EPISODE ONE - 'LUNE VALLEY MEANDER'
This series explores the lost railways of the Lancaster & Morecambe area of Lancashire.
Episode one traces part of the old Green Ayre Line which connected Yorkshire to the city of Lancaster and the seaside town of Morecambe via Lancaster Green Ayre Station.
We begin our journey at Lancaster Green Ayre and travel east to the village of Caton, looking for traces of the lost railway along the way.
We would like to thank everyone who helped us in the making of this video, especially the friendly and helpful people we met along the way.

I really appreciate the considered and well researched nature of this video. I have been looking forward to 'Lost Railways of Lancaster & Morecambe - Episode Three' for circa eight years. I have watched other videos on Railways in the Lancaster area, nothing comparing to: 'Lost Railways of Lancaster & Morecambe - Episode One' 'Lost Railways of Lancaster & Morecambe - Episode Two'

Very interesting, I stumbled upon this looking for old trolley buses of Lancaster. But couldn’t find any footage.

Great video David, thanks for that. Cycled this route many times from Glasson Dock through Lancaster to Bull Back before we get bored and turn back. I knew it was an old steam line but wasn't aware of the history, so very informative. Cheers.

Great Video and very informative. They are indeed 'viaducts', aquaducts carry water. The Ribble Head Viaduct being a perfect example.

Fantastic video and information, it's great to hear new history of my home town and also one of my favourite parts of its history. so many times people mention the same history, I will have to show my dad this video as he is a train enthusiast and he knows a lot of history from the lancaster and morecambe railway :) again fantastic and can't wait for the next episode

Brilliant, Thank you. I never went to Caton but I did go to Morcambe Promanade from Lancaster Castle via Green Ayre on the old electrics. Has to be a bonus being old sometimes :-).

Brings back a lot of childhood memories. I know Lancaster very well from my youth. Very nostalgic and bitter sweet. Such an informative, historic and intriguing video. Caton and Denny Beck, I remember them very well. Thank you for sharing.

I recall swimming in the Lune above the weir and below Lansil Works. The froth in the water was probably toxic!

Is this available on a dvd. I was born on Vicarage Lane in 1943, next to the line from Green Ayre to Castle Station. I remember the drivers throwing coal into my grandmas garden as they passed. If on we have video in those days. I still have quite a few photos taken on my Brownie Camera os Scots,Black 5s etc at Castle Station.....Mike, retired and now in S/Wales

Very interesting; I was wondering why the sidings are called 'New Zealand Sidings"?
@DavidChandler1
@DavidChandler1 8 лет назад
Hi Andrew and thanks for the kind comments. I have wondered myself about the New Zealand sidings name. One theory I've heard links to the furniture makers Waring & Gillow and the import of timber. I don't know if that's the real origin, maybe someone will come forward with another theory?

On the canal aqueduct I'm confused that you interpreted the letters LNWR as little North Western Railway. The company was never known officially by that name, only as the North Western Railway. Has Mr Abbott been identified? Of course the London &North Western Railway didn't take over the Lancaster Canal until much later.
@DavidChandler1
@DavidChandler1 6 лет назад
Leslie Gilpin although the company used NWR on its maps/timetables etc, the prefix of ‘Little’ was in common use at that time, as a search of contemporary newspapers will show. No luck tracing Mr Abbott as yet!

What is the differance between a Bridge and a Viaduct?

When I was a boy in the early 1980s I remember visiting my Grandparents who lived on Railway Street in Lancaster. Looking on a map today, it's nowhere near the main line. Does anybody know why it was so named?
@DavidChandler1
@DavidChandler1 6 лет назад
Lancaster's original station (see episode 2) was near there. The line ran near to Railway Street, through what is now the hospital car park. Watch: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-E1OlqYm7ewY.html
