After sorting a water pump on a Leon, our video ending was interrupted by the loudest cams we have ever had in our workshop! 📣
Of course they could only belong to a 2.5 TDi Transporter with 264,000 miles on the clock!
But just wait until you see the condition of the lifters!! 🤯

About 18 months ago my PD130 A4 started getting loud and slow on a trip to Windsor once. Managed to limp it 20 miles to somewhere safe to get recovered. AA man just listened and said "nahhh thats going back on a transporter". I decided to fix it, 4 out of 8 of the followers were in 3 pieces! I fitted a new cam, followers, cam shells and timing belt and it's the sweetest sounding PD130 I've heard for a long time.

My 1.9 pd anniversary did exactly the same thing at 105k. I knew what the noise was with that 2.5 straight away 🤦‍♂️😂

The secret is those bloody PD engines don’t like extended oil service intervals that much. It doesn’t have to be a special fancy PD oil - any good oil will be good. Just do the oil change every 5k miles or 7k miles max and it will be ok. We used to have a van with PD engine in it and it made it to 350kkm with just a decent 10w40 semisyn oil (about ~2 euro/lt).

That is it pal in a nutshell (or case) the manufacturer's oil service intervals are so they get it through warranty period only. You can safely bet on halving the service intervals to get a more accurate estimate, and it's all about driving style and conditions. Minus 40 in seskatchewan compared to Mexico, hard mountain climbing with a full load of a trailer, different oils and different intervals than is recommended definitely, certainly. People are too dumb, and the manufacturers are very candid with information ( cam belt intervals for example) especially bloody VW!!!

Couple lifters on my Caddy had the start of a hole wearing through, the rest were pretty dished. the cam shaft looked pretty sorry for itself as well. Got the full cam kit from you guys to fix it. Running like a dream again.

My 1.9 PD has 240,000 miles on it, still has original clutch, and engines never been touched run it on Mobil 1 esp 5W 30

Like most engines, if they've been well looked after they can be good strong engines. Just the cams are the main issue on these

When replacing the camshaft on the 8V PD engines, is it necessary to "bed in" the camshaft by raising the revs at start-up for a period of 20 mins? I'm seeing differing opinions and answers online. I've not seen any official VW info on it and wondered what you guys do when it comes time to start the engine after one has been replaced, thanks

dont lett this engine idel for long thats why the cams are going bad and lifters becuase on idel its starving on oil in the head to less oil pressure to lumb it good so over time it will where out like that if engine is cold just drive jentel and stay belowe 2.000 rpms till 60° engine

They are different. 2.5's are more prone to the cam issue

No need to lock them if they are being replaced. Just have to do the timing after we'd normally have the car in for a couple of days

What's the issue with it? BTW if that's the 1956 cc Diesel, have the oil pump seal replaced and the conrod big end bearings checked. You can get an aluminium replacement for the original rubber seal.

@@petermolnar8667Cheers but mine is the 2.0 jtdm 170 TI. Bottom end is fine just top end bit tappity but no smoke of any kind and still pulls hard on the motorway. Just think it might just need new lifters maybe ?

hi I have a 330dx f30 2015 just today I have stage 2 in the engine stage 3 in the box I am thinking of changing the turbo and intercooler is that enough or do I have to change the high pressure pump and distributor or can they handle it? roughly how much horsepower do you get out of them? which turbo and intercooler do you recommend? thanks in advance//Nour

@@chrisharding5783 in the T4 is a different 2.5, old VE pump unit, belt driven timing, iron block, basically a 5 cyl 1.9. The T5 has a completely different engine, PD, gear timing, aluminum block with Nikasil bore lining... Then the Crafter has a modernized version of the older 2.5 from the T4 with CR injection.

Ours had 360,000 miles when I sold it. Original engine and gearbox - still running now at 525k original engine. Nout with them if serviced properly

Weight grade doesn't mean anything. Follow the original spec, that's a lot more important.

If you put in the right oil on time, they are pretty good. Has to be said that they are a horrible to work on. In the Touareg it's ok.

Vw recommended a 505 genuine spec for the 1.9 and 2.5 tdi pd engines . As were later specs is 504 507 . But i have found years ago this use to happen with semi synthic cheap oil would burn the lobes out quicker . Generally the 507 oil is fin . First signs of the cam going is smoking and possible emission fails on tests @@Jut123

Not really. Like anything if you don’t look after them they go wrong. You can have more issues with a badly treated 1.9tdi. My 2.5tdi is on 199k and still going strong. Oil changes every 6k without fail still pulls strong 💪

@@Jut123 I just follow the VW recommendations 506.01 compliant. Buy decent oil and change it often. People who have issues either have bought a vehicle that has not been looked after or they don’t look after it themselves. A comprehensive service history is more important than wheels, paint and suspension.
