I continue with the beginning of The Fellowship of the Ring from LotR and focus a lot on the film and book differences, but I also explain the Lore behind pipe-weed and some of the hobbit characters we see in the background and here and there (all around Hobbiton and Bilbo's birthday party). Also who is Old Toby?

Is the relationship in the Lord of the rings between Legolas and Gimli the same in the books as it is in the films? Is the line "I never thought I'd die side by side with an elf" taken from the books?

I would say the core is in some areas similar. In the books they get along well much faster (at the end of Fellowship of the Ring or after leaving Lothlórien they are friends), while the films make it more into a development over all the films with a bit of competition and comedy in it. The books don't put Gimli that much into the role of comic relief, though the competition of slaying enemies at Hornburg is in the book too, though at the end Legolas says: "You have passed my score by one,’ answered Legolas. ‘But I do not grudge you the game, so glad am I to see you on your legs!". So more wholesome and as said they were friends already, while the films spice it up a bit more if that makes sense. I think the quote is not from the books, but I could be wrong (would have to re-read the chapters 😅).

Film fact: Pippin's girlish scream as the dragon firework blast off was Billy Boyd's genuine reaction to how the firework got fired. He didn't knew that the prop firework would actually blast off, assuming the blast was going to be done in post production, and got so scared that he screamed like a girl. Peter Jackson thought it was funny and kept it in the film (although the scream was done in ADR, as you can tell from the documentary and the film isn't exactly the same). Also, Dominic Monaghan (Merry) teased Boyd for this afterwards.

@@JJJJJVVVVVLLLLL But Boyd got back at Monaghan after he got a spinter into his foot while filming the run to the Bucklebury Ferry. Dom felt a great pain in his foot but it turned out to be a splinter "half the size of a match stick" according to Boyd. Afterwards whenever Monaghan sweated Boyd would ask if he was alright (refering to the incident with the splinter) to tease him, to which Monaghan would frustratingly growl as answer.

After a long time a new episode of this format ^^ I hope you like it. It also got quite long and a bit messy. Also I assume there are some mistakes in the video. It as late at times :D This time I focused a lot on book/film differences, but we also got some halflings' leaf lore (please do not start smoking).

Billy and Katie Jackson, the children of Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, make cameoes as two of the children that listen to Bilbo telling the story of how he and the dwarves got captured by the trolls (from the Hobbit chapter Roast Mutton, though in the Hobbit trilogy it was changed a bit so the trolls weren't arguing over how to cook the dwarves, which caused them to be turned to stone because the sun was rising). They were four and three years old at the time and during the filming, to keep all the children entertained take after take, Ian Holm would tell other stories whenever the camera was on them. Billy Jackson was the only hobbit actor on The Lord of the Rings that wasn't wearing a wig as he had perfect hobbit hair.

Shirefolks suspicion of both Bilbo and Frodo also comes from their meetings with Elves from time to time in forests of the Shire's borders.

Yes a good point! in the Extended Edition there is the scene with Frodo and Sam seeing the elves (we are not there yet), so I probably talk a bit about it next video I guess. I hope i don't forget ^^ Thank you for commenting :)

I wouldn't mind watching 30 LotR movies, if only they had the backbone to build it. Every director is looking for a 1-hit major sucess... I guess it's the days we live in. Good work once more, hope you're doing well.

Cinema these days is often a sad and complicated matter =/ (esp. in certain genres) At the same time nobody wants to watch some of the good stuff, e.g. like Blade Runner 2049 ;( I would not be surprised, if we see a new LotR adaption at some point in the future (maybe in 10-15 years). LotR books will become public domain around 2044 (if they don't change the law again). But ofc with the trends we see in Hollywood (and their formula) and the development over the last 3 decades, I'm a bit worried. What Peter Jackson did, was impressive, but I don't see too much of the needed "spirit", vision and attitude in younger film makers these days to hit that sweet spot in "tone", that is necessary to depict Tolkien's vision (with some exceptions, but they won't make Lord of the Rings I guess). Peter Jackson has found it and managed to fulfill some of Hollywood's conventions at the same time. An impressive balance act. I do. I hope you are doing well too :) Thank you ^^

@@ThePhilosophersGames Perhaps it's better to keep Lord of the Rings movies as they are now. Made with tons of work, not in green rooms. Also I cannot really imagine watching Lord of the Rings movie with other actors. Moreover creating super long series isn't for everyone, for instance: right now I'm watching it with my girlfriend, and we have to take a week time between movies, because (as she is watching it for the first time) she cannot focus on long movies, or even TV series. Would be nice to have everything explained in movie itself, but you got to keep momentum going. In my opinion Lord of the Rings is where it should be: handcrafted masterpiece, with high level of details, great actors doing great job, with it's own interpretation of original book, as well as tons of memes that'll keep it forever young on the internet. With each passing year we get better and better special effects made by computers and that makes some movies look old. Time goes by, and I still have chills during Moria fight with Balrog, looks perfect to me as much as it did when I first saw movie. And although I watched whole movie over 150 times (I guess I have too much spare time), every single time I watch ending with Frodo and Gandalf saying goodbyes to Hobbits I just cry, even though I don't cry while watching movies at all. I don't want remastered LotR, I want to keep it in my memories as it is, nothing more is needed for me

Yes agreed, esp. with the actors part. It's hard to imagine a new trilogy for me too. For this video I watched a bit of "making of" material and seeing how much stuff they actually physically built is extremely impressive and it shows. LotR definitely aged well, but ofc in some areas you see its age, but it's forgivable and I tend to like watching old movies anyways (e.g. from the late 1920s). We will see what they will do. Time will tell ^^

About Sauron's eye, Peter Jackson misinterpted that the Eye of Sauron is his elemental form as he lost his body when he lost the One Ring. John Howe also have misinterepted this as he says in the commentary for the Return of the King that Sauron has no physical form in the books, hence why it was a bad idea for an earlier version of The Battle of the Black Gate had Aragorn fighting against Sauron. Though he did have a one and that was like a burned man (mentioned in Tolkien's letters), completely black. Gollum later tells in The Two Towers book that he describes Sauron's hand to be black and only has four fingers, due to Isildur cut off his finger at The Battle of Last Alliance, as he saw The Dark Lord when being captured and tortured in Mordor. The Hobbit movie redeems this mistake somewhat by having a spiritual version of Sauron's armored body from the LOTR prolouge, in a black shape and it is the pupil of the flaming eye, when The Necromancer turns out to be Sauron in disguise. It can be assumed that if Sauron got the Ring back, he would get his body back as Saruman says in the Orthanc later "He cannot YET take physical form.".

Fun fact: You can see in the behind the scene documentaries and the concept art for Sauron, his physical form underneath the helmet which also follows Tolkien's concept of Sauron looking like a burnt man with black skin, no ears, just slits for nose holes, a horrifying mouth and his eyes possible resemble his spiritual Eye form. It's unknown werever this was intended to be shown in the movie but not filmed or effects not completed, or if this was just a basis for conceptualizing Sauron's armor.

When you see Frodo riding in Gandalf's cart and talks with the wizard, the cart is split in half so that Elijah Wood sits three feet further away from Ian McKellen, making him smaller than the latter (Frodo's half is a third bigger than on Ian's side including the pole that he grabs hold on). This trick is called Forced Perspective, which have been used since the early film history to make certain persons look bigger or smaller in the same shot before bluescreen was invented (which was also used in some scenes such as Frodo taking the Ring in Bag End saying "All right! We keep it secret. We keep it hidden. We'll never speak of it again. No one knows it's here, do they?" and walking away from the kitchen while Gandalf follows him a bit behind, Elijah's part was done in blue screen while Ian McKellen's was filmed on small Bag End set).

The scene where Bilbo takes Gandalf's staff and hat was a complex shot that were done with two different sets, one in a blue screen set with Ian McKellen handing over his staff and hat to a guy standing by to get them, and the other at big Bag End set where Ian Holm gets a set of hat and staff. Both shots where composited in carefully earsing the guys out of the shot and matching the shots where the staves and hats where handed over. The items that were handed to Holm were 30 % larger than McKellen's normal sized ones to make Holm look smaller. Gandalf hitting his head on the beam wasn't scripted, it was a mistake done by Ian McKellen, which normally would be consindered a blooper, but since McKellen stayed in character and Peter Jackson liked this (unintentional) comedic bit that it stayed in the film.

Film facts: Merry carries the cake at the start of the party scene. Pippin can also be seen playing in the band on a lute or some kind of guitar-like instrument. The party scene where shot in the studio except for the start of the scene where the firework glitter rains down, above the banner saying "Happy Birthday Bilbo Baggins.". Peter Jackson has comfirmed that his cousin Jill is among the extras but forgot to point out where so she could be anyone. At Bilbo's speech, when they shot the party guests, Ian Holm wasn't there so Dominic Monaghan read the speech for the extras to react. The candles of the birthday cake (which was made of polystyrene) kept burning throughout the shooting of the scene that it burned down as the polystyrene caught on fire. Ian Holm kept on acting as nothing had happened.

Film fact: At the party there is suppoused to be 144 hobbits (to fit with the gross of which were refered in the book) but due to budget constraints, there were only a hundred on the set.

Some facts from the books that was added in the scene when Bilbo and Gandalf are in Bag End the first time. First of all, Bilbo asks Gandalf if he would like tea or wine, which is from The Hobbit when Gandalf is offered tea but ask for some red wine (which also is referenced in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey). Bilbo mentions that his wine were laid on layer by his father (Bungo Baggins) which is told in fourth chapter, the night before Frodo moves from Hobbiton to start his journey he drinks the last of Bungo's wine. In addition to tea, Bilbo offers Gandalf things to eat, among of them are raspberry jam and apple tart, which in The Hobbit book Bifur asks Bilbo to serve him at the party in the very first chapter, cheese which Bofur asks for and cold chicken which Gandalf asks him to bring in The Unexpected Party. Later Lobelia Sackville-Baggins knocks on the door, Bilbo whispers to Gandalf "I'm not at home" which refers to the chapter "Not at home", the chapter late in the Hobbit after Smaug flies out of Erebor in pursue of Bilbo and the Dwarves. Later when Bilbo and Gandalf discusses the hobbit's plan to leave the Shire, he tells Gandalf that he "feels thin sort of streched, like butter scraped on too much bread" which in the book he says to the wizard later after his disappearing trick and starts to leave Bag End.

Film fact: Because of concern regarding polictical correctness in Hollywood films regarding characters smoking in films, director Peter Jackson along with screenwriters Fran Walsh and Philipa Boyens wrote a running gag of Gandalf has giving up smoking and was only going to smoke once in the film, along with Bilbo Baggins before the birthday party. Those scenes actually made it to the filming were Ian McKellen sucked on toffees rather than smoke (as a way to keep the addiction of the nicotine in check) but also did at least one take of Gandalf smoking the pipe in those scenes. Peter Jackson who wanted to stay true to Tolkien by having the characters smoke (which came from Professor Tolkien's culture, he was in fact a pipe smoker himself), thought that he had to fight with the executives of New Line in order to keep this but there was never any objection from them. This has been comfirmed by the director, Philipa Boyens and Ian McKellen on the audio commentaries for the film.

Also in the Extended Edition of The Return of the King in the scene of Gandalf explains the forces of evil that are going to be in The Siege of Minas Tirith (the Haradrim, the Corsair of Umbar and The Witchking of Angmar), at the start of the scene he coughs from smoking too much and Pippin brings him a chalice of water for his throat. According to Ian McKellen, this was meant as a anti-smoking propaganda in the way of the mentioned scenes of Gandalf giving up smoking.

I find the differences between the book and the films to be pretty facanating, but I do think that TLOTRs films were a pretty good adaptation overall of Tolkien's story. But with just how enormous TLOTRs is (in an amazing way that I absolutely love with a passion of course), I am not surprised that there are a strong number of differences between them still! :)

I agree (also the extended edition adds so much). I think they are great adaptions and I understand most of the changes they made (at least in LotR). The LotR movies capture some of the scenes and also often the tone of the books so well. Looking at it closely, I'm surprised how many little details were built into the films and some of them only few people will notice (and probably understand).

I really think that one of the things that make TLOTRs films so great is just how every time you pop it in for another watch, you notice little things that you didn't notice on your first viewing. And I absolutely adore (and I am a bit surprised myself) the little nods and attention to detail the films give to deeper parts of the lore for us hardcore Tolkien fans! :)

Thank you, much appreciated! Watching ads (that are 30 seconds or longer) for 30 seconds is enough on YT to generate revenue. If they are shorter than 30 seconds, just watch them to the end, the white screen that some ads may have does not count. That are the basic "ad rules" if you want to financially support content creators (who monetize their videos) and the platform. Also feel free to skip annoying ads and only see what might be actually interesting for you. I think beyond that there's also RU-vid Premium (formerly called RU-vid Red), which makes YT ad free and I get a share from the monthly fee, it costs, if Premium users watch my videos. (Premium's revenue is actually really good per 1000 views compared to normal ads revenue/1000 views, but it's ofc quite expansive with like ~12€/month).

Old Took is played by Dan Hennah, the production designer of both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films. Hennah also cameos as one of the Rohan reguees in the armory scene at Helm's Deep during the argument between Aragorn and Legolas, in The Two Towers, and one of the citizens of Minas Tirith during Aragorn's coronation (wearing a turban-like head gear) in The Return of the King.

How did Gandalf make money or how did he pay for his pipeweed and food. Any indication in the books? Just curious.

That's a really good question. I think in general economy is not really that often mentioned or well explored in Tolkien's works. We know of some trading routes and where some wares were produced (the wine of the Elvenking/Thranduil, some toys that Bilbo bought as a gift for his younger guests, pipe-weed, etc). Also we know some currencies (and some examples of values, like 12 silver pennies is a lot for an old pony), but that's it. I think there is no mention of Gandalf receiving money. But considering he helped the dwarves on their quest for Erebor and was well known among the mighty, he probably was receiving some supplies and maybe even some money for his services and journeys. The first person who he met after arriving in middle-earth was Círdan and he recognized him as a Maia (as one of the few) and gave him his Ring of Power to help him out (which eh did not sell, but was ofc of immense value not to say invaluable). I guess he offered his services for free, but ofc this gave him a good standing and allowed him to receive help, supplies, maybe pocket money for travels, etc.

@@ThePhilosophersGames One known instance of Gandalf reciving money was from the last chapter of the Hobbit, when they gathered the treasure from The Stone Trolls' cave and Bilbo thought that all the gold from it were a lot (consindering he was given two small chests of silver and gold by Daín II Ironfoot and he was already a wealthy hobbit), he offered Gandalf the treasure. Instead, the wizard suggested that they would share the treasure instead of taking the whole thing, as he saidit would come in handy for Bilbo (which in turn it did consindering he had to buy a lot of his furniture back from the auction when he returned home), splitting it 50/50.

One thing I have been racking my brain on and asking dozens of places online is: if the forces of Sauron and all the other fal things are so powerful and scary why do they lose almost always?

I guess because the good powers are not weak too and they also have god on their side. Morgoth and his servants are very powerful, but all the Valar and their servants combined are as or even more powerful. The idea of Sauron was to prevent those powers from uniting. Or take them out one by one. Sauron basically won in the 2nd Age, but when Númenor came to help the Elves, he was driven back. It's always about balance of power I guess. Sauron might have conquered Gondor, if Rohan would not have come to their aid. WiIth Gondor's fall Frodo and Sam would have it harder to reach Mount Doom, etc. Both sides have the potential to win.

I guess it also depends on your selection of fights and you potentially ignore some details. In the case of Gandalf and the Balrog both died, but Gandalf got send back/was "revived" by God (because of his acrifice and him being the last Istar/Wizard following his mission). Aragorn just drove the Nazgûl away, but they still managed to stab Frodo. technically they won there (see my video on the Weathertop scenes for further information. You could also say Nazgûl vs Théoden -> the Nazgûl win Sauron vs Gil-galad -> Sauron wins Sauron vs Elendil -> Sauron wins One Ring vs Elendil -> One Ring wins Isildur vs Orcs -> Orcs win Orcs vs Boromir -> Orcs win Faramir vs Nazgûl and Orcs -> Nazgûl and Orcs win (Faramir survives though) Háma vs Orcs -> Orcs win One Ring vs Frodo -> One Ring wins (the Ring is not destroyed by Frodo, who want to keep it and God basically makes Gollum tremble and fall into the fiery pit while dancing in the book) King Dáin II (ironfoot) vs Orcs -> Orcs win Brand (Bard's grandson) vs Orcs -> Orcs win etc. So a lot of "good" characters were slain too and evil won. Ofc this goes both ways, but in LotR a ton of characters die too. Some of this is not in the films though. PS: God gave free will and people have to deal with it. Evil is part of the world and God tolerates this as long as he removed Arda and makes the world again - this time perfect.

no problem. I get this comment a lot over the years. I don't fully understand why people hate the trilled R sound so much, because it's relatively common in many languages, but it seems to be a problem for some people. However I also get a lot of positive feedback on it and it's kind of a weird "trademark" for my channel to at least try and go for the correct pronunciation.

Love your content. I wish people like you could devote more time to make quality videos like this. You said you thought Peter Jackson's interruption of the "eye" could have been from Bilbo talking to Gandalf. It could have also been from the end of The Silmarillion where after Numenor sunk it says, "He took up again the great ring and clothed himself in power; and the malice of the Eye of Sauron few even of the great among Elves and Men could endure."

Thank you :) Yes, good call. This quote has also some interesting information ("few even of the great among Elves and Men could endure") and shows how terrible Sauron is. There are definitely many hints towards the eye. There are also several more in Lord of the Rings. I made the connection in the video, because it's mentioned in the book's dialogue and the scenes in the films are often very similar and cover the same scenes.

Thank you :) Oh yes, this video was quite difficult to make. But I have the same problem. If the last time I red a chapter lays far in the past, things from the films and books start to mix up in my mind. I also watch the films a lot and read more often the Silmarillion (also Unfinished Tales and the LotR Appendices) than Lord of the Rings' main story. So some details get lost in my head. But it's a nice experience to compare both works so closely ^^

I read in a fan's blog (Michael Martínez) an interesting theory that explained that, in THE BOOKS, in fact the eye existed and it seems that Sauron (in physical form), the Eye (in physical form and as a metaphor or will), the Ring, Barad-dûr and even a geographical part of Mordor were One.

Michael Martinez is definitely an instance ^^ I know the article, but it also comes to the conclusion, that if you consider Letter 245 Tolkien seems to envisioned Sauron in man-shape: "Sauron should be thought of as very terrible. The form that he took was that of a man of more than human stature, but not gigantic." Ofc the Eye is often mentioned in the books and Barad-dûr trembles, when Sauron notices Frodo, but I think most of that can be explained without teh presence of a physical eye of fire floating above it. Still there seems to be more to it when it comes to Sauron and his connection to Mordor. I can also see, that you would come up with this eye idea after reading LotR.

As I understand it, the Eye is one of Sauron's creatures that he uses for surveillance and intimidation, like the Mouth of Sauron or the vulture headed sentries in Mordor that didn't make it into the movies. Granted, the way the movies show it, it's implied that that is Sauron's own form in that continuity.

For me it's a powerful symbol in the books (symbol is probably a better term than metaphor) and I see how through Sauron's evil nature and power it almost becomes like a living entity. Yes the films are a bit inconsistent in this matter. Also thank you for commenting :)

It's never said- in the books when Merry and Pippin are with Treebeard they tell him about Old Man Willow and the Old Forest, and if I recall correctly Treebeard himself is the one who wonders if the Entwives somehow ended up there.

Thank you :) Always nice to see new people find my little channel. Yes i was surprised too, when I first found out. Some of this si mentioned in the later books (History of Middle-earth), but even in the LotR appendices (Appendix F) we find examples, like Sam's real name: Banazîr Galbasi. Tolkien really put in some detail, but ofc it has no "real" relevance, it's just a philologic detail.

Brian, the movies doesn't compair the pipe weed as cannabis but as tobaccoo as they do in books, including that Pippin tells Merry in Fangorn about the dream they smoked a whole barrel of pipe weed each and then Merry got sick from it. Another example in the Extended version in the scene were Gandalf explains to Pippin about the upcoming forces in The Siege of Minas Tirith/Battle of Pelenor Fields, he coughs from smoking too much and Pipin brings water for his throat.

I very much disagree... Merry and Pippin obviously look stoned, and talk about the "munchies", when Gandalf, Aragorn, Thorn, ect., pull up to Isenguard after the battle with the Ents. The other time, and the more direct reference in my opinion, is when Gandalf goes to see Saruman, and Saruman says, "clearly your mind is clouded from too much of the halflings pipe weed...". When I first saw the movie I wondered why what pipe weed was had changed from movie to book...right after Gandalf and saruman's conversation. And confirmed in the Two Towers with the Merry and Pippin scene.
