I love how Stanley Turrentine doesn't want to walk across the stage in front of Lou. And Lou notices and steps ahead so Stanley can walk on behind him. What class!
Definitely these folk give us a taste of the heavenly sound. The only instrument missing is a trumpet player (Gabriel) a la Louis Armstrong.but I guess here Lou is filling that position.with his voice.
The groove, just that groove, nothing but the groove.., of the blues. It is the sonnet of jazz, the red beans and rice of the righteous blues, the satisfaction of soul, the food of our feelings, the way to BE, properly...
In 1967 I was 5 years old, my mom and dad bought an 8 track of Lou Rawls live in a small club. I'm 58 now and still remember standing on the back seat of the car listening to Lou sing with Tommy Stone on the piano and being enthralled by his voice. I sang along with those songs and claimed Lou as my favorite singer of all time, and still do today. thanx for this vid and the great memories. It's awesome that his audience here gets it too.
I found a box of old cassettes sent from my uncle who worked for Columbia back in the 60s, a mixed tap of hits of back then, with two Lou Rawls songs I still can't find anywhere (last time I looked). Trouble down here below and some other gospel/funky tune wow ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-B8MligdhHzI.htmlsi=z0oX6xYI-17yLO7j
Now this is what I call the real OG's.. Hahaha! Gangsters professionnels et al.(smile)..You are so right, watching it again made me realize,we witnessed the best of the last.."Style/Charisma".. My Thanks! ;-)
I learned of this artist when I was, what - 15?... and I baby-sat for a woman who had his music in her house. I have loved him for nearly five decades. How cool is that? He is the quintessential man of soulful blues.
Great, great performance! Stanley, the classy sax man with that Cadillac sound was the perfect icing on the cake to make this really stand out. Complementing Lou's vocals & burnin on his solo...mission accomplished! Miss them both...
James - I am with you! - I will be 78 in April and I have been a jazz fan (Coltrane is my musical hero) since I first heard Poinciana by Ahmad in 1959 - I saw Les and his trio at The Bit, where THE SHOUT was recorded, in the early 60's and Lou Rawls has always been a favorite of mine! - "KEEP ENJOYING THE SOUNDS OF JAZZ"
Me too! . Listened to this a few years ago and there was a black female singing with him. Do you remember her name. She was awesome too. Love this version . 🎶🎹🎷
Doesn't get any better than this. These cats were at the top of their game, and you can hear the influence of the masters that went before them. Talent, class, respect, and pure joy.
What a great classic that's has a good sound being covered by "Lou Rawls", jazzy, classy. and smooth.........With some of the greatest musicians playing for him.........
Mr. Rawls, what a fantastic artist you were, and still is, an exemple for the new generations, I stay so glad when I Herar your songs, so truly, and hionest, they raelly are. May the Almighty bless you Lou....,
Yo aquí en Perú desde los años 94 que esta musica extraordinaria me atrapo nadie me enseño a escucharla yo solo la oi y hasta ahora 2018 la siguió adorando
A great natural, performer and voice. I used to listen to WVON Chicago in the 60's and 70's and got great exposed to wonderful music and artists. Thank you for the video.
@@michellejones2416 been on this one for 10 year now. but the original has got it over this one ("in the evening" with Leroy Vinegar on bass so, sorry young man , on the e bass. but it swung way harder in 1960)
Grew up on this music, from the look of things it would have happened either way.:-D.You still got it Lou, and sharp as ever! "The Eagle still flies on Friday and Saturday out to play."How I wish it was yesterday"... My Thanks... (that timing of the eagle was something else).Enjoyed ;-).
it's the vocal chords layered with whisky and tobacco that gives it the resonance. just kidding. his tone is multi-layered for sure. deep, high, light, heavy, clear, rough all that and more.
The Greats of the Greats. That equals Greatness!!!!. Blessed to have seen Mr. Rawls At the Latin Casino Supper Club Cherry Hill New Jersey and Mr.McCann at a club called Jewel's In Philly at Board & Ridge Ave.I met Mr. Turrentine When he came into the jazz station W.R.T.I. FM 90.1 to do a live interview.Their body of work will live (FOREVER) Much Respect To All.
I gotta tell ya...smokin' Lou Rawls is the best thing for my saturday morning hangover. This number cooks... I feel energized, and ready to rip it hard all over again. let's get it on!!!
but the original studio version of "in the Evening" with Leroy Vinegar on ACOUSTIC bass. swings harder than this. naturally, it does. it always does. e bass can't do what a stand up can for the swing. sorry Jaco and Marcus, but it can't.. And Leroy swings as hard as anybody ever did.
Sometime in the early '80's my late wife, a jazz singer, and I, threw a birthday party for Stanley in Dallas, where he had played at the Fairmount Hotel. Took him to the airport the next morning......boy he couldn't wait to get out of Texas. Really nice man.
Wow. I'm sure Stanley Turrentine was ready to get out of Texas QUICK. My father was from Texas and it was vicious to black folk. Such a violent KKK presence and lynchings it was UNREAL. It's not as bad as it was in the '50s-'70s but it still is incredibly racist especially towards blacks. There are a lot of Hispanics but they tend to assimilate a little better yet they've got it tough. RIP Stanley Turrentine and Lou Rawls.
Lou went to high-school with my grandmother on the Southside of Chicago & I love when he says " I'm going to Chicago "! ( I live in Louisiana) I say let's go home lou!! Tired of these hurricanes
@@kevingillette3258 I have been a fan for years, used pick up quite a lot of his albums when I was in London, not many were available back home in Australia, great voice!
I've been listening to this two to three times a day for the past 3 weeks and this downright infectious. I've been searching for this on CD format. But I haven't had any luck. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
