A man, a dwarf and an elf jump off a ship, they’re immediately trapped by a large orc army, the orcs decide to subject them to a cruel punishment, they will take the belongings away from the trio but the trio may choose any number of items to keep, but for every item they receive a lashing, they may also ask for an item from the shop to be strapped to their back. The man chooses 10 items and, wanting something soft, asks for the sail to be strapped to his back. the orc whip splits apart the sail in two strokes and the man is hit by the remaining 8. Next is the elf’s turn, he takes 20 items but asks for a plank of wood from the boat. It takes 10 strokes from the whip to split the wood and the elf is hit 10 tines. Finally comes the dwarf. He looks through his possessions, gold, silver, coins and crowns, and finds that there isn’t a single item he is willing to part with. After counting he finds that he will receive 200 lashes. The orc horde howls with laughter at the thought of this tiny dwarf taking 200 lashes and the chieftain says to him “what will you use for your armor” yo which the dwarf simply responds “for 200 lashes? Strap the elf to my back”

Brandon Hanson Greatest part about was that Gimli actually did win, numbers wise, although Legolas definatly overshadowed it with killing the Oliphant thing.

based on their performance in the entire battle, they weren't trained for anything.... or equipped for that matter (their armour is useless, their pikes are useless, and their archers are mostly useless); then they are faced by the unstoppable army of the dead; and one wonders, with aragorn having these ghosts, why did any man have to die in this battle? All the dead are on Aragorn here, and his inability to send a messenger or a signal, or something magical maybe? (im talking just about the film, cause i dont recall how was it that the battle is won in the book)

until a powerful necromancer named sauron or even the witch king takes control of them...there's a reason why in the books they and the witch king never got anywhere near eachother.

***** Lol, in the books Tolkien refers to an army of orcs, trolls and uruks as simply 'orcs'. It's also done many times in the films, as in Celeborn telling Aragorn that he is being tracked. Uruks are a breed of Orcs, albeit stronger and more resistant to the sun.

When the trio jumped off the ship the entire theater I was in burst out laughing. Everyone knew the orcs were hosed. Low level adversaries against high-level player characters AND their undead allies..they never stood a chance.

They needed a way to end the battle, but with all the cool shit that already happened they couldn't spend any more budget points on the Gondor Reinforcing armies.

even if they had budget for reinforcing army, what army exactly would they use? Rohan and Gondor were pretty much only Human army and they both fouth, Elves were far far away and most of them already dead in that other world, dwarves were also far far away and theres was no point to put in dwarfs. im not nerding out here or anything but im saying facts: what else forces could they use thats not ghost to help Gondor? basically good vs evil matched their forces and evil won until aragorn finally didn't came with ghosts.

To try and reach a middle ground between the original book's storyline and the idea of using the undead army to directly fight Sauron's forces (rather than just using the ghosts to scare away the pirates), I wonder if would probably have been better if Aragorn did arrive at Minas Tirith with the undead army, but they were not invincible. One of my few nitpicks with Peter Jackson's adaptation is that by making the ghosts unable to be killed or even hindered by enemy soldiers, and capable of instantly ending the battle themselves, I feel it cheapens the Rohirrim army a bit. I know that King Theoden's cavalry still helped by buying a little more time for the trapped Gondorians and allowing Eowyn to kill the Witch King, but it makes a lot of the horsemen, who gave their lives fighting the Mumakil, feel less important. As a lot of nitpickers pointed out, it also begs the question of whether or not Isildur is even more powerful than Sauron, with his undead minions being more dangerous than Nazgul, or why Isildur did not consider splitting those cursed men up into a group of smaller armies, which could each automatically win any battle no matter what. Maybe the undead soldiers/horsemen could have been like the wights/white walkers from "Game of Thrones" or draugr in "The Elder Scrolls", only also giving off a faint greenish glow. The curse would work by making their bodies unable to die from age/disease/starvation, but force them to live forever, always feeling the pain of their bodies being rotted away as a punishment. When they fight the orcs, their bodies could still be dismembered/crushed/burned, making the undead soldiers not too much deadlier than regular Gondorian soldiers. During the battle, the undead army kills off the orcs and Easterlings around the port, appears on the field to demoralize the Haradrim and scare away the remaining Mumakil, and then marches into Minas Tirith to kill the orcs and Trolls in the citadel, while the horsemen of Rohan hunt down the routed orcs left in the fields. This would make it slightly more like the book, where Aragorn arrives on the ships with Gondorian reinforcements, which tip the scale back in the heroes' favor, rather than a cheat-code deus ex machina. After the battle is over, only the King of the Death and a small fraction of his soldiers remain, so people can see that even if Aragorn broke his promise and forced them to fight at the Black Gate, it would not make a huge difference. When Aragorn holds their oaths fulfill, their bodies start turning into dust, which blows away with the wind, as we see their ghosts moving on to the next life, like souls released from Purgatory going to Heaven.

Because everyone wants to hear that the immortal army of ghosts bound to save Gondor took some ships and then left. That always bothered me in the books. They have been bound to repay their debt to the line of kings, but all they door is kill the Corsairs? Sure, it may have been important, but they would have been much more useful at Pellenor. I do agree though that the men of Lebennin and Lamedon should have been on the ships, but I think it was a good decision on PJ's part to not have the immortal ghost army repay their debt off screen.

Fidget The_Scout Well for one, they didn't just take some ships, they wiped out a large force that could have tipped the scales of the siege in Sauron's favor and secured a massive fleet that probably doubled Gondor's naval strength and provided swift transport. Second, there's a LOT of ambiguity as to whether or not the ghosts actually posed any physical threat. It is stated that Aragorn and co couldn't tell and the Corsairs and Haradrim fled and many drowned themselves trying to flee when the ghosts showed up. It's implied the ghosts can't actually hurt you, they're just freaking terrifying.

I get it that's a very old comment but the Dead Army couldn't kill the living in the books. They just scared the shit out of the Corsairs and they jumped in the water. That's why they couldn't be used in pellenor field in the books. (I've never read the books but still would prefer South Army over this. Would be much cooler)

It's questionable whether Aragorn's rights as Lord of Gondor would have given him more control over the undead than Sauron the Necromancer. Just as Aragorn wouldn't have been able to withhold the ring from Sauron because Sauron's right to it was greater than his own, Aragorn probably wouldn't have been able to withhold an army of undead from Sauron or the Ring Wraiths. In fact, in the books, he didn't use the army at Minas Tirith either, but only at Pelagir - after which the ghosts had discharged their oath and left.
