Lotus Elise rear-ended (inside cam)

My Elise was heavily damaged when it was struck from behind by another driver who hadn't seen it slow in traffic. My wife was driving at the time, you can see the outside cam here: • Lotus Elise rear-ended...
Update 5th April 2021 - seems RU-vid's algo is recommending this old video to the world - hi everyone! Some more info based on the comments:
- The car was badly damaged but fully repaired at a cost of about £6k. It's in my garage right now waiting to be used when the UK's weather is a little better :-)
- My wife wasn't hurt, she had a sore neck for a few days, but didn't require any medical treatment.
- The speed of impact was estimated by the police to be about 45-50mph.
- The driver who hit my car was prosecuted by the police for driving without due care and attention. From memory the person received a small fine and had to do a 'driver awareness course' which is quite common in the UK.
- When we go out as a family, my wife is usually that one that drives, she's always been the better driver out of both of us! :-)
If you would like to know more about these cool little cars, consider taking a look at SELOC www.seloc.org/

@Jeremy-ff7gv
@Jeremy-ff7gv 3 года назад
@@kainoa3078 actuallý best way to stop after an accident is to let ur car rollout on the sidestrip or grasstrip,incase ur leaking fuel/oil it will not immediately engulf ur car and give u time to get out safely...offcourse if u only talk about stuff u read in a magazine without ever suffering thru such an event urself u dont know the REAL dangers of a crash,nomatter at what speed u drive...also she lost her brakes bcuz her seat got thrown back as i read her husband stated,not bcuz u lose brakes after being rear-ended...u truelly a special kind of stupid if u think u can lose full brake fluid pressure in an instant when hit,goes to show how uneducated u are yet still spouting utter bs u read in ur cosmo magazine🤣
@Jeremy-ff7gv
@Jeremy-ff7gv 3 года назад
@Danbu Hsma u cant...there r only 2 ways to lose immediate braking power,1 is by having ur engine stall on older cars which will mess up the abs sensor thus no input to brakes is given...nr2 is by having both ur brake lines broken DURING heavy load which can cause ur car to spew out braking fluid in a rapid manner tho that would have to be a big break in the lines lol...this woman didnt get hit hard enough to snap those lines and neither did her car stall out thus the braking abs sensor still works until she comes to a deadstop and her engine cuts out...there are 0 other ways off immediately cutting ur brakepower,even snapping all brakelines will take over 10mins for the system to fully run empty and lose all hydraulic pressure in order to engage said brakes...maybe u once had a car without brakes but that would mean u driven it awhile with ruptured braking fluid lines or u got hit so hard both ur lines snapped and u still pressed the pedal hard in which case u will not be able to calmly pull ur handbrake as the force of the hit alone would render u unconscious...cars got 2 ways of providing braking power,1 is with older cars that use low pressure from ur engine to engage the hydraulics and the 2nd is with newer cars in electric relay.both still give u some braking power if ur rear ended without stalling,even if ur lines got busted u can still come to a relatively fast stop so dont try to be a keyboard warrior like 99percent of the peeps here and actually do ur homework on combustion engines and their relativity towards stopping power

A jagged broken rear axle, hub shearing, alloy wheel breaking, and any other number of sudden knife-edged shards could *easily* cut a brake line and cause an instant catastrophic loss of brake pressure and fluid. As for the "I'd never buy a car that does that" idiocy, similar events have happened in the highest form of motorsport, F1, in the past several years. It's not an automobile's fault or design fault when there is a sidden unintended massive impact to the rear of a vehicle, it's simple *PHYSICS* , and until the day that manufacturers make 100% unbreakable parts yet still manage to safely disipate g-forces to the occupant, it will happen again and again.

A great car and a great driver. She even managed to avoid the Ford Focus in front using the handbrake. Having owned two VX220s I do love how these cars drive. But I get a little fed up with all the ways they try to kill you, brake failure after being rear ended is not on, naughty car. The VX220s standard gearbox likes to squirt oil onto the near side rear tyre when driven hard on track, that's just one of a few things it has up it's sleeve.

It wasn't a brake failure, the impact pushed the seat back quite a distance which made it harder to brake normally (look at the seat at 1 second and then 10 seconds). I've never had an oil leak either, maybe that's a VX issue? But yeah, little cars like these are more vulnerable on the road, you do need to keep a constant vigilance for others who may not have seen you.

Beautiful reaction, very aware to her surroundings to the point she knew the impact was coming. Handled not being able to fully depress the brakes, due to the seat moving backward slightly, beautifully by using the e-brake to compensate (especially with these vehicles, which, as I understand, have much less brake pedal assistance since they're more track oriented). Even looks like she made the decision to 2-hand the e-brake after ensuring the vehicle was tracking straight enough to be a better risk vs reward than not doing so. Absolutely sucks that it happened but her reaction was brilliant.

Pay close attention to the first second of the video. She's already watching her rear view mirror waiting for the driver that is tailgating her to take his eyes off the road probably looked over his shoulder at the big truck. Then she doesn't slam on the brakes she downshifted to third and suddenly decelerated you can see this out the driver window she's traveling at a pace slower than the truck but that pace slows down much more drastically after she downshifts. She did not apply the brakes notice her right leg did not move. Also the distance and speed that she traveled after being hit suggests she did not suddenly slow down to avoid hitting something nor was she paying attention forward enough to see and react to something in front of her. Ask a traumatologist. When drivers break their wrists/arms during a crash it's generally due to tension on the steering wheel. No hands, or relaxed grip is best to avoid these injuries. That's what racing drivers do the same. I would even go so far to say that she may be a pro driver after seeing her overall reaction. Wrists, ankles, knees and elbows are the worst for bone rebuilds, lots of tiny, interconnected, bones in there.
