Louis Armstrong, nicknamed Satchmo or Pops, was an American jazz trumpeter and singer from New Orleans, Louisiana.
Coming to prominence in the 1920s as an "inventive" cornet and trumpet player, Armstrong was a foundational influence in jazz, shifting the focus of the music from collective improvisation to solo performance. With his instantly recognizable deep and distinctive gravelly voice, Armstrong was also an influential singer, demonstrating great dexterity as an improviser, bending the lyrics and melody of a song for expressive purposes. He was also greatly skilled at scat singing (vocalizing using sounds and syllables instead of actual lyrics).
Renowned for his charismatic stage presence and voice almost as much as for his trumpet-playing, Armstrong's influence extends well beyond jazz music, and by the end of his career in the 1960s, he was widely regarded as a profound influence on popular music in general. Armstrong was one of the first truly popular African-American entertainers to "cross over", whose skin-color was secondary to his music in an America that was severely racially divided. He rarely publicly politicized his race, often to the dismay of fellow African-Americans, but took a well-publicized stand for desegregation during the Little Rock Crisis. His artistry and personality allowed him socially acceptable access to the upper echelons of American society that were highly restricted for a black man.
Louis Armstrong -- Satchmo At His Best - Legends In Concert Also featured is footage of Armstrong playing with such jazz greats as Lionel Hampton and Jack Teagarden. Most of the performances are in black and white as it was made up using archive footage. In his early 20s, Armstrong moved to New York, where his music influenced many top musicians of the time.

Thanks so much for posting. My dad, Sid Davilla, was a jazz musician and had a nightclub on Bourbon Street in the 50's and 60's. I have a picture of Satchmo with my parents taken a year before I was born. It's something I really treasure! When I posted it on Facebook, my friends were awestruck!

I just finished listening to that whole 55 minute show. There were several times that I could not resist moving my shoulders and/or feet to the beat! My heart was light-weight and I smiled, just lost in his wonderful music and his voice! . . . Now it's over and I feel that loss. . . . It's a good thing that there's more Louise Armstrong videos here on RU-vid! And I'm glad that I have some of his albums on CD!

Sactchmo is really a pathfinder for all Trumpeters as he was perfect in an effortless approach to add grace notes & glisandos and this really added to the texture of the piece played & that too spontaneous.

This video is full wide variety of great performances, all in their entirety, MANY of which I have never seen before. Louis is playing at a high level of swing, technical perfection and beautiful high notes, endless endurance, never surpassed over decades. When I was 19 years old, Louis treated me like I was an old friend, showed me his mouthpiece and spirits of nitre for the chops.(And Swiss Kriss).A creative genius who joyed in God;s gifts,

I’ve been a rock n roller all my life but I love this music and I get it. I like all music that is good. Seems like mostly all the good music’s been done ‘cause you never hear anything that good anymore. Whether it’s Louis or Miller or Dizzy or Miles or Dylan or Lennon we’ll never hear anything better again. And Louis was one of the best of the best. Thank the stars for recordings. And thank you for posting this.

One of my most treasured possesions and memories.

Thanks for posting. ... and as a long time member of the Louis Armstrong House Museum , I strongly recommend anyone visiting NYC to make the pilgrimage to this "mecca." The story behind Louis' residence--thanks to his wife Lucille--and the creation of the museum, with it's recent upgrades-will give you an even greater insight to his greatness as a musician and human being. Truly a gem , and great way to stay connected with all things Satchmo.
