LOVE & HATE: BLACK AMERICAN In Cambodia

We discover a topic we do not often talk about. Racism. It is 2024 while filming this video in Koh Rong, Cambodia and still racism or better said colorism is around us. This should change over the year and I hope this video will help us to build a better future.
Why did I use the word black in the title and thumbnail? It should be directly recognizable what the topic of this video is. I do think that if the word black is offensive to a lot of people we should start using the word melanated instead.

Cambodians are not honest. They are ready to be honest about saying the bad things about others but refuse to admit they were descendants of peasants or of the Khmer Rouge. A lot of Khmers in America to my recent discovery are descendants of Khmer Rouge and will play victim or make up excuses saying everyone is a victim.

Cambodians are not honest. They are only honest to put down someone, but when it comes to themselves, they will try to bury the truth. For example, many Khmers in America are descendants of peasants who joined the Khmer Rouge and either their parents hid this secret from them or they try to hide it and play victim when they are not descendants of the royals, nobles and merchants who were murdered during the Khmer Rouge.

I think racism is everywhere but you have to understand the context in the case of Cambodia. He raised the instance in a bar in SR, I would argue that it is more of bias eg. perception of financial status rather than negative emotion forward different colors. In my village we called almost every darker skinned kids “blxxkie” but we didn’t mean it in a negative racial way, just that we called them the way we saw them visually, with no ill intention. You won’t be surprised to see people giggling or questioning why some people skin is so dark and stuff and that probably interpreted as in your face but no hatred involved.

Cambodian is more direct but not necessary racist. You have to prove yourself with respect of their culture. Once they know who you are and trust worthy then you become their friend.

Black people are bad white people are good is not a true perception from Cambodian. Cambodian, especially women, most of them prefer to have light skin. They usually call people who has dark skin Black regardless of their race or ethnicity including Cambodian and that doesn’t represent racism in their culture and society. It’s true that in Cambodia, a man with lighter skin has much better chance to get a girlfriend than someone with darker skin unless a darker skin guy has something much more special in him than the lighter skin one. And this is the reality in Cambodia forever. I am a Cambodian with darker skin in the family and most of them called me Black including friends and neighbors. However, I feel and received the same love and respect from them as much as my family members with light skin. This is our culture , it’s not Racism. You will learn that if you stay in Cambodia long enough.

And being raised in America, weren’t you creeped out when adult strangers (who were mostly white, black and Latino claiming they are Christians) approached you preaching love and forgiveness? If yes and yes, then why would you preach love? Shouldn’t you be praising truth over love instead in order to live in a just society? Suddenly, stoicism makes so much sense to me. And of course we are all humans, but weren’t you taught stranger danger as a kid? Why doesn’t it still apply to you as an adult? ‘Cambodian respect and love all’ no we don’t, we are discriminatory toward Khmer-Islam ( Cham descendants, as dirty etc), Montagnards (Khmer Loeu, as uncivilised, uncultured. Vietnamese and Chinese Cambodian as suspicious etc. when many Khmer are also partially Chinese somewhere in their bloodline. Don’t sugar things that you don’t know. And guess what many KR units during the genocide periods especially those stationed in the eastern zones are made of personnel from the Khmer Loeu ethnic groups, they hated Central Khmer authority, because for centuries they never wished to assimilate into mainstream Khmer culture. And many of these units also committed atrocities against ethnic Khmer.

I am a Black man and I notice racism from some foreigners here in Southeast Asia. They are usually from Europe or Australia and of European origin. I do understand because I know that racism was exported around the world. Black skin is deemed inferior. But… I do notice that some people of European descent treat “locals” like servants or “less than”. And many “locals” have to accept the disrespectful treatment. It reminds me of the Antebellum South. Where “Masta” believed that it was his divine right to treat people with disrespect. And I am surprised because these are their countries (Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, etc). Their economic woes come from the fact that Western powers have dominated them for decades if not centuries and do not invest in their countries. Which leads to deep corruption. So they are economically challenged and struggle to survive. That way their resources can be stolen or purchased for below market value. But… they as the man stated they want to treat Blacks with disrespect sometimes. They don’t seem to realize the we are not dumb and are aware of the fact because we had to endure it in America. It’s obvious that we have the means to get here. Well, it’s their loss. Keep “grinnin & skinnin’ “ for Masta. See how it works out for you. I’m sure he will pat you on the back for your service and kind nature…

Cambodia was never a colony. It was initially a protectorate. And Cambodia was and still is nominally a kingdom. Comparing Cambodia to antebellum is a little of a stretch because Cambodians weren’t slaves. Majority of them were peasants. Peasants as in workers that contribute to a kingdom. Slaves were captured criminals or aggressive tribal people.
@user-fs9yv4hl5f
@user-fs9yv4hl5f Месяц назад
@@BeauBodhi88 I never stated it was a colony. True it was a thriving empire at one time. In fact, the Khmer Empire had over a million people when London had about 30,000. But, they still didn’t and don’t get the respect from Western powers presently. The bombs that were dropped here during the Vietnam War are still being carefully found and removed. Cambodia was never at war with America, so what was up with that ? The comparison with the Antebellum South is because who treats people like that if they really care about human beings ? Look at their quality of life today. Doesn’t look like they are actually thriving economically. I lived in Scottsdale Arizona for a while so I know what a good quality of life looks like. This has a long way to go before their quality is like that.

The idea that colorism is a European invention is in fact a myth. This maybe more true in recent decades with the prevalence of social media and globalization which no doubt is not only affecting the people of Cambodia but the entire world. But Cambodia is naturally a tropical country and we were in contact with both Chinese and Indians for centuries in which various ethnic groups from both nationalities also lived in Cambodia, so naturally the people will notice differences in skin color and various shades of skin color even within their own ethnic group. It’s like noticing height differences within family members. To my recent discovery, older generation (Gen X, Baby Boomers and prior) Cambodians love and praise a golden yellowish hue in which they compare to the inside of mung beans which they see as a representative of the yellow Sun and green Earth as One (the skin color of the fraternal twin human Sun God-King!). When I was younger growing up in NYC, I liked getting light in the winter with rosy cheeks and lips (like a pretty boyish youthful boy look not to be confused with being feminine or gay) and then sunbathe during the summertime to get a golden yellow-brown tan to look more exotic and tropical. Now that is the honest truth! And I naturally gravitate towards the middle tropical look! Not too dark and not too pale. Olive-skinned tone for lack of a better word or a more socially known word.

Anywho, this conversation made me wonder, “Is this the reason why Cambodians are one of the latest and newest immigrants in America? Because we are the new pawns aka test subjects to either validate or debunk racial theories and racial conflicts in the Western world?” Looking back in retrospect as a Khmer raised American since infancy like Superman, my childhood suddenly makes so much sense to me now considering why my American teachers deliberately indoctrinated the kids (including myself) what they taught us since elementary school-which is Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr. and showed us videos of the KKK and Nazis and even yelled at the kids (not me) when they refused to stand up, do the pledge of allegiance and sing the Star Spangled Banner which is obviously about freedom when we were only in elementary school who cannot be free since WE WERE KIDS and still need to be under the supervision, guidance, and tutelage of our parents as well as other adults!!! I was mostly raised in a predominantly Russian Jewish neighborhood in Brooklyn, NY up until the age of 15 by the way. I will be honest here as the only Truman in the world apparently. The first time I saw a film that had an entire cast that was completely of a different race was around the age from 3-6 (before I started kindergarten) and it was called The Wizard of Oz in which my eldest sister rented. I vividly remember watching it and feeling completely uncomfortable in a bad way thinking the time period looks primitive (the beginning of the movie was in black and white that’s why) so naturally to a kid at that age who was used to seeing color TV, I thought in the old days, specifically that decade, the world was literally in black and white and had no color (in real life that is), and the people in the movie behaved oddly “Oh oh Toto! Oh oh Toto!” (I never seen any Cambodians let alone real life humans behave in such a “flowery way”) and the race of the people in the film looked weird and unattractive. It was the same exact feeling I had when I first saw and heard East Asian, specifically Chinese and Japanese opera on TV and thought the people looked and sang in an eerie, spooky, and unattractive way. But fast forward to Kindergarten on the first day of school, I remember I fell asleep and woke up in class with my twin sister in which my father was nowhere to be found. I started crying. I remember the kids were diverse in which we had one white and one black female teacher. I’ve never seen a diversity of foreign races before, and the air, the setting, the people all felt foreign to me. I cried to my twin sister thinking my dad abandoned us with these strange foreigners! Hence why a kid at such an age cried. And the first time I heard “black music” was at age 11 in the Summer of ‘99 when my siblings and I finally decided to play dodgeball and tag with the Filipino and Puerto Rican neighbors. We initially played with only the very few Cambodian kids in our Brooklyn neighborhood-one Cambodian family being mixed Egyptian Muslim to my recent discovery-but we as kids just simply saw them as Cambodians. So while my 3 siblings and I were playing dodgeball with the Filipino and Puerto Rican kids our age, I remember the Puerto Rican High School teenagers were sitting on their steps playing R&B and Hip Hop songs, specifically Destiny’s Child: The Writings on the Wall album on their boombox, and when I heard Beyoncés voice for the first time, I thought she sounded aggressive, harsh and kind of manly to me (I remember I used to say Bianca when referring to Beyoncé because that was a name I was familiar with.) At that very moment when I first heard R&B in which the singer was Beyoncé, I looked at my twin sister and said in Cambodian, “They’re playing black people music!” We were raised listening to Khmer ‘60s and 70’s rock, American Grunge, Indie Rock, and ‘80s pop music that’s why such as The Smashing Pumpkins, The Cranberries, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson and Madonna. When I first heard rap music that same year, I thought it sounded so aggressive, sexual, and quite frankly morbid. I felt uncomfortable hearing them, the feeling was kind of dark almost like waking in a sketchy neighborhood. The first rap song I heard was “Back That Azz Up” and it was played on the radio in the Summer of ‘99. Oh and I do remember feeling uncomfortable and to be honest repulsed when my white first grade teacher made us tacos in class using her hands as well as when one of my black friends’ mother offered me a glass of orange juice when I’ve visited his apartment in the 3rd grade (He stole my Superboy Toy BTW and denied jt and we later got into an argument as to which one of us two is more like a real life Goku from the Japanese animation Dragon Ball.) I remember not wanting to eat or drink from either of them, since both were foreign to me and they both used their hands! Oh and I do remember being scared to try Turkish food thinking it was Pakistani food at age 14 or 15, and being scared to try Puerto Rican food at age 15 as the new kid in an almost all white school when my family bought a house in suburbia NY. The End.

Chinese entrepreneurs have a tribal mentality like all human groups now. It doesn’t necessarily have to do with racism. They just feel comfortable hiring their own kind just like whites, blacks, latinos etc. When going to Cambodia and opening a business, they will choose others like them. That is why I’m against capitalist republics. True kingdoms are feudal with the law enforcements as the ones in power. Not salespeople wtf.

As a Cambodian fraternal twin, I have to say that those who preach that others see them as lesser makes them even more less desirable. Hence why I didn’t have interest in watching the Prince of Egypt when I found out it was about Jewish people when I was always obsessed with Egyptian pharaonic culture. Playing victim when you’re not a victim only to be the new hierarchy just makes a person or group of people less interesting. I’ve always thought this way since elementary school. That’s why I like Ancient Egypt, Greece and Cambodia because I don’t see them as those who claim they were slaves to spark empathy from the world only to be hypocritically the new hierarchy.

As a Cambodian fraternal twin, I voted for Obama when I was naive, nominally a Democrat, and just part of the herded sheep. Now as the awakened fraternal twin Billly goat, I know better. 😇 A garden is a cultivated, man-made, and divided flora (which is why it invokes idea of serenity) in contrast to the untamed wilderness, making a garden a good metaphor for the first civilization on Earth which was a kingdom that was segregated, fortified, moated, and guarded. A Kingdom sure isn’t inclusive. That is why anti-monarchy democrats created an imaginary inclusive Kingdom of Heaven that can only exist in their cloudy, foggy mind. Anyone who is ready to point their finger and accuse a person or a group of people of racism with the mentality of breaking barriers are most likely descendants of invasive, superstitious, wind-worshipping tribal animist pagans desiring inclusion into a secluded Kingdom. And anyone who preaches equality are most likely descendants of lesser castes covetously desiring power by preaching equality only to hypocritically be the new hierarchy. Mixing plants, animals, and humans lead to confusion, not enlightenment, which is why inclusion and equality are both inherently evil.

Western countries are facing destruction due to such discussions and topics of conversation. Show respect towards one another without expecting any special privileges. Regardless of who you are, try to become the best version of yourself (human being) and contribute to the world's greater good. Be kind, and keep on giving without expecting back. Foreigners can avoid bringing controversies or their ideology into the Orient countries. Light skin, dark skin-everyone has the right to their preference.

For that information about Racism, Cambodia has a black community; why are you still thinking Cambodia is racist? I believe everything you said is all in your mind. There is no such thing as racism or colorism in Cambodia because some Cambodian people have dark skin as well. Because of the language barriers, you need to go easy on the local people, and they tend to shy away. If you have an open heart, get to know them before judging.

Mais ça ne veut pas dire qu’ils ne t’aiment pas. Au Cambodge y’a deux communautés l’un est khmer normal bronzé et l’autre est khmer-chinois donc les blancs. "Melanated" is probably one of the most stupid words I have heard. I discovered your channel a few months ago and have really like the vibe so far, but this video is really weird. Being a black man and complaining about racism in Asia... Well, I went backpacking in Africa ten yeas ago, and, as a white man (non-melanated?), I sometimes had to endure racist behaviours. So what? I otally understood that people from other origins didn't want to see me or interract with me, especially in their home country. Anyway, just my opinion... By the way, I went to Cambodia in 1998 and really loved it. Great memories.

I've been living in southeast asia as a black man from America for a few years and having such a different lens from appearing outwardly so differently while traveling. Has admittedly created internal frustrations that Jamin beautifully summarized. While darker skin might reflect poverty due to it being attributed to Africa, or even working in the rice fields in some minds here. Or the skin bleaching and extra attention to white tourist while Thai and vietnamese locals in the cities adopt their "modern culture is obvious. Sadly after centuries of slavery and war there are too few educated, secure black men that can and are traveling the world to give others the experience that pigment is just pigment. Aswell as in the states we have a herd mentality in our culture and only traveling black men who are a minority will see this, reflect with it, and acknowledge eachother in the comment section. Be a good human being in a world of unaware privileged/suffering human beings. You can't change anyone in a world that only respects the dollar. Although if you're going to try, learning to articulate yourself is the best place to start. Sorry for the weird vomit, but I want to acknowledge the topic at hand.

As a first generation Cambodian fraternal twin raised American since infancy like Superman, my question to you is why do you desire acceptance or validation from the entire world? Do you desire a larger selection in terms of dating pool? If yes, then don’t you think that is your own insecurity issues you need to work on? And this includes whites, Latinos as well as East Asians who are in the media now. Ever since I was age 8 in the 3rd grade, I felt an instant affinity towards other ancient kingdom civilizations, specifically Egypt and Greece because I can relate to their moral ethnics and philosophy which are beautifully relayed in their Chosen One fraternal twin mythology-which was surprisingly uncanny to Cambodians. As I’ve gotten older, all ethnicities and races from whites, to blacks, to Latinos, to Middle Eastern Muslims, and to even East, South and South East Asians (specifically Thai, Vietnamese and Filipinos) all try to make me like their people, history, culture, language, and music. It’s traumatizing on my part. I’m sorry but I’ve my own preferences and it isn’t the result of racism. It’s because I feel more comfortable with someone like-minded and desire someone with a shared interest, shared upbringing and experience, as well someone who fits my internalized perception of aesthetics (as vain as that sound) that I’ve unconditionally loved ever since I was a kid as the standard of beauty prior to media and peer manipulation as a result of globalization.

In the ‘90s and prior, I remember Asians were naturally into other Asians. They weren’t into white, black or Latinos who weren’t even on our mind, let alone seen as potential partners. We didn’t have a history with them and didn’t know them well enough to love or hate them. They were seen as strictly platonic even when we were playing recess together as kids. It is normal for tigers to mate with other tigers, not with lions and panthers. It is only when a tiger is kept in a controlled setting is when it mates with a lion producing ligers and tigons-which is a product of human meddling.

Avowedly, race-baiting will definitely get you thumbs up and the algorithm will boost your video. However, this Black American claim is baseless and solely based on his feelings and not reality, insofar as scrutinizing California's racial policies since the 80s will indicate tremendous inclusion, financial opportunities, and social ascendancy. To your audience, in America Black culture rules, furthermore, go to any mall and you shall see a blue-gum black "youthz" dating a blue-eyed American Blode. STOP THE CAP!!!!

As a Cambodian fraternal twin first generation American raised in a predominantly Russian Jewish community in NYC since infancy like Superman, I agree. These racial issues are foreign to me considering Cambodians do not have a history with black people or even have a history with an influx of white people. It’s totally normal for Cambodians to like their own kind and race, but unfortunately there is truth to the majority of sheep being easily programmed by the media to like based on what they see. All I have to say for any race or ethnic group is to learn to accept rejection. Don’t try to be the most desired for it makes you desperate looking and quite frankly invasive.
