Yes - the movie "Love & Friendship" from 2016 is indeed an adaptation of Lady Susan. I had to double check before I started watching!😅 As with most Jane Austen adaptations, it has its charms as well as its flaws, and we'll explore some of them in this video. I hope you'll enjoy it!

I enjoyed listening to your thoughts on Love & Friendship. It's a favorite of mine and I liked the changes- there are always changes when it comes to adapting Austen. Or any author. I do agree with you 100% on two things though - the title. I can't understand why they didn't keep it "Lady Susan" after the novella. Just an odd thing to do. The second was not using Stephen Fry more. I wanted more scenes with him; he's too great of an actor to not fully utilize his talent. Thanks for another review.

I'm glad you enjoyed it! And you are correct, there are always some changes when it comes to adapting books to film. In my opinion, Stephen Fry should have played Mr Vernon instead. Not that the other actor was bad but then he would have had a lot more scenes. But who knows, maybe he got a small role because of scheduling difficulties. 🤷‍♀️ Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for doing this-I owned Lady Susan but found it difficult to follow the epistolary style. Then I saw Love and Friendship in a theater with my mom, who has since passed, and we both loved it, so it’s become special to me. I’m also a great fan of Kate Beckinsale. Her “Emma” is my favorite version, and she’s also delightful in “Cold Comfort Farm.” I was at first confused by the pronunciation of Mainwaring, but when we visited England we found that ‘w’ is often skipped over: Norwich is pronounced Norich, for example, so it seems consistent. Having seen the movie, I was able to go back a read the book and follow it just fine. Thanks for all these videos. Love them!

That sounds like a special memory for sure! I have learned about the Mainwaring pronunciation now, too, and I wish I knew it as I made these videos. Would perhaps have been a little less annoying for people as I keep mispronouncing it! I also completely understand not enjoying the epistolary format. I'm not really a fan of that either, to be honest. Can definitely do without it!

I loved both the book and the movie. I agree that the movie is more spicy. It's way more explicit than Jane would ever be. However, I think a modern Jane Austen would appreciate it. So funny.

I think so too! The movie is also quite reminiscent of a stage play, which would be the perfect medium for her to enjoy it in as well.
