Without doubt, the Berceuse from the 24 Pièces en style libre is Louis Vierne's most performed work. It’s a beautiful cradle song based on a traditional French children’s song and is dedicated to his then seven-year old daughter Colette. A skilful composer, Vierne was a pupil of César Franck at the Paris Conservatoire, continuing his studies with Widor before becoming his assistant at St Sulpice. At the age of 30, Vierne was appointed Organiste Titulaire at Notre-Dame where he remained until his death which befell him during his 1,750th recital.
Vierne had a somewhat troubled life, almost blind since birth, he suffered the loss of many close friends as well as the breakup of his marriage following the revelation of his wife's adultery with Charles Mutin (Cavaillé-Coll's successor). Mutin had actually fathered Colette, the aforementioned dedicatee of this delightful lullaby.
The organs of Aristide Cavaillé-Coll are synonymous with the music of Vierne and the instrument in Nancy Cathedral (sampled for Hauptwerk by @PiotrGrabowski_Organs) is well suited to this music with its evocative strings and floating harmonic flutes.
