Made many a trip on the old Glasgow Buchanan Street to Oban line on our way to catch a steamer out to the Western Isles for a summer holiday. I can well remember the additional locomotive which had to be coupled onto the front of the train at Callander to help haul it up the steep incline at Glen Ogle; it would be uncoupled at Crianlarich and then run back down to Callander to wait for the next northbound needing assistance with the gradient. Happy days !

i loved the story of queen victoria, having personal family connections to scotland and england, few people realize that at one point in time the royals werent that stuck up like some people believe they are. Queen lizzy is actually a badass woman if you arent english and dont know her life story( as american i loved learning about her time in ww2 and afterwards)

David, you have the same problem we have in the US....five minutes of television broken up by ten minutes of commercials, especially during the time national networks are trying to bury us in total sewage they attempt to call news. I have all but given up watching television, preferring instead to watch streaming videos, rented DVD's and RU-vid stories. MUCH more entertaining and NO political BS!

Electric token system , I have used to work a box that had a branch line that used it. It had it's drawbacks, though . It was possible to get on the branch line from another direction, so we found that all the tokens would ,in time end up the wrong end . The S&T had to come down with a old cardboard box and take them to the other end in a van !

Terry Thomas Wonder if you have made it here. Many years ago I travelled the Scottish Highlands route from Perth to Inverness. When trains had carriages holding 6 people and a corridor. At one point the train would ascend at a snail's pace and we'd look down onto the tops of Scots pine trees. Once, during a wintery dawn, everyone went to the corridor and opened the windows for a clear vision of tall, snow covered pines, and long icicles hanging on the trees. They shone purest gold glowing in the sun. There were many tourists. I looked at those near me, clearly overwhelmed, silent, awestruck, with tears flowing from their eyes. Most memorable. If you do come, Terry...enjoy. Oh, do plenty research prior to any destination decisions.

That is an unfair assessment of the man. These are at heart economic activities. I love the nostalgia but they have to make a profit.

I wouldn't say he was an ogre. He was, to me, a short-sighted, non forward thinking man, who had no thoughts of the future. He was backed up by a Tory Government, a bit like today, when they want to build the HS2 - a monstrosity that will run for the benefit of London & Birmingham, but at the cost of everyone, including those living in Wales & Scotland! Far better to spend the money on reinstating some of the lost lines, and reduce congestion nationwide!

Wyn Parkin I would have to do more research on the HS2. I am rather wary of anti-tory rhetoric. The other day I heard someone blame Thatcher for the destruction of the local auto industry. I have intimate knowledge of that so I keeled over with laughter. Research in econ and finance is pretty boring but it will prove what lengths people will go to advance a political cause by telling blatant lies.

I don't agree. Beeching was a great visionary who saved a lot of money and brought the railways into the modern age. We have far too many preserved steam and diesel locomotives clogging up the sidings of heritage railways. These are rusting away, creating health and saftey issues, problems of parts being sold on the black market, and pollution etc. This mess needs to be cleared up now. These rusting hulks need to be cut apart, broken up and the various metals melted down to make new and useful items. It's only a matter of time before a lot of these "preserved" locos will face the shears and the torch.

At the time when he destroyed Britains' Railways, the coalfields were in charge and like in the welsh valleys, most miners walked to work and the rest used a workers train. But, when the Tories decided to destroy the coalfields too, people then had to travel to find work, and not many miners had cars. If the railways had still been available then we wouldn't have the acres of tarmac, and the gridlocks, that we have now. As for preserved railways being health and safety problems, which should be scrapped, I am left wondering why you have been looking at these videos! They are our history and everyone loves these railways, Why else would they be able to survive even though Beeching did his worst by been an idiot!

Quite correct even. May not have been official but was first 100 mph. Never seen it running only at York and some years ago was on Lemon Quay, Truro where I had a business.
