Despite all odds the E-100 was a Superheavy tank nearly completed by the German's during the second world war. However, the tank has since been lost to time...but could it still exist?

To add a little more to the mystery about the hull's fate, around 7 years ago a survey done of the area found a lot of stuff buried under the ground which was thought to probably be military vehicles. As far as I know the area the tanks were once placed is now part of a parking lot so its unlikely to be dug up anytime soon. If you still can't get enough E-100 in your life head on over to my second channel and catch the video uploaded just after this one showing some gameplay of this beast: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5oyVzwpD3Qo.html

I can say as someone who loves Narrow Gauge railway stuff The E-100 sounds a LOT like the L&B's locomotive "Lew" Supposedly lost to time, just like the E-100 Lew's exact fate is unknown, she was sold off after the L&B closed, to South America, that is all we know.

With regard to the StuG E-100, a centrally mounted casemate as on the Jagdtiger would certainly be preferable since it wouldn't require moving the engine and redesigning the drive train. But the weight and length of the 17cm gun might've made that too front-heavy. So a rear-mounted casemate like World of Tanks depicts it might have been necessary.

Amazing story! I just finished building and painting up a model I bought of an E100 nearly 30 years ago. I found it and built it before seeing this video. I might have approached it a little differently, but I too note that the Maus turret, which this kit uses with the hull, is way too big. It would just bog down and slow down anywhere. I figured that out before I saw this video. Still, some really cool ideas presented here, and the mind boggles that, if the war had gone on a year or more, we would have had big troubles no matter what form of tanks Germany used!

The reason for the Porsche Maus being chosen over the Tiger Maus was most likely due to two factors: 1) The Porsche Maus was further along in design and the Germans were becoming increasingly desperate and short-sighted at this point in the war 2) Ferdinand Porsche was heavily favored by Hitler as a person. I can't say for certain off the top of my head whether or not they were _friends_ per se, (and Mr. Porsche would have undoubtedly denied it were anyone to have ever asked him after the war) but Porsche did enjoy a great deal of favoritism and special treatment from Hitler due to the professional respect Hitler had for Porsche's engineering skills.

Hull wise e100 was better protected than the Maus frontally due to the armor being much more angled Also the sides if equipped with the 70 mm (and 120 mm hull + tracks behind them) side panels offered protection against HE and Heat

Thanks. I really like hearing about these kinds of tanks. I know they are often ridiculous but I find them interesting ( I suspect the 20s and 30s had a lot of speculation of Giant Battleship Tanks). and one can't easily find information on them. I'd like to see you do the T-34M and the DB Panther. Both of these tanks offered the promise of outstanding tanks that could have had an interesting impact on the war IF history had been different. As a point of interest... you mention parts being sent to the wrong place. I get it was difficult for Germany at the end of the war... but I can't help wondering if all the Slave and almost Slave (forced "volunteer " labor) didn't muck things on purpose..

On the decision towards the Porsche-Maus, it might actually be a problem of personal affection, as Hitler liked Ferdinand Porsche quite much, while Krupp was far less in his favor.

About choosing Maus over Tiger-Maus: It is no secret that Ferdinand Porsche was in favor of moustache man, and Porshe himself was so confident in the power of said favor, that he built 90 hulls for his Tiger prototype, believing that his design will surely win. And it seems that, if not for the engine fire on a demonstration of both protorypes, Porsche might have won that contest. Here tho, not only there was no problems with engine catching fire, but also having most of the tank design already more or less done - moustache man might just not even considering to look at competition.

A big reason i can think of for Maus to be chosen over Tiger-Maus is how close Ferdinand Porsche and Hitler were. As far as I know Porsche didn't even call him Führer but Adolf, which made him the only one to do that around.
@joaoie
@joaoie 2 года назад
I wonder, perhaps the logic of accepting the design not yet ready for production was that the situation at the time was such that any additional strain on production capacity would not be good, and as the super heavy tanks were intended as "forward thinking" designs, it was decided with the logic that the Maus would be better, more developed, with better timing on a larger scale

The problem with the E-100 is that the Russians use 15.2 CM tank destroyers derived from IS-2 Heavy tank(12.2cm) the ISU-152 therefore it would have been an easy target for those followed by Su-100 10cm tank cannon T-34-85 Chasis. Not sure if there was actually a plan to make it like a Jagdpanther?

Just because the British and USA had limitations in moving super heavy tanks due to rail and crane limitations doesn't mean the Germans had the same issues. These tanks would have been effective. The 200 ton maus could be moved and could cross any river on any railway bridge with a special 14 axle carriage. It could cross a river on a Pontoon Bridge and it could cross a river by fording by a second maus provided electrical power. It required some work by the engineers but it could be done. The E series (E-10, E-25, E-50, E-75 and E-100, actual weights in tons a little higher) was of balanced design with the E-75 and E-100 being breakthrough tanks. In July 1944 Hitler ordered the suspension of work on the super heavy tanks. Six E-100 escorted by a pack of smaller tanks to protect the flanks would have been deadly and effective.

Porsche should have stuck to cars designing were he and is family had far more success , but it is interesting his fascination with Hybrid power . right from his first car designs he would revisit such idea's several times mainly with these crazy Tank designs , I can see his thinking due to the Dire shortage of a strong enough power unit instead of the already overstressed Maybach engine . with all other power units been needed for other defence projects and lack of materials to boot. copper been one of them , why the German military went down this dead end path for super heavy tanks one it goes in the opposite direction of fast and mobil war , the very thing they proved worked at the beginning of WW2 . how this was ever going to work against the Soviet and their lighter and faster tanks on a battle feild or against the new generations of British and American mediums and heavy tanks just entering production at the end of WW2 . This is almost retreating into a more WW1 mind set of slowing movement down with mobil bunkers . one can only think how many simpler Medium tanks they could have made while wasting much less effort and resources in the process. It would have been essayer just to have copied the T34's approach without over thinking the whole idea and trying to build a bigger and stronger tank. A very German thing is overtalking an idea something many of my German friends have told me.
