Phyllis Baker was just 16 when the Germans occupied her small island home. This is her story of love and war. Shortlisted in the 2018 Imperial War Museum Short Film Festival. Thanks to the family of Corporal Eugen Biedenbach for use of his wartime film footage, shot while on active service with the Wehrmacht. Thanks to Roger Jones of Seaflower Books, publisher of Island Destiny: A True Story of Love and War in the Channel Island of Sark, by Richard Le Tissier (2006).
British archive newsreel and stills courtesy of the Imperial War Museum. German archive newsreel courtesy of the German Federal Archives.

We used to go to Sark on holiday every year for a couple of weeks from when I was born until I was 10 or 11. We always used to stop by nearly everyday to say hello and have a chat. I used to love going to the Jewellers and having a look at all the watches. They were a lovely couple. Funnily enough although I noticed Werner had an accent I was too young to know where it was from and it wasn’t until a lot later in life that I found out he was a German Officer and they had met during the occupation. Fascinating story. They’ll be sadly missed. It was also sad to see how. I have the island had changed since my childhood. Didn’t seem right going down the avenue and not seeing Rang Jewellers along the way.

It's always beautiful to hear about positive things that happened during and after the war. War must never happen, no common man wants it and war should never divide us all, love is the way. Thanks for sharing their story

A great film about a lovely couple, who are greatly missed. Unfortunately, as Phyllis warned, the newcomers and bureaucrats from London succeeded in shafting the island and everything her and Werner stood and fought for by passing the 2008 constitutional reform, the consequences of which have been rather grim.

Using surrendered prisoners of war in mine clearing is against the Geneva Convention. Probably the British gave them a different designation, as Eisenhaeur did.

It's silly to have rules of war.... its war not saying people shouldnt have humanity but if u can have the restraint to follow rules of war you have the restraint to find a way around going to war in the first place.
