"If, at some point, you think that it is foolish or boring to just sit here and watch your breath go in and out, note to yourself that this is just a thought, a judgment that your mind is creating. Then simply let go of it and bring your attention back to your breathing. If the feeling is very strong, try the following additional experiment, which we sometimes suggest to our patients who feel similarly bored with watching their breathing: Take the thumb and first finger of either hand, clamp them tightly over your nose, keep your mouth closed, and notice how long it takes before your breathing becomes very interesting to you!" /Jon Kabat-Zinn/
first track: sounds like there's a descending sine getting triggered by the kick. how do you acoustically get that kind of quick pitch decay in a kick (or is Louis just triggering)?
@@gloverelaxis maybe its parallel lowpassed then distorted then combined with the dry signal again and then compressed or something? i suppose just distorting only low frequencies could kinda give an effect like this since the high end is less prominent and thus the whole thing seems to drop in pitch? im probably wrong but that would be my guess.
This is actually a great tutorial because it really shows how important it is to start off slowly. People have a habit of going way too fast when trying to learn things for the first time, but ya gotta learn to play it slow before ya can play it fast.
also it's typically "harder" to play slow and really in the groove, so even if you can technically play it fast, practicing slow helps the groove thang
As a guitarist, this took me damn near 7 years to actually accept. Eventually I got to a point in my playing where I couldn't just speed my way through something and have it sound really good. It still pains me to play shit slowly, but it's absolutely necessary to develop the proper technique.
was thinking about learning louis cole grooves yesterday but could find none thank you louis cole for addressing this and reading my mind have a nice day
I think Zach and Louis would actually blend in a very interesting way. I'd love to hear them play together. Zach Hill can really lay down a groove when he wants.
2:59 this beat is genius in so many ways, but the biggest thing is how he gets different sounds by sometimes muting the snare with the base of his palm, both when doing the side stick, and when hitting with his left stick on the snare.
I have always loved every aspect of your amazing musicality, but your drumming is what blows me away the most. You are truly gifted and thank you for sharing your gift with all of us
I got extremely lucky because I got to see him in December. I wasn't sure exactly what he meant by "big band" but my hopes was that it was a setup the same or similar to his "live sesh" band and that's exactly what it was! All of those musicians are incredible but I was so happy to see Sam Wilkes and Jacob Mann on stage doing their thing. Whenever all of this Covid nightmare is over and Louis is able to do shows again, make sure you go. You won't regret it.
What an absolute legend. Its not only the talent for drummin he has, but also the ear for the frequency og sound production. Clowncore sound would not be the same with out him.
This guy has so much talent. He regularly writes beats that dwarf the amen break. If entire genres of music were born of a 6 second drum sample... I wonder how much music Louis Cole will go on to inspire?
How the F do you get your kick to sound so electronic? All the compressors and saturators are on point for everything, but that kick sounds unreal (especially in the first beat)
My bass drum sound: Smaller drum 16”-20”. Ambassador heads (sometimes hole) No muffling inside the kick drum. Some muffling outside of both heads (a rag leaning up against the head). Tune all bolts loose on resonant side. Medium tension on hitting side with 2-3 bolts fully loose (pasted from twitter)
Hehe, yeah. It feels like an aesthetic: cheap looking kit, cheap midi keyboard, lo-fi/retro/intentionally amateurish graphics, insane skills. I love it.
I'm in the same boat. My brain just can't process my foot movement on top of what my hands are doing. I can do pretty much all these beats without the kick, but as soon as I add it my brain shuts down and the next thing I know, there is a drumstick pierced through the head of one of my toms.
@@gustafsone the trick I've found that works is practice it REAAAAALLLLY slow, like so so it is actually easy, maybe start out at 10BPM, then when you feel comfortable at that speed go up +10BPM
That's the part of this that looks hardest to me. How's he doing it so fast and consistently despite appearing to lift his whole leg each time? Being thin as a rail probably helps, for real, but still, damn
late reply, but in an interview he said he sometimes uses shit like laptop and camera mics for that dirty tone, maybe just mount webcam mics on each drum lol
Louis, as a fellow musician and aspiring drummer let me just say: I really love what you are doing. Thank you for sharing yourself with the world, and keep it up.
I am left handed, and a super nube drummer, and was feeling pressure to just learn right-handed - this gives me confidence to play how I naturally feel I should THANKS
lol, i watched this 4 years ago and found this awesome. Now, this week i have discovered Louis Cole's music for the first time, been listening many tracks on Tidal the last days, went here to RU-vid to find some videos... and i find LOUIS COLE WAS THE SAME GUY WHO MADE THIS MEMORABLE "drum beats" video!!
All the drummers on here are thinking - finally. Nice to see some breakdowns of the beats. Joyous. You have an elegant little finger... (pinkie for the Americans?). Thanks for doing this.
My dude, Not only is this truly helpful, but your skill and style are both incomparable. You are, simply put, one of the coolest and most talented people on the planet. Keep on rockin'; for all of us.
3:03 really reminded me of this beat in the live action tank girl film ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8ric_N_AGD8.html and then i remembered ice-t dressed as a mutant kangaroo, and i wept
Notice the right hand grip. The first finger knuckle bent to form a firm fulcrum. This allows the remaining fingers to pull for increased speed. Also notice the right wrist position not arcing down, this allows the hand from opening to much and helps the fulcrum from opening up.
Can you do an explanation on why you put cymbals on your drums - I love the sound, but I'm curious to the origin. I got turned onto you from your old ass Jungle (DnB?) drumming video and you had the cymbal there (and here). I'm wondering if you learned that from someone else or if that is just a common technique. Are there any other drummers that use that technique that you look up to or recommend?
The shadow on your back totally looked like the dirtiest mullet I've ever seen, in your thumbnail. Can't help but feel a little disappointed after the click.
Mm now do mic placement and compressor tutorial. Because I KNOW it takes more than a couple napkins to make those beats filthier than J.K Rowlings Twitter last year.
Actually would be great, I was wondering the same thing. I guess there are at least 4 mics; kick-snare-an overhead and a trash mic (the sm 57 we see just near the floor tom). The trash mic is probably over compressed and taking the whole kit while mostly concentrated on the kick batter head and the snare). Trash mic is probably the main mic that gives the over compressed nasty feeling and an extra dimension to the sound. Though I wonder about the compression dynamics that are used for the amazing lo-fi sound. I would appreciate any comment regarding the recording setup and effects.
I got the first beat down pretty quickly although I can't get anywhere near as fast as you! Beat 2 is tripping me up and is making me realize one of my biggest shortcomings as a drummer. Even playing slow I'm finding it REALLY hard to marry what my left hand is doing with the snare/ghost notes and what my right hand is doing on the hi-hat. HNNNNNNNNNNNGH
how the fuck are you in knower and also make this shit on the side you are CRIMINALLY underrated my dude. You should be on magazine covers for drumming shit.
It's so awesome to have the actual left handed part written out so I don't have to convert everything in my head, and I can't wait to try out some of the left handed setups in the vid. Awesome tutorial and with no extra work for left handed drummers too :)
Louis, this video has been invaluable to me. I've been working off this video for weeks and weeks and am seeing major improvement in myself. I owe it all to you. P.S. This is also how I found out about your music, which kicks butt!!!
For those that don't get the reference. Beat 1 is the beat from "I love Louis Cole" by Thundercat, a fantastic song that introduced me to this amazing channel.
Brb gonna go break into my church because that's where the nearest known cymbal to my current location is and I really don't want to find out what happens if I don't complete the MANDATORY CYMBAL GRAB.
