It's really infantile when people treat new versions of good movies, or new renditions of songs, as if it were a crime. Good scripts and music DESERVE to be refreshed. Besides, no one is forcing any of those childish people to see or hear the new ones.

I love both endings, and while acknowledging the superb acting here, my preference is still the Grant-Kerr ending. The musical scoring in the 1957 version is amazing - for example, when Grant is about to leave the apartment.. The moment in the bedroom where he closes his eyes after seeing the painting and the tender moments on the couch afterward are among the most evocative in all of film. The emotion in that final Grant-Kerr scene always chokes me up, while not so much with Boyer-Dunne.
@The22on

I liked Grant/Kerr. The only thing I preferred in the early version was how the director showed the painting. It was bigger and more important looking. That's a minor point, though.I also liked the way Kerr delivered her lines better when she said the famous line.

But Charles is a far better actor. The way he reacts to the painting is far better than Cary's presentational approach.

@goldenoldiesPete

Meredith Riggs I agree, and think it is better than "An Affair to Remember", which was also terrific. I believe the chemistry between Dunne and Boyer, is stronger than between Kerr and Grant. Btw, I just saw "Love Affair" (much of the film on tv) and also watched this clip more than once, and I still don't see how Boyer realizes her inability to walk in this final scene, as there appears to be no wheelchair, or other apparatus which would "reveal" her condition (although the film emphasizes him looking at a painting of her, as if that is a telltale clue) Could you explain to me how Boyer figures it out?
@MissCodswallop
@MissCodswallop 9 лет назад
goldenoldiesPete He puts two and two together when he sees the painting in her room because he was told by the man who sold the painting that he sold it to a lady who was poor and he hesitates when he's about to say that she also couldn't walk. I think he then realizes it, especially since there were subtle signs, like how she didn't get up from the couch when he first came in. He wanted to sit beside her but she didn't move, since she was obviously paralyzed. :)

Love Affair is currently my favorite movie. The chemistry between Charles Boyer and Irene Dunne was undeniable. "If something had to happen to either of us why to you?" Oh dear. We don't need a miracle. If you can paint I can walk." This dialogue is wonderful.

I was always a big fan of the Grant/Kerr version, but once I watched this version, I lost my nostalgic love for the remake. This version, the acting, everything comes off so much better in this version. Not surprised it was a '39 film. It is hard for me to admit that I prefer Boyer's performance to Grant's because Grant is one of my fave all time actors. I've never really been a fan of Kerr, though. But had liked her in AATR. 1939 was a great year for great movies.

maj1216 agreed!!!! I fell in love with the Cary Grant / Kerr version as a kid. I LOVE Cary Grant. But when I saw this one, just wow. It is incredible. Irene Dunne is one of my absolute favorites. Her voice was superb. Now I can’t even watch the Grant/Kerr version. They come off as clumsy and awkward. Trivia: same director for both movies, 19 years apart. And of course Irene Dunne and Cary Grant starred together in so many early movies. They were great together.

I think he was really splendid and his realisation scene spoke much more than Boyer's did. Cary achieved more emotional impact in a fraction of the time that Boyer was given. It was like the director of Love Affair was telling Boyer to let the evolution of his emotions show in a montage, Cary was

I love Grant, but I prefer this version by far... apart from the fact that Irene Dunne is always wonderful, the script for AATR was such an exact copy that you have moments that make no sense, such as Kerr singing. Dunne was a fine singer, but Kerr had to be dubbed! Why not just change the character?! Having said that, AATR is still my third favourite 'meeting at the top of the Empire State Building' movie! And I think I agree that Grant's "realisation scene" is marginally more effective.
