Imagine arriving at Norwich Station in 2022 to find that everything you look at immediately changes to 1962. That's what this video attempts to achieve.
The year I was born! Lovely to see St Augustine pool. I remember swimming lessons there in the 1970s and many Saturday mornings with my mates daring each other to jump off the high board. Great memories.
I used to go with my grandfather to buy cattle, when the livestock market was next to the castle, and whilst your videos are delightful, they do make me remember my age, as I recall what places looked like in those days.
Ronnie G. I visited the Great Eastern Hotel twice in about 1958, the public bar on the corner by the balcony and Prince of Wales road is the only drinking house I ever went in which actually had sawdust on the floor. Round the corner was a lounge which had whicker chairs, and baskets with something like bamboo growing in them, shades of Singapore perhaps. Sadly, it appeared a bit run down.
Wow, as someone that loves history I love this kind of stuff. It's always so fascinating seeing how cities were many years ago, and how they compare to now. Great video John, we're excited to see more. Keep up the great work! 😊
I think you've mentioned before about this smells that take you back. For me the most glorious smell was when walking behind Mecca with the breeze coming from the chocolate factory mixing with freshly roasted coffee. When you put up the Mecca picture I could smell it.Thank you. Then the windy bus station.Seldom had any money left to visit the station cafe for a warm up.
Love this. Only just discovered these by a friend sharing on Facebook. I’ve been here half my life this year and enjoy learning about the city I love to call home
As an art student in Norwich in the late 70s I seem to remember a place either on Brigg st or Haymarket called the Mancroft Wine vaults, but can find no evidence of it now, I'm sure I didn't imagine the place !
Great trip down memory lane - can’t believe the difference where the Grove Stores were! Remember a lot of the other locations looking like that when I was a kid, particularly Peter Robinsons, The Mecca and London Street. Funnily enough, I did my dissertation at university on the pedestrianisation of London Street as it was historically significant in town planning terms for the UK. Keep up the excellent videos.
Apparently the site of the Great Eastern hotel had a clause that it must always be a hotel that occupies it. Hence the Hotel Nelson that replaced the Great Eastern.
Thanks John, another trip down memory lane. I don't remember the prefabs in Norwich, but remember well visiting my Grandmother in Beccles, living in the same prefabs. Its obvious some thing have changed for the better, but not sure all the changes have, not many empty shops in the sixties
Great video, as always. Having moved away from Norwich many years ago now, I find it easy to get lost when I visit. These scenes really help me get some perspective. Thank you!
Thank you for taking the time and considerable effort to bring us another great upload, really brings back some great memories of how things used to be although some of these had already gone in my childhood, Brilliant, Thanks.
Great vid. Thank you. Remember a few pints being whacked down at the Rat and Parrot. Amazing how streets have adapted through time. Shame we lost St Augustines pool but there were others by then. Hi from Thailand...again.
I cannot believe how shabby Norwich looks in the video. I often visit Norwich, and it has a lot of very pretty views not seen in this video. It is worth a visit!
Definitely worth a visit! My intention was certainly not to show the less impressive side of the city, more to illustrate some of the changes over time.
I've been wondering about those carvings of Defoe and Caxton on the former Wimpy Bar, now I know! Very interesting and informative as always, John. In my home town of Ipswich there are still some prefabs in use. I've been in one and it's like going into Dr Who's Tardis.
Enjoying all of your videos John, great job! Wondering if you would be interested in doing another about harford hall and estate where the tuckswood estate is now if you have any archives? I’ve searched everywhere online and found very little info, not even one photo. Regards Matt.
