Same thing happened to my original drawstring on my Montsouris backpack . Dress up your purse makes the drawstring with the pull and has them in all different levels of patina including the raw white vachetta , I purchased the color I thought matched the patina on my vachetta leather and it matches amazingly . My bottom looks good but the top leather trim has a little rip in it . The canvas is amazing , I think someday soon I am going to have all the vachetta replaced and then retire my Montsouris GM and keep it for my grandson or my granddaughter down the road . I really don’t care about losing the date code that’s on the front buckle part . Later they moved the date codes to the inside d ring vachetta piece but I have a 1990’s version just like you do . I still use mine when I travel to Florida , we go every 2-3 months for a week at a time ,so I bring a carry on roller and my backpack and I usually bring my bum bag for my purse or a crossbody . The carry on and backpack hold everything I need . I didn’t care for the re release of this backpack at all .
