including me when I first was looking for it here in London. The two are totally different and worth noting that the orange blossom water adds great flavour, aroma and taste when cooking sweets and cakes. Beware though when you get it in the USA or here in the UK, from a supermarket, it’s likely the concentrated version with alcohol added and it doesn’t quite do the job. You want to go to an Algerian shop, Turkish or Middle Eastern shop and ask for Mazhar. If you buy it in a big bottle then most likely it’s already diluted so you use it as is, but if it’s a tiny bottle then it’s concentrated and you may want to dilute it by mixing it with water. Try it in your cake cooking, it really does add a lot of flavour. Enjoy your stay there. I haven’t been for 8 years and your video does make me want to visit again..

Casbah was built by local inhabitants ( Amazigh) by a person called Bologhine Ibn Ziri in 960, not by Ottomans. When Ottomans came the city was already there....please correct the information !!!

A very beautiful video, the way you deal with people, as well as your stopping in very sensitive and very historical areas in the city of the Kasbah, which is called the Big Citadel. It is interesting what you did, my beautiful lady, but let me tell you that you have not seen anything yet in the continent of Algeria, and this is what I saw in the Kasbah, drop by drop. Small from the sea, welcome to the continent of Algeria

The kasbah is not Ottoman.. but centuries before the Ottomans.. It is rather Numidian.. The Romans demolished it then rebuilt by "Belkin bin Ziri"930.A.J.C..but The alliance with the Ottomans dates back to 1518.. This architecture does not exist in Türkiye... neither in history nor today

Everyone talked about history and forgot the woman who spoke fluently with the beautiful lady in English, and this is a beautiful thing and I am proud of you because we have begun to speak English fluently after French. It is considered that the Algerian Ashab speaks 3 languages: Arabic, French and English. Welcome, beautiful lady and gentleman, to your adopted country.😘
