~ i dont like how stupid they depicted some important things, like archers holding the full drown bow to shoot in volleys... . Its quite hard and tiresome to hold shots like this, the elfs/elbs did the same, the enemy has all the time to raise the shields when done so, but if arches would shoot when ready the sky would be full of arrows all the time. Every time they hold fire and wait for a command to release them in this trilogy... . Its plain stupid, but people love it. + how stupid the catapults on this castle are placed, behind the walls would make more sense, but otherwhise the enemy couldnt shoot them down so easy for the cinema. + every wall in this trilogy has no kind of machicolations nor proper crenels. Its like these walls where build only to look good, and not to actually repell an attack on it... . And infront of a castle are normally ditches digged by the defenders, so enemy towers cant just roll straight to the walls. A simple spikewall or two, with ditches digged would have stopped these horsemen. And every single besieging force builds that in the first few hours, otherwhise enemys can just walk into like shown here. So yes, for a fictional universe, inhabitatet by idiots, its a good trilogy and great scenes.

@@wodrapixel2818 to be fair, in history there have been many dumb decisions made by generals and rulers regarding their armies and fortresses. and yes this is a movie things need to be a bit more theatrical than in real life. also i think the book itself has some explanation to certain things, i think in the book it's mentioned the horses of the rohirim aren't regular horses like real ones, they are much stronger and faster since they are of a breed that isn't real but exists in the LOTR world.

Ehh… You should be fair to the Hobbit movies. They didn't have the time to properly render the CGI, nor did they have the time to actually polish the scripts, etc. It takes time to make practical effects on a large scale, and unfortunately the studio didn't give Peter Jackson time for pre-production, which the LOTR films had over a year of.

@quillquickcard8824
@quillquickcard8824 2 года назад
Fear of death was a central tenant of Morgoth's corruption, and so is carried within all of his corrupted creatures. Dragons, Balrogs, Trolls, and Orcs are all ultimately cowards, by design. They all fear death and, absent a force forcing them to face it, will flee it. Break the line and an orc army will scatter, as they did upon the plains before Gondor.
@gordonlekfors2708
@gordonlekfors2708 2 года назад
doesn't make a lot of sense though. panning over the army of orcs they look densely packed in formation, and there's about 100.000 of them, and yet the rohirrim still tramples them and rides through somehow. where's the space for them to ride like that?
@kaiserirgendwer4622

@@gordonlekfors2708 if you notice, a little before the impact, the orcs break formation. The only reason (even in real wars during the Middle Age) why pikesmen were able to stop the charge of cavalry was because of their formation. If even only one man faultered, the entire formation was doomed. That's why you can see the Rohirrim roam free. There was no formation along the Orcs.

So realistic in terms of historical battle tactics too. Most movies have terrible battle scenes but somehow this 20 year old movie absolutely not only nailed it cinematically but also realistically. The way the orc leader shouts commands to form ranks, telling pikemen to get to the front. They also form an accurate formation, digging their pikes into the ground pointing the spear upwards towards the horses. And we actually get to see a cavalry charge. Normally in movies the two lines meet and it instantly turns into movie style 1v1s. So much detail was put into these movies in many ways.

I've always loved Theoden's arc in these movies, it's very subtle. A King, with no heir and no hope for a legacy. He is the last of his line. His forefathers all carry with them great achievements. What does he have? What magnificent thing has he done? His Kingdom had nearly been on the brink of defeat. Then, despite Gondor having done nothing for him. He goes to their aid. He rallies his people. Taking them into a battle he knows they have very little chance to win, but one they must fight. Even if it costs them everything they have. He and his people will not perish meekly, they WILL be remembered. In essence, Theoden proves himself as a King. That he rallied his people against something insurmountable. Even though he dies here, he dies knowing that he did everything he could, and he will not feel ashamed in the midst of his forefathers.

Especially when you contrast him with his Gondorian counterpart: Denethor. Both are old men, having seen many tragedies in their lives. Both have lost their sons. Both are under attack by their greatest enemy. Both want to leave a good legacy for their ancestors. Both succumbed to despair. Theoden, though, rose up. He fulfilled his oaths. He acted in such a way as to be honored by all. He rallied his nation and people, leading them to victory. When he died, he was universally mourned. Denethor, by contrast, figuratively (and literally) fell. He disgraced his line in his despair, failed his people, and were it not for Aragorn and Theoden’s timely arrivals, would have seen his nation and people destroyed. His only consolation was knowing that he didn’t murder his own son before his own death.

At that sound the bent shape of the king sprang suddenly erect. Tall and proud he seemed again; and rising in his stirrups he cried in a loud voice, more clear than any there had ever heard a mortal man achieve before: Arise, arise, Riders of Théoden! Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter! spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered, a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises! Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor! With that he seized a great horn from Guthláf his banner-bearer, and he blew such a blast upon it that it burst asunder. And straightway all the horns in the host were lifted up in music, and the blowing of the horns of Rohan in that hour was like a storm upon the plain and a thunder in the mountains. Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor! Suddenly the king cried to Snowmane and the horse sprang away. Behind him his banner blew in the wind, white horse upon a field of green, but he outpaced it. After him thundered the knights of his house, but he was ever before them. Éomer rode there, the white horsetail on his helm floating in his speed, and the front of the first éored roared like a breaker foaming to the shore, but Théoden could not be overtaken. Fey he seemed, or the battle-fury of his fathers ran like new fire in his veins, and he was borne up on Snowmane like a god of old, even as Oromë the Great in the battle of the Valar when the world was young. His golden shield was uncovered, and lo! it shone like an image of the Sun, and the grass flamed into green about the white feet of his steed. For morning came, morning and a wind from the sea; and the darkness was removed, and the hosts of Mordor wailed, and terror took them, and they fled, and died, and the hoofs of wrath rode over them. And then all the host of Rohan burst into song, and they sang as they slew, for the joy of battle was on them, and the sound of their singing that was fair and terrible came even to the City.

No doubt, good vs evil is more of an overarching concept than a theme from itself, but the choices that men do is definetely among one of the most important things Tolkien wanted to display, and how men that do evil acts are usually corrupted by fear, usually its the fear of death that leads to men's downfall in Tolkien's mythology. We can see that was at led to the downfall of the greatest kingdom of men Numenor, but at the other aspect, conquering this fear leads to amazing accomplishments like the House of Hador did in the battles of the first age, and how Theoden and the Rohan riders did in this battle of the Pelennor Fields.

At last he halted once again. The City was now nearer. A smell of burning was in the air and a very shadow of death. The horses were uneasy. But the king sat upon Snowmane, motionless, gazing upon the agony of Minas Tirith, as if stricken suddenly by anguish, or by dread. He seemed to shrink down, cowed by age. Merry himself felt as if a great weight of horror and doubt had settled on him. His heart beat slowly. Time seemed poised in uncertainty. They were too late! Too late was worse than never! Perhaps Théoden would quail, bow his old head, turn, slink away to hide in the hills. Then suddenly Merry felt it at last, beyond doubt: a change. Wind was in his face! Light was glimmering. Far, far away, in the South the clouds could be dimly seen as remote grey shapes, rolling up, drifting: morning lay beyond them. But at that same moment there was a flash, as if lightning had sprung from the earth beneath the City. For a searing second it stood dazzling far off in black and white, its topmost tower like a glittering needle: and then as the darkness closed again there came rolling over the fields a great boom. Fey he seemed, or the battle-fury of his fathers ran like new tire in his veins, and he was borne up on Snowmane like a god of old, even as Oromë the Great in the battle of the Valar when the world was young.

They followed their king into battle, for the sake of all mankind. They followed a humble man whose bloodline had already ended, and who charged into battle and almost certain death for sake of all sons and daughters of Edoras and Gondor and indeed the children of all the realms of man. His sword ablaze by the heat of his courage, becoming a flame burning against the looming darkness. They would follow him, to whatever end awaited them, for their faith in the man that leads them was greater than any fear that strikes their hearts.

greeks had phalanx. you probably mean testudo. the barbarians won because they used guerilla tactics, not because they simply fought without fear of death. bravery doesnt break a well equipped and disciplined line of soldiers. all the bravery in the world wont help you when youre facing a roman legion in open field. thats why the number 1 priority of every commander facing rome was to lure them into bad terrain, where their formations were useless or not effective.

@@Mode-Selektor That is speculation from the OP, but it is very likely Theoden, who was born and educated in Minas Tirith felt immense rage seeing Mundburg burn and monsters at the gate. What is fact:- Thengel, disgusted by his fat, wasteful father Fengel moved to Minas Tirith and met Theoden's mother there, only returning when his father died. Theoden was born in Minas Tirith as was Theodwyn (Eomer and Eowyn's mother). In his court Sindarin (the educated language in Gondor) was spoken, and not all the Rohirrim liked it. After the Pelennor Fields, Theoden lays in state in a chamber of Minas Tirith, where later Imrahil offers Eomer to lay the old king permanently in a Gondorian tomb alongside the Kings and Stewards, as he was born in Gondor. Eomer refuses the gracious offer and Theoden is returned to Rohan where he is buried at the end of the second line of mounds. The tragedy of Theoden is that he never managed to set foot in Minas Tirith again, dying in front of its gates under his fallen horse.

Actually, most of Tolkien's artistic vision was misunderstood and trampled on by the movies. For instance, in the book, it's the death of the Witch King that turns the battle, meaning that mankind is saved by the courage of two unlikely soldiers who went to a war they were unprepared for driven by a love so powerful it allowed them to face down the living incarnation of fear itself. In the movies, mankind is saved by a magic sword summoning a big invincible army. In the former it's the strength of men's hearts that claims victory, in the latter it's strength of arms. It quite spoils the impact. But, the movies were very lovingly made, and all criticism aside... They did this one scene perfectly. They're still very good movies, but I don't think Tolkien would enjoy them.

Like, "Yes, that's about what I expected. Could have been a lot worse. I'm glad people enjoyed it." I think that's the key part. People enjoyed the movies and they were lovingly made. Tolkien says in the foreword that his number one priority is that people enjoy and are moved by his story. That said, I didn't know the guy, I just have read some of his author's notes and am a (fairly poor) author myself so I can try to empathise with the mentality.

imagine you're a gondor soldier fighting on the walls of minas tirith. You look outside the wall and realize there are still thousands of orcs, it's over for you. You move away from the wall and go closer to the citadel to barricade yourself with the others as it is certain death you're facing . Suddenly you hear a horn blow away in the fields, you don't know either these are allies or more orcs coming to finish you off as you don't have many allies, you are lost, afraid, hopeless, desperate. The orcs have begin to break your door down, and suddenly you hear it lightly through all the screaming and yelling around you, a faint "death" coming from the distance, you hear it three times and everytime is it getting louder, you know that's a human voice. You run and peak through a window to see your ancient ally charging down a hill in thousands and chanting death. You see them charging with no fear even through arrows as death means nothing to them at this point. It's either them or the orcs. after a few seconds you hear it, the loud armor crash of the horses trampling hundreds of orcs. Hope is relinquished, humanity is saved and gondor is in debt to rohan once more.

The line "Courage, Merry. Courage for our friends" will never not get to me. Sure, this series has its epic speeches, and larger than life Men, but it's lines like this, from a woman and a Hobbit, that truly shows bravery. Eowyn is a beast, and her courage, along with Merry's unshakable bravery for Pippin and Gandalf, are where my heart resonates strongest.

Suddenly the king cried to Snowmane and the horse sprang away. Behind him his banner blew in the wind, white horse upon a field of green, but he outpaced it. After him thundered the knights of his house, but he was even before them. Éomer rode there, the white horsetail of his helm floating in his speed, and the front of the first Éored roared like a breaker foaming to the shore, but Théoden could not be overtaken.

"Ride for ruin and the worlds ending" The Rohirrim weren't just looking over an enormous army in the Pelennor fields, they were looking at the engine that was designed to crush and subjugate all of Middle Earth and mankind with it. They were looking at, in a sense, the end of the world. And they charged into it at a sprinters pace. A hopeless cause shouldn't ever be met with hopelessness, it should be met with defiance. Those orcs can break the body, but only hopelessness can break the soul and true death only comes when both body and soul are destroyed. Even if Mordor won, the men of the west would never have lost

This. Literally Theodin's speech is about how they are riding into death, but they have no fear. Even when the arrows start bringing down horses, even as they get close, even as they are fighting to defend the people that wouldn't help them... They still fight. This is really the most fantastic thing about LOTR that there are many characters that you can consider as hero. Tolkien has given the readers the space to pick their own heroes. And It's also interesting that this epic tale ends without the typical hero vs villain face off at the end. Its also interesting that the villain Sauron absolutely has no active role in the main story, never came out off his residence or uttered a single dialogue and yet he kept his presence felt all the time. The hero never met the villain in person or faced him in a battle, and yet defeated the villain. No body really killed Sauron. Frodo got possessed by the ring and refused to throw it away, Gollum knocked down Sam and jumped on top of Frodo and snatched the ring and Frodo fought back to get it back and both fell down where Frodo surviving but Gollum finally winning the very last moment before dying and ring was where it was supposed to be: into the fires of Mount Doom. Outside the Black gate Aragorn, Gandalf and the others could not lay a scratch on Sauron, but won in the end. Everyone including Gollum performed their joint effort to bring the villain down. The credit goes to everyone. No other novel shall give you such an epic situation.

This scene gives an idea of how terrifying cavalry charges were back in their day. The warrior or knight on horseback could wield heavier weapons (because the charging horse, rather than the arms of the wielder, gave the momentum to the weapon) and the horse was at least half a ton coming at you at 30 miles per hour with metal-shod hooves churning the ground and the mass of them sounding like rolling thunder. The closest modern equivalent would be seeing a battalion of tanks rolling toward you at full speed. It was like a living storm of thunder, hot breath, rage, and steel bearing down on you like the judgement of a wrathful god.

@@timpuckeridge6061 They show that with the relief charge that Theoden's son leads against the Uruk-hai at the gates of Mordor. The Uruk-hai set long pikes in place to intercept the cavalry charge (as they have the benefit of Saruman's superhuman wisdom, as when he supplies them with a gunpowder bomb to breach the walls of Gondor), Gandalf's counter-tactic is to harness the dawn's light into a bright flash of light from his staff that blinds the light-sensitive Uruk-hai (who are orc/goblin crossbreeds) momentarily at a critical moment, causing enough of them to move or drop their pikes to open the defenses.

Imagine how absolutely terrifying this must have been for the orcs. Up to now, they thought that the battle was won. That Minas Tirith was about to fall. And then just as they're about to win, a horde of the angriest riders in the Middle Earth arrive, screaming "death" as loud as they can. The orcs loose volley after volley of arrows at them, but not only does it fail to stop them, it doesn't even so much as slow their charge. The set up pikes, but the horsemen keep charging with so little care, its almost mind boggling. If it wasn't for the Haradrim, Sauron would have lost here and now.
@MrBlueBurd0451
@MrBlueBurd0451 2 года назад
The most text book depiction of a heavy cavalry charge ever. Once that wall of horses is moving at a full gallop, nothing short of pure distance can stop it or even hope to slow it down. Thousands of pounds of metal and flesh is bearing down on you. Arrows? You might fell a few. Pikes? You might fell a few more. But the sheer energy in the charge, you cannot stop. You cannot slow. Even if the riders in the front themselves would wish to slow, those behind them would not permit it, and overtake them. This is what broke countless armies in real life history as well. Even the simple threat alone of such a thing occurring routed armies whole.
