Writing about this music is like dancing about architecture! It is an agglomeration of changing images, colors, thoughts and rhythms for the capsizing of the senses!

The late Jean-Francois Paillard had a fantastic orchestra and was a well known director. A great composition this work of Jadin.

I suspect the reason this work is called a Fantaisie Concertante is that it has only two movements, and the second is a set of variations on what I gather was a popular theme in its day, similar if not identical to the one which in Vienna was called the Gassenhauer and which Beethoven used as the basis for the finale of his Trio Op. 10. It was certainly one of the tactics that would garner popular appeal for this work in an age where orchestral music was not lucrative with publishers, particularly not in France.

Thank you for reminding of the 2nd movement was used in Beethoven's trio..i have been thinking for days about where this familiar melody is from..i think i also heard this passage(melody) in Paganini's violin concerto somewhere.. Thanks😊

The early 19th century music in France is sadly neglected, perhaps overshadowed by Berlioz. Boieldieu is a similar late-classical master composer. Le Sueur composed a famous opera, Ossian, that used something like 12 harps, but it has been forgotten, like this work. I'm surprised it hasn't been more popular, but the music must be hard to find.

I recorded this piece on a tape when it was aired on the French radio channel France Musique, decades ago. Where to find a recording of this work? It seems it has not been published, on CD or online...

Try a library. There's a chamber duo on imslp.org, but it's another piece.

The pianist should be breaking his chords as the harpist does.
