The great Canadian baritone Louis Quilico sings Renato's act I aria from Verdi's Un Ballo in Maschera. Riccardo is sung by Luciano Pavarotti and Oscar is Judith Blegen. Metropolitan Opera 1980. Cond. Giuseppe Patane.
I was fortunate during my collegiate studies to sing in the Ft. Worth Opera Chorus for their production of Rigoletto starring Louis Quilico. He was truly amazing, especially in such difficult material, i.e,. range, tessitura, dramatic intensity, standing in a bent posture, etc. And there's lots for Rigoletto to sing! I followed Mr. Quilico after the 1970s, and found that he was still singing amazingly well as he approached the age of 70!
Heard him singing Enrico (Lucia di Lammermoor) in London, early 70´s, with Pavarotti and Sutherland. Another great voice from the golden age of opera now gone forever.
What an incredible experience to have sung with him! I began studying with him in 1990, not regularly but had several lessons whenever he came to New York. It's all still with me. I was lucky to have seen his Rigoletto onstage in '92 when he was 67. He certainly still had it. God bless, Maestro!
Dimenticavo... Bravo Quilico! Cantare da baritono non significa spingere e chiudere forzatamente le vocali. La tecnica giusta implica leggerezza, soavità, tranquillità, anche se si interpreta Renato... Cari baritoni, prendete esempio!!!
oh, sorry. you're right...i guess 2:50 is a high note. and so is 3:51. and so is 4:30. and so is 4:40. those are just so damn high! what on earth could i have been thinking!
