That's something activated via foot pedal. The hearing impaired can feel it which helps those that can't hear high frequency sound. It's a fairly new addition to the classic wail and yelp combo. We started hearing them in about 2012. Prior to that, from 1987 to 1994, there was a module on select units that was essentially a toggle switch that deepened the siren cycle but it was subtle. From 1995 until 2010, the high pitched wail and yelp were the only options, excluding the horn which can be described as a buzzing sound. There were 2 units that came with sirens that were programmed incorrectly. One had a hyper yelp, extremely rapid looping, the other a hi-lo Euro sound, illegal here. Lastly, note the ambulances no longer have the wig wag headlights that go back a d forth between high and low beam and side to side. This was stopped because drivers mistook the headlights to be directives, guiding them to pull left at times. Also, Santa Cruz county ambulances don't have P.A. Mics anymore because they were being abused. A little 30 year history. Santa Cruz got it's first Paramedics in 1986. The county practiced dual paramedic units for 30 years straight, 1987 until 2017. Last year they started employing EMTs as primary drivers. The longest pvt ambulance service to have dual medic service in the state, 30 years here in Santa Cruz. An EMT who worked in the 70s and early 80s eventually bought Santa Cruz Ambulance and also acquired A1 ambulance out of Watsonville. The company became PACMED in 1989. The local owner then put a deal together to acquire MEDEVAC and SCV, 2 large Santa Clara CO. companies. A 4th, Regional Ambulance from ALAMEDA CO. was also acquired. With this, AMR was founded 25 years ago. Today, it's one of the largest ambulance companies in the nation. It all started here in Santa Cruz by an EMT who was a smart businessman. In the early 90s, he rose to become the CEO of the National company. He took the company public and retired not long after. Quite a history. From the small building off Ocean street behind MARIANNES ICE CREAM where the local ops was for 53 years to Colorado and beyond. That is the brief history of the a.ambulance you video rolling down the street.

Private ambulance...... America is weird.....

PBMS123 You pay to play. I've never called an ambulance.....even in the face of 2 displaced, badly fractured lower legs, skull fracture, jaw fracture, 2 arm fractures, pelvic fracture...you get the point. So I don't pay anything. Most public services in America..wait for it...NOT ONLY CHARGE VIA TAX BASE...BUT ARE ALSO BILLING SEPERATELY FOR THE "PUBLIC AMBULANCE." That is weird...

The whole US healthcare system is wrong over there.... I'm not sure what you are trying to say about not calling an ambulance, except that maybe you're a bit stupid...

PBMS123 Why say something like that? I realize the healthcare system is very screwed up? Why would you insult me personally? I was making a point that there are very few that really need ambulances. Therefore, in a pvt system, I DON'T have to pay for all those that think they need ambulances. On the whole, I suffer the cost even still as it pertains to the ED and the care they provide.

A broken pelvis and skull fracture, and you didn't call an ambulance. Oh god, it's so awful that you have to help pay for the emergency healthcare of others, jesus, how awful, it's almost as if people might think we have a responsibility to care for people.
