His reign was the longest in world history. In fact, his contemporaries thought the Sun King to be immortal. But in the summer of 1715, Louis XIV finally met his fate and died at the age of 76 in his architectural masterpiece: the Chateau of Versailles. His painful agony due to a devastating disease - gangrene - lasted 23 days and revealed the incompetence of physicians, furtive court intrigues and jealousies. His death caused a crisis of succession with consequences that would affect the whole of Europe. Louis XIV’s passing brought an end to the Grand Siècle and heralded the birth of the Enlightenment.
Louis XIV faced his death with the same panache he had shown throughout his entire reign. It was a magnificent show, a ‘good death’, performed in public. The final act of an extraordinary life that would seal the legend of the greatest king of France.
Filmed in Versailles, Notre-Dame of Paris and at the Basilica of Saint Denis, this film blends historical reconstructions, rare archives, period journals, and the contributions of contemporary experts, to pay homage as never before to the most legendary of France’s kings.
From Elizabeth II to Cleopatra, Real Royalty peels back the curtain to give a glimpse into the lives of some of the most influential families in the world, with new full length documentaries posted every week covering the monarchies of today and all throughout history.

@@deanblanton6804 Also because of his constitution, seemingly able to cope with common illnesses that would've killed most others. And you're right, although he officially took a vertical and total control over the government at the age of 22: with a majestic flourish, dominating the audience and bequeathing to it a horizon of universality symbolized by the enlightening Sun, he proclaimed his transcendence, officially instating the Royal King in its purest form, under the will and devine representation of power (along a rising notion of a Nation and its People)... Which would translate into an effective reign of 54 years. In order to compare with fairness, we'd need to consider the type of effective powers a monarch could or would personally have had, above ageist attitudes: many monarchs had some kind of "regency", either imposed either required (the "sinister minister" lurking on the back, that Richelieu would have been for instance), during decades if not their whole life. Before that age (22) and when he was mature enough to emotionally emancipate himself from his mother's (which happened quite fast after having experienced "the Fronde"), as you mentioned since around the age of 13-14, he would have lived a reign with the obligation to compose with ministers, counselors, plus his mother on his back, along all sorts of most common shenanigans taking place anywhere in a similar context: like some other monarchs, although he was in a "learning-devising" phase... In short, the term "reign" was relative. IMHO, Elizabeth II was the longest-reigning monarch, beginning at age 25. But what kind of a reign, how long -if ever- as a monarch in its purest Royal attributes?... Maybe that's why I loved her, even though I consider myself as a sovereigntist (the tenure of an elegant, distinguished, pleasantly empathetic and respectful person, being more appealing than a mere show of brute-force interference - which was of Ottawa's colonial governance)... But that'd be another story of History.

I had a fistula when I was in college. I didn't seek treatment quickly enough. I walked to class one day and up 3 flights of stairs. When I sat down, the fistula ruptured and the pain caused me to immediately pass out. I woke up in the hospital after the surgery to repair it. I have no memory of anything past climbing the stairs. The rest of the story was relayed to me by my roommate, who had walked with me to class (We were in the same period). It took me six months to recover. @brontewcat
@brontewcat Год назад
@@kaloarepo288 The average life span was shorter in the past as you said because of the high death rate of children. As long as he was not a soldier, once a man lived past their 5th birthday, he tended to live a lot longer than 40. Contemporary monarchs of Louis lived into their 60s and 70s. Although as you noted enduring surgery in those days was a feat.
@kaloarepo288
@kaloarepo288 Год назад
@@brontewcat I realize that the upper classes had longer lifespans as did the clergy but don't forget that there were many diseases and conditions that are relatively easy to control today that were lethal then -e.g.diabetes .Other great killers or maimers were small pox and syphilis .Also the upper classes often had no idea concerning a suitable diet and gorged themselves on fatty and sugary foods giving them strokes or terrible teeth.If you could avoid falling into the hands of the doctors you probably had a better chance to survive unlike today!!!!Bleeding seemed to have been the supposed cure for every malady.In the time of Louis XIV kings still personally led troops into battle and the last British king to do so was George II in the battle of Dettingen which was about 1742.Personally I think one of the major reasons for longevity today besides hygiene is mental attitude.The mindset then was that everything was foreordained and you could not take much control of your destiny and you went through a life with ritual type stages.Nowadays even elderly people tend to have the mindset of youth -these can be seen in the way they dress and their hobbies -they attempt to delay the ageing process through positive attitude.

However he became king as a 4 year old. The Queen is the longest reigning monarch as an adult. I am not talking about ruling, just the length of reigns as an adult. All of these records are qualified in some way. The late Queen is the longest reigning monarch (of either a sovereign or a non sovereign realm) as an adult whose reign can be verified. I am not quite sure how the fact Louis XIV was an actual ruler, rather than a constitutional monarch changes the fact he was considered a child for at least a decade into his reign. Edit: The longest reigning monarch, whose reign is verified by historical record, is Sobhuza II of Swaziland. To say Louis XIV has the longest reign one has to add the qualification of a sovereign country. If a further qualification is added of an adult reign, then the record changes again. I really am very surprised at the number of people who feel the need to push back at the idea of looking at reigns as adult monarchs.

One of the things that must be realised is that Louis XIV only believed his incompetent doctors who were still practicing medieval medicine (humours, bloodletting and such nonsense). New-fangled ideas and progress in medicine routinely had been cast aside by him. This means he did not receive good treatment himself. It greatly frustrated his entourage. For instance, in the Netherlands, van Leeuwenhoek had invented the microscope and saw bacteria. Herman Boerhave, also Dutch, made medicine make a giant leap forward. It was all rejected by Louis XIV.

If one is to brag about King Louis XIV, I should think it would be most about his great accomplishments in every field. I understand he rarely slept, worked all the time. He brought in the Age of Enlightenment, did he not? But sadly, Versailles is currently conflicted in presentation due to the Napoleon influence... I agree w/others commenting that he isn't the longest reigning monarch in world history. Still, The Sun King deserves a lot of respect; he did a lot of good for all time.

@cooglerHere

@@nancywages7029 Hey, Nancy: See the most recent virtual tour of Versailles. Lots of Nap junk over imposed & seems to be the major emphasis of the tour, practically forgetting The Sun King entirely because Nap took up residence there during his little stint as emperor. I thought it a major shame. The Sun King was incredible w/massive accomplishments, but at age 4 didn't get much reigning in, more like playing in for quite a while before getting to work. Still, "Pharaoh Pepi II was the longest reigning monarch spanning 94 years." ER, Elizabeth the Great, comes in as the longest reigning adult monarch.

The French Livre was equivalent to a Pound, but a Pound of Silver, which by then was usually represented as a gold coin, like the Sovereign Gold coin in the UK. That's £299.68 GBP in modern prices for a Pound of Silver, using actual imperial and not US "imperial", giving a total of £599,360,000 GBP in modern prices.

King Loius XIV was born in 1638 and though he was proclaimed King in 1643, after his father died, he was only 5 years old. Therefore, his mother Queen Anne and Cardinal Mazanin actually reigned in his place untill 1653, and Mazanin on his own until 1661. Therefore, Louis didn't actual reign until 1661 and he died in 1715 aged 77. Which equals 54 years, nothing like the 70 year reign of the 96 year old Queen Elizabeth II.
